Pieces of April Lyrics - Three Dog Night

Review The Song (30)

(D. Loggins)
from the album The Best of Three Dog Night

April gave us springtime and the promise of the flowers
And the feeling that we both shared and the love that we called ours
We knew no time for sadness, that's a road we each had crossed
We were living a time meant for us, and even when it would rain
we would laugh it off.

I've got pieces of April, I keep them in a memory bouquet
I've got pieces of April, it's a morning in May

We stood on the crest of summer, beneath an oak that blossomed green
Feeling as I did in April, not really knowing what it means
But it must be then that you stand beside me now to make me feel this way
Just as I did in April, but it's a morning in May.

I've got pieces of April, I keep them in a memory bouquet
I've got pieces of April, but it's a morning in May

I've got pieces of April, I keep them in a memory bouquet

Transcends Generations | Reviewer: Danny | 5/7/13

I would love to know the composer's story behind this song. It is packed with such descriptive emotion that it takes many of us of that generation back and has the power to transport us back in time in nostalgic somberness and delightful hope. Thanks 3DN for recording this awesome song!

My forever Bouguet | Reviewer: Maggie De | 4/23/13

This beautiful song came out at a very life changing time for me. My Dad passed away in April, and every time I hear this song, I know it is his song. The morning in May, reminds me of when Dan Blocker, my childhood idol, passed away- Daddy and I would always watch Bonanza together, and my April and May now ride the sunsets together- until I get to go Home and join them.. my all time forever favorite song- Thank you Kenny ,and Three dog Night- for a piece of Heaven...

a soft sweet memory of april and may, and until june 1985 | Reviewer: mg | 4/23/13

a soft song, later a memory, as i'd initially heard it as a child of the 70s, never then paying it much mind. just another awesome song, taken for granted. now as I reflect, it reminds me of the first love, who I knew these months. june came, and she went abroad, to end up marrying who she went away to meet. I seem to retain memories of those precious few months of 85..

We stood on the crest of summer | Reviewer: Danny | 3/8/13

Reminds me of my first love, whom I married and being so young, didn't know how to really love and appreciated her for who she was. She divorced me after 3 years (and who could blame her). I was the one who lost. "We stood on the crest of summer, beneath and oak that blossomed green" takes me back to that time and to "a love that we called ours". Thank you J for being such a great woman. May your happiness ever blossom as the "springtime". God bless you always.

You just posted this from Youtube on Face book, you mentioned you didn't understand the lyrics, and suggested "LSD, LOL"
Knowing you, realized you were kidding, but would like to reveal what I believe the special meaning there is for you in this song!

April gave us springtime and the promise of the flowers
Your April is Dominic, he was your springtime and the promise of beautiful son forever.

And the feeling that we both shared and the love that we called ours
The bond between the two of you was unbreakable, a mother and son bond.

We knew no time for sadness, that's a road we each had crossed
Yes even the two of you endured sadness, but it was fleeting.

We were living a time meant for us, and even when it would rain
we would laugh it off.
This verse speaks for itself.

I've got pieces of April, I keep them in a memory bouquet
Now you have pieces (memories, pictures, his room) of Dominic, you will always keep them in your memory bouquet.

I've got pieces of April, it's a morning in May
Now it is a morning in May, the time after Dominic, time after the loss, time goes on, so does he in your memory bouquet.

We stood on the crest of summer, beneath an oak that blossomed green
The two of you stood by the coming promise of his adult hood, his "summer", the tree of life with so much promise.

Feeling as I did in April, not really knowing what it means
Not knowing the tragedy thst would come, your feelings are still in April. No one will ever know what it means, or explain the reasons, or the whys away. Keep your pieces of April

But it must be then that you stand beside me now to make me feel this way
Dominic will always be there beside you, he will always be there to encourage you, to pick you up when you feel down.

Just as I did in April, but it's a morning in May.
Just as you did in his life, but now it is a morning in your life.

