Review The Song (27)Print the Lyrics
Don't fret precious I'm here,
step away from the window
and go back to sleep

Lay your head down child
I won't let the boogeymen come
Count their bodies like sheep
To the rhythm of the war drums
Pay no mind to the rebel
Pay no mind to the rabble
Head down, go to sleep
To the rhythm of the war drums

Pay no mind what other voices say
They don't care about you, like I do, (like I do)
Safe from pain, and truth, and choice, and other poison devils,
See, they don't give a fuck about you, like I do.

Just stay with me,
safe and ignorant, go,
back to sleep, go
back to sleep

Lay your head down child
I won't let the boogeymen come
Count their bodies like sheep
To the rhythm of the war drums
Pay no mind to the rebel
Pay no mind to the rabble
Head down, go to sleep
To the rhythm of the war drums

I'll be the one to protect you from
Your enemies and all your demons
I'll be the one to protect you from
A will to survive and a voice of reason
I'll be the one to protect you from
Your enemies and your choices son
They're one and the same
I must isolate you
Isolate and save you from yourself

Swayin' to the rhythm of the new world order and
Counting bodies like sheep to the rhythm of the war drums
The boogeymen are coming
The boogeymen are coming
Keep your head down, go to sleep
To the rhythm of the war drums

Stay with me
Safe and ignorant
Just stay with me
I'll hold you and protect you from the other ones,
The evil ones, don't love you son,
Go back to sleep.

It's Simple | Reviewer: Free the Mind | 6/24/2008
It's simple when you think about it. It's not just specificly the Government or anything, but more about the lack of free thought that may Americans hold today. We blindly follow who we think will keep us safe. We become their "pets" and let them pull us away from the "window" and see what we could be. Yes I could see how the Government would fit perfectly into this, but it's not just them but everyone in general. When we listen to someone and not think for ourseves then we become a victim without even realizing it, a perfect tool for anothers use.

The Waterboy Theory | Reviewer: Jake | 6/19/2008

To anyone too blind to see the blatant message of government suppression on the American Society, let's compare it to The Waterboy.

In the movie, Bobby's momma tries her best to shelter him and keep him "ignant" of the outside world. Any idea she disagrees with gets associated with the Devil, as to scare Bobby into forgetting about them and continuing his simplistic and ignorant meanderings. Thus, keeping his we-tod-ed ass within her manipulative bounds.

Much to the same effect, I can see how this song correlates with the government control of our society, via political tools such as the media and propaganda, where they prey on the gullible puppets that make up our public masses. Carefully playing on our emotions and patriotism, they can easily manipulate the majority of folk into making the "right" decisions. Democracy? No.. Hypocrisy? Absolutely..

Gaze out of the window and into the world, pausing every now and then to find color within the gray.

the protection if innocence through ignorance | Reviewer: some random | 6/18/2008

you all make valid points, exept for maybe camp kill genna, and i dont know if this point has already been made... but its also about how we underestimate our children's abilty to understand and cope with things. if you have ever watched a sex ed film and not really learnt anything, then you know what i'm trying to say. we spend spend so long keeping the kids in the dark for "their own good", that when it comes to the real world, they're not prepared. think of the line "safe and ignorant".
    cheers.

is clearly about the government control | Reviewer: Anonymous | 5/27/2008

i think this song is clearly about governemnt control yuo dont hav to be a genious to realize it is not about drugs, neither hidden cultures, or sleeping childs....-_- or any of those things is clearly about how the governmet controls and manipulates you they keep you entertainned and thinking about stupid things so that you dont realize what is really happening out there how the iraq war is just another line in the long list of criminal things the USA government does how they manipulate and use the people for their criminal acts and how real criminals like bush do because of power.. power corrupts and anyone can be corrupted by power because the only fear with power is losing it.. the message on this song is great and could not be clearer, to them were not more than sheep following the others to our own destruction or the destruction of others and they want us all asleep in a way of saying it so that we dont see whats really happening out there thats waht the songs says "Safe from pain, and truth, and choice, and other poison devils" or "Your enemies and your choices son
They're one and the same" beacuse we been homoginzed forgetting we are individuals with different point of views and not more numbers on the vote cards so plz AWAKE AND LOOK THROUGH THE WINDOW

Song for the society | Reviewer: Jeppe Frausing | 5/21/2008

This song is a masterpiece. Everyone who listens to this song, should know, that there is a lesson to be learned. The lyrics does not tell us about James Maynard Keenan's problem with slepping. It is a song about the western world. In the lyrics he says "Count their bodies like sheep
To the rhythm of the war drums." This line doesn't tell us it is a good idea to count sheep, if you want to sleep. We all know that in many cartoons it would be very normal if a character is counting sheep, jumping across a fence. We all know that this means the certain character is trying to fall asleep. When Maynard sings this line, he wants to tell us that in the western society a sheep and human life has the same value. "Count their bodies like sheep To the rhythm of the war drums."

If you thought the song was about falling asleep, you were right, if you thought it was about a single persons sleep, you were wrong. In the song it is a whole world that sleeps. In this song the act of sleeping is equal to ignoring all the problems of the world, I see this in thi line "Safe from pain, and truth, and choice, and other poison devils"

    I love this song | Reviewer: campkillgemma | 4/26/2008

Too me this song is about Maynard speaking to his son about the nightmares he his and don't be speak of them as they are only dreams and trying to protect him.

This is a song I also symbolise with my boyfriend saying to me as I have nightmares nearly every night and if I have a disturbed sleep like night terrors or mumbling and thrashing about the bed he hugs into me and tells me its alright and even though im sleeping it calms me down - it kind of has a sentimental value to me. =]

    Great song | Reviewer: Joel | 2/29/2008

In my opinion this song can mean whatever u want it to mean. Maynard is talking about something that might give you a false comfort, be it drugs, government, and/or religion. Each of those things might keep you away from the reality of things. What he was talking about in specific would have to be answered by him only... which in my opinion is not really important.

In the start of the song the persuader is saying to "step away from the window." A window has always symbolized information. Whatever the persuasion is is trying to keep "the truth" hidden and therefore away from the window.

Voice of the culture | Reviewer: Dan | 2/18/2008

There is no doubt in my mind that in these lyrics maynard is taking the position as the voice of our culture/society.

Drugs and parents? well they are a part of our culture so in that respect your right but please your totally off base. Listen to it again with that i first said and you will totaly connect with the song

    its what i believe | Reviewer: balls | 2/13/2008

listen to the song. its clearly about somebody keeping there child secluded from the outside world.

"Don't fret precious im here, step away from the window, and go back to sleep"
That, to me, means a child is seeing something the parent doesn't want them to. Watching the news and seeing something that might make him have a different opinion than the parent.

That is what I believe the song is about. I don't agree with it because it takes a jab at my, who I think is wonderful, President George W. Bush. But, this is music, not politics so I still like APC.

    Lullaby... | Reviewer: Anonymous | 1/21/2008

ok, im not sure why, but his song puts me sleep. But metallica does the same, yes i no im wierd. And although i've read what other people have to say, the song reminds me of parenting or of a sadistic realationship of some sort..idk that's wat it seems like to me...
