Penelope Lyrics - Saosin

Review The Song (19)

(originally by Pinback
performed by Chris and Cove)

Oh Penelope
Are you filled with air
Swallowed oxygen
That makes you float up?
Is it Dropsy?
Will your lungs swell?
It's depressing me
To see you struggle

Oh Penelope
Are you filled with air
Swallowed oxygen
That makes you float up?
Is it Dropsy?
Will your lungs swell?

It's depressing me
To see you struggle
I'm treading water with my oars
Glass galleons anchored, oceans floor
I'm diving down with all my gear
In search of treasure, para mi corazon

Take you to the forest
Let you feel the raindrops falling down
Seeping through your redscales
Eliminate the faucet
Eliminate the need for water
Replace it with a safe shell

Don't wanna see you floating upside down
On the top of the bowl when I
Come round to visit you
Don't wanna see you floating upside down

No girl
Need you there, Need you there, Need you there
Ooh Release that air
(I'm treading water with my oars
Glass galleons anchored, oceans floor
I'm diving down with all my gear
In search of treasure, para mi corazon)

Take you to the forest
Let you feel the raindrops falling down
Seeping through your redscales
Eliminate the faucet
Eliminate the need for water
Replace it with a safe shell
If they summon the rains now,
Are you gonna rise?

If they summon the rains now,
Are you gonna rise?

f*cking so simple | Reviewer: arfine tale | 3/8/14

so simple , it's about the goldfish, he was asking if he take penelope in the forest while rain is pouring in penelope will penelope be alive again, and another one, he is depress t0 see his goldfish suffer before dying. that's all

just a thought | Reviewer: incubi24 | 7/13/13

According to Pinback, it's about a dying goldfish ....but just like any song we all have our own interpretations about what we feel the song is about...in my interpretation I feel like its about a mermaid. as in he fell in love with a mermaid and obviously she can live without the water and the reference of the scales and "diving down with all my gear in search of treasure para mi corazon" feels like it fits my theory. he's searching for the mermaid....idk just a thought

I just love how you can easily picture different situations.
He most likely is singing about his dead goldfish, but you can feel the air to it. Like it's something more than a goldfish.
Maybe he was not only mourning the death of his goldfish, but also trying to sign out to a girl that there's something better than smoking.
Maybe it was a representation all together.

its a fish people | Reviewer: Anonymous | 7/29/10

ok so this is actually a pinback song and saosin covered it. But the singers fish died so he made a song for it. boom. simple. no hidden meanings, not every song has to be metaphorical. love it, because its amazing and so simple.

this song is so amazing!
i definitely don't think it's really about a goldfish, maybe the story about the dead goldfish is true but i believe that this is a beautiful metaphor for life..
i don't nessecarily think that it's about drugs either.
it's a reference to loving anyone who is going through tragedy or is lost.
you never want to see someone you love'floating upside down', allowing themselves to be hurt.
the oxygen refers to human nature, which is to be attracted to things even if they hurt us sometimes.
when he talks about taking her to the forest, he's talking about wanting to take her back to a private, peaceful place in her mind, somewhere where her struggles seem unimportant,
and i think when he says 'when i come back to visit you' he isn't referring to visiting in rehab, it may just be his acknowledgement that they may not be together forever, but he genuinely cares, so if they meet up later in life he hopes she's still ok

Alot of songs, well most songs..expecially alternative based songs have much deeper meanings than what is bluntly said through the lyrics. The song could talk about fishes, and lack of oxygen..but that could always symbolize something completely different. Thats the beauty of well written lyrics, it conveys what the artist was thinking/feeling and you get the pleasure of listening to it and getting a sense of what YOU think the song is really about. Im not going to say its about this, or that..but i think that everyone should really dig a tad bit deeper.

Fish | Reviewer: Annie | 5/5/09

I'm inclined to believe that it is about a fish, and I think there's nothing wrong with that. If they want to sing about a fish, let them. I don't feel that music has to have a deep meaning for it to be enjoyable. It was a beautiful song, whether it was about a fish or not.

Gold fish? | Reviewer: Aaron | 10/3/08

right.. every1 knows that penelope is a pinback cover right? Well i found out that the dude from pinback was actually dedicating this song to his goldfish when it died after some crazy dude dropd pizza in it's fish tank... lol why else would the lyrics talk about red scales... lol but then again... thats the magic of these types of songs. it's al about opinion. Interpret the lyrics as you please. Have a nice day. I LOVE SAOSIN!!!

becky your a goooood call!
maybe you should be listening to the wiggles eh?
im pretty sure they dont use metaphors.
dont know if coves gone deeper then the goldfish idea or not .. but if he has the dudes close to a genius.
i do heaaaps agree with you other guys on all the hidden parts to songs, but a lot of the time its our own imagination that makes that, songwriters may make a metaphor like this one and leave interpration open for a deeper meaning but it doesnt necessarily mean they had one.
the beauty of songwriting, the listener can make it whatever they want to be :)

did you ever stop to think that maybe it has to do with pot. Yes take that imagery of a gold fish, gulping oxygen and he doesn't want to find her floating upside down at the top of the bowl.

But consider this Consider the image of a girl smoking pot... to get away from reality. I'm not advocating it its just what i see... play along.

So this girl is smoking, and swallowing this heavy air. And floating around mentally. But there is something wrong. She is so lonely and feels like instead of floating she's spiraling down. And it pains him. But the beauty is that he knows that if he dives down into her deep emotions he will find the treasure for his heart. There is something that he loves about this girl so much that he would dive the depths to rescue her, and bring her to a forrest where instead of drowning in the endless abyss of an ocean she can walk with raindrops falling on her.
And then going back to the pot refrence.. (sorry but its what i think) When he comes around and he's there with her, he doesn't want to see her miserable and running to smoke from her bowl, and float down into the endless abyss.

Its brilliant imagery if you ask me... But that's the beauty of imagery its different for many. Either way great song.

If you think this song is truly about a goldfish and doesn't have any hidden, deeper meaning about something else then maybe you shouldn't be listening to this sort of music. Seeing as most alternative/indie/emo artists mask true feelings through representation and imagery of something else, you'll find it evident in more songs than just this.

Stocker | Reviewer: Anonymous | 7/11/08

@ becky : you need to start looking at different layers of the song. water could symbolize a vice, such as drinking. which girls have a shell? many do. it's called hypocrisy. i could rant on, i'm just shedding light on what i believe the song to be.

a man comparing a woman to a precious goldfish. he wants to cleanse her of her problems and show her the better things in life.

or the dude was just too stoned and wrote about a goldfish. it's up to them to write songs, to inspire us. if your inspiration takes you to think this song is about cows shooting lazers, then so be it. don't tell someone they are wrong.

Saosin is so amazing there's NO words to explain it. I love this song, It's great and really heartfilled. It's just so crazy how insane they are, I love them.

Oh Man! | Reviewer: Ben | 1/3/08

This song got me into Pinback, the original writers of the song. Saosin is godly and does an amazing cover, I think Cove's voice fits the song better than the original.
