Review The Song (24)Print the Lyrics
It's the perfect time of year
Somewhere far away from here
I feel fine enough, I guess
Considering everything's a mess.
There's a restaurant down the street
Where hungry people like to eat
I could walk, but I'll just drive
It's colder than it looks outside.

It's like a dream - you try to remember but it's gone, then ya
Try to scream but it only comes out as a yawn, when ya
Try to see the world beyond your front door.
Take your time the way I rhyme's gonna make you smile, when ya
Realize that a guy my size might take a while, just to
Try to figure out what all this is for.

It's the perfect time of day
To throw all your cares away
Put the sprinkler on the lawn
And run through with my gym shorts on.
Take a drink right from the hose
And change into some drier clothes
Climb the stairs up to my room
Sleep away the afternoon.

Pinch Me
Pinch Me
Cos I'm still asleep.
Please God
Tell Me
That I'm still asleep

On an evening such as this (yo)
It's hard to tell if I exist
Pack the car and leave this town
who'll notice that I'm not around?
I could hide out under there
I just made you say 'underwear'
I could leave but I'll just stay
All my stuff's here anyway.

It's like a dream - you try to remember but it's gone, then ya
Try to scream but it only comes out as a yawn, when ya
Try to see the world beyond your front door.
Take your time cos the way I rhyme's gonna make you smile, when ya
Realize that a guy my size might take a while, just to
Try to figure out what all this is for.
Try to figure out what all this is for.
Try to see the world beyond your front door.
Try to figure out what all this is for.

great song | Reviewer: Phex | 10/8/09

i just heard this song from a friend and had to look up the lyrics and listen to it again. its amazing, and totally makes me look at life in a whole different perspective. Its great. All in all: Fantastic Song

Barenaked Despair | Reviewer: Anonymous | 7/16/09

Everyone seems to be implying this is a light-hearted song about happy memories... it is nothing of the sort. It is a song about despair... depression... meaninglessness.

If you disagree that's fine, but listen to the song again, and (as I did) read the sleevenotes to BNL: All Their Greatest Hits. It's all there.

Sorry to dampen the mood, but I think this is a thousand miles away from your opinions. It's a beautiful, tragic song about modern existential futility. In my view. =) It also helped me a great deal when I was in high school and didn't realise these kinds of feelings affected other people, too.

P.S. The Ladies ARE a funny light-hearted band, which is admirable. They can fuse dark topics with upbeat music, a bit like EELS.

Great Song | Reviewer: Glitch | 6/21/09

I have loved the Barenaked Ladies since I was seven years old, and I recently got back into listening to them.

What people need to realize is that "childish and immature" is their style. For those who say that: Have you ever listened to their music?! These guys have fun with their songs. So what? It's still a LOT better than most things out there today.

dumb | Reviewer: me | 3/16/09

sorry to say this but some parts of this song is just dumb. Underwhere? it might make u think of ur childhood but to me (still in childhood) its really... crappy. "theres a restauraunt...people like to eat" probably a 5 year old wrote this

wow...the internet has turned into my grandparents house: nothing but one BIG FREAKIN' argument! It doesn't matter where you go, a barenaked ladies lyrics page, a webcomic, even a documentary video, there's one person voicing an opinion, and another person making a personal attack on the first reviewer and completely forgetting about the original statement. From now on can we keep to the actual material instead of these stupid personal attacks? please???

oh, and as for the song, the way he mixes the strong feeling of being completely trapped with the nostalgia of a life without consequenses is very intriguing and i like it.

wow you guys! you are supposed to be reviewing the song, not each others maturity level! btw I enjoy the song because it is funny and doesn't have some deep meaning you sit around discussing. it's fun to listen to. enjoy it don't freak out if it's immature. if it's too childish, don't listen to it! everyone needs a little immaturity every once in a while! live a little!

well, citing the kind of songs they make, I think the "immaturity" aspect makes BARENAKED LADIES different from the usual songs that other bands play out there.

This song alone is a standout song that puts out the childish memories that we had as kids before and realize how happy it was as all of us. As adults are now crowded with the real world problems, the song puts us into realization that wishingful thinking of childish happiness and bliss are only dreams that we need somebody to "pinch" us to realize that all of that kind of thinking is not real as we are all bounded by the sad realities of adult life.

Wow | Reviewer: Anonymous | 10/12/08

That Anonymous guy cracked me up... he is scolding someone for being "immature and childish" on a barenaked ladies comment section. First of all he wasn't even being immature he was just recalling childhood nostalgia. Second, many of their songs are about childish immature humor so is their band name.

Stupid Girls | Reviewer: CMon | 8/3/08

Hi there this message is for that anonymous retard that seems to think its ok to write rude and immature comments about what everyone else is blogging. this message is for you. I can see why you want to remain anonymous. second, please, please, please, leave this site alone. noone wants to hear your bitching and your worthlessness. to tell someone that you know how they are feeling or the maturity level of another human first look at urself. good job trying to put others down what are you eight? stupid loser go cry at home in your bed by YOURSELF and leave smiles and jeremy alone. plzthx!

<3 | Reviewer: Anonymous | 7/29/08

Hi, Smiles, please stop being an immature little child. This is a great song, and you're ruining it. Please come back when you're more mature, plzkthx.

And now for you, Jeremy person. You can't say that it doesn't mean as much to anyone else. That's stupid. News flash: You're not the only one whose father died or left them. Other people have problems too. Sorry if that sounds harsh, but you can't just assume that you're the only person with problems, it just makes you seem naive.

Anyway. This is a great song. I love it. BNL rocks, I hope Steve works all this drama out and that they will continue doing S&D!
