BORN: January 31, 1951, Chiswick, London, England Phil Collins was born January 31st, 1951 in Chiswick, England. He got his first drum, one of those noisy tin ones, at the age of 5. His first proper kit came when he was 12, and whether in front of the mirror or the TV he would be drumming along to any music he could. A natural performer Collins attended stage school, and was soon playing in London's West End as the Artful Dodger in the musical Oliver. The cheeky Cockney image from Dickens camenaturally and would stand him in good stead during his future successes. He soon formed a band called The Real Thing and played his first gigs. Many people have been citing how it's about witnessing a drowning as a child. This may well have come from the line "Well if you told me you were drowning, I would not lend a hand." In my personal opinion, this is probably no more than an offset, a graphic depiction of his resentment towards this person, he would rather see him die than try to save him, such is his dislike. As for what I think it is, it could well be about an affair. At first I thought it could've been the narrator confronting his wife about what he saw. The line "Well I was there and I saw what you did, I saw it with my own two eyes" suggests that the narrator had seen the couple engaged in relations rather than just hearing it from another person. The constant refrain "I can feel it coming in the air tonight" suggests that he might've had revenge on his mind, or far worse. When I looked closer though, I thought that he might've been confronting the other man. Consider lines like "It's the first time, the last time we ever met". This suggests that they hadn't met before, that the other guy was a total stranger and the last part of that line suggests that he may indeed have murder on his mind. Another line that strikes me is "I've seen your face before my friend, but I don't know if you know who I am", that the other guy doesn't know that the narrator is the womans husband/boyfriend, that he knows of the other mans infidelities. So it may well be a million miles away from what other people had guessed it to be about.