You have pieces of April, you keep them in a memory bouquet
You have pieces of Dominic, and yes it's a morning in May

Caroline | Reviewer: Lynn O'Neal | 4/9/11

Being a child of the 70's this has always been my favorite song. I never knew until years later just how special it would become. My husband and I lost our first child, a baby girl. She was born 3 months early on April 10 1985 and she died on April 26, 1985. She was due on July 26th. The words are so appropriate. "April gave us spring time and the promise of the flowers." Every time I hear this song, I think of Caroline. "I've got pieces of April, I keep them in a memory bouquet."

Always April | Reviewer: Mare | 1/26/11

Burning a candle today for my best friend from high school, Rick. This song was our class song, and every time I heard it through the years, I smiled, remembering him. Thanks, Rick, for the fun and laughter, for throwing my books out the window in Latin class, trimming Mom's hedge with your Plymouth Duster, showing up for prom in your tennis shoes. Thanks for being the best friend a girl ever had.

on a morning in may | Reviewer: daisy | 4/30/10

Grieving now the loss of what will most likely be the last love I will know; I thought of this song from my own early childhood. My much older brother was a big fan of Three Dog Night and I always loved this song. The last time I saw my love was in early April when he visited for my birthday. Now I know I will never see him again. So truly, "I've got pieces of April.... but it's a morning in May." I will treasure my memory bouquet ......

My May 1st Tradition | Reviewer: David D | 5/1/10

Every single year on every 1st of May I play this beautiful song that's so very dear to me. So many precious memories as I fondly remember my sweet childhood when this song came out. My all-time favorite song from one of my all-time favorite groups, Three Dog Night (Chuck, Danny and Cory) and thank you Dave Loggins for writing such a gorgeous masterpiece!

lost love passing | Reviewer: anonymous | 4/30/10

Yep, I met my lost love a few weeks ago in early April of this year. My lost love will always stay lost in April. Just the way I like it, now. But Spring hopes eternal................and May is looking better than ever............the pieces of the puzzle fit, finally. Goodbye April.
Hey, did that fellow ever find DB Cooper?

"Pieces" Still Remain In My Heart and My Memory | Reviewer: Juli Gray Drosendahl | 2/27/10

Dave, I will always remember your writing "Pieces" while I was visiting you in Nashville that weekend in April. I can still envision it as if it had just past. Ours was the kind of love that only comes but once in (many(?)) lifetimes. My life turned out empty in many ways, yet with amazing sections of my heart overflowing with that sweet but oh so short-lived time spent with the love-of-my-life, getting to know, (and love), myself and finding beauty and much happiness in life in spite of losses that have incurred. My prayer is that you are happy and fulfilled. Hugs from Florida
PS I though you left me...crazy times.

It's the most beautiful song and yet a very sad one (at least for me). Still, i just love it.
Breaking up with a love in March the song carries
on the memory of happier times. I, too, cry every
time I hear it. I will always love the song and
her.

So much feeling that I .... | Reviewer: Tony | 2/14/10

On my 53rd birthday, I was shoveling snow, longing for Spring, and thought how April would take all the snow away. This song came to mind and I was humming it as I shoveled. I came inside, looked it up on the internet, played it and started crying. And I'm the rugged type pf guy.
I realized that I still remembered the words, and what this song meant to me so long ago. " The promise of the flowers and a feeling that we both shared and a love that we called ours". So much promise. And now,I still have so much to look forward to, even if less zealously.
What beatiful words, what mastery it took to write those feelings; it simply astounds me. Dave Loggins, master tunesmith, thank you.

This Special Day | Reviewer: Mel | 7/7/09

Here I sit, just finished watching the memorial services for Michael Jackson, and I started to reminisce all the great songs from my past. Pieces of April surfaces to the top. It is a song that holds a special meaning to me. Glad to have known it.

Aloha.

so true | Reviewer: Bob | 6/10/09

I've got pieces of April, I keep'em in a memory bouquet...I've got pieces of April, but it's a morning in May..
I don't think there's ever been any lyrics with more feeling, emotion, and heartbreak than that..
