Pedro the Lion is kind of like the Lemonheads in that they
realease album after album, yet the lineup rarely stays the
same for long. When they released their first album, the
"Whole EP", in 1997, Pedro the Lion were David Bazan, Nick
Peterson, Tim Schiefer, Travis Smith, and Brian Olson.
Eventually, all but David and Nick left the group. David
played bass for a while, and after they released a limited
edition acoustic 7-inch with Blake Wescott, Nick left and
David joined up with Johnathon Ford of Roadside Monument.
Together they recorded the critically acclaimed "It's Hard
to Find a Friend". Johnathon played bass and David playing
guitar and drums. They recruited Ben Brubaker to play drums
on tour. Then around the end of summer 1998, Johnathon
decided to move to More...

------ About the song Priests And Paramedics performed by Pedro The Lion
It shows how hopeless life can be. Life can simply suck. But, the lyrics are a bit weird, because a normal priest would actually do the opposite of that. He would preach how you should live your life and how life is a gift from God. But that priest is someone who interprets life differently, and he doesn't view it as a gift, he thinks it's a curse. And he doesn't know why people try to postpone it. But there is a reason why people want to live, why we want to live. There is just something always pulling us to stay alive, although some others not so much. We do not know why we try to stay alive, but paramedics help us do that. They lie to us and try to let us live. The whole song depends on how you view life.
Great song. | Reviewer: David

This is a really good song, although short, the point is a given. Obviously He found out she'd been cheating on him, but was too unsure with himself to accuse her of it.. that is until she started acting weird. Then yeah.. just another road to breakup. Great song though.

as a hospice caretaker, i have to say some of these lyrics pop into my head when i least expect them. i do not lie, it is my job to face death head on, to confront it and allow my residents to ask questions about death...some want to swift relief it will bring, i do have to say, sometimes after work i put this song on to get any heavy feelings i have on my heart out, and then i feel better and can get to the rest of my _life_.
music doing its job...

------ About the song Priests And Paramedics performed by Pedro The Lion
I never usually bother to read comments on anything I listen to or watch - but I did this time... and now I must join in.
Firstly - I think this is just a beautiful song. It's .... harsh and soft and melodic and unsettling and comedic and meloncholy all at once.
As everyone is saying (and it's pointless of me to say -) it's open to interpretation - but I like the parody pointed out by "joshuaquintana" - wouldn't it be lovely to be told the truth once in a while.
but lyrical crap aside - it's still a really moving song. I really like how quietly empty it is - and I'll probably listen to it till I'm completely sick of it.

it deffinately reminds you of the akwardness of death. The number one thing said by grown men right before they die is call out for their mothers. Death is unavoidable, but even after realizing it's pointless to attempt to cheat it, we still will always try to stay alive. We are such akward creatures, bumbling through the song of life and trying to stay in tune.

It is a great song. The way I see the song, because David is a christian, I think he might be trying to bring up the point that the whole purpose of a Christian is to spread the word of God, die, and go to heaven, but people do as much as they can to postpone that.
no one's posted in a long time. i love this song.
it's amazing.
& definitely, the interpretation is up to the listener.
the priest was telling the truth. honesty, even if it's ugly, is much more of a virtue than a pretty, and short-lived lie.
i can't imagine a priest ever really saying that to anyone. but i can't imagine a paramedic saying "yeah, man, you're gonna die." either
i hope if i were dying, someone would be straight up with me about it.

------ About the song Big Trucks performed by Pedro The Lion
This is such a great song, the meaning behind it is that you can't let yourself think that the world revolves around you. Everyone else has problems and you need to respect that. Also to elaborate, you should expect to be treated the way that you treat others. (i.e. the trucker getting in the way and the trans am flipping him off.) If you decide to flip someone off or ditch somebody or anything like that, expect it to happen to you somewhere along the line.

i like how easily bazan just slips in lines about his spirituality but doesnt push them or make them stick out. he treats them like any other lyrics and that makes the music unique. the band (bazan) is in its own genre and that is refreshing.

------ About the song Diamond Ring performed by Pedro The Lion
i think this song is about God and how people still reject him after all He has given us, including His only son.
I like it, the sad truth.
Well now since these comments have become as useless as youtube.
I agree with nathan that, "interpretation is up to the listener."
To me this song is about faith. It is ironic that the paramedics offered the dying man more comfort before he died that the priest offered his congregation. A "who is the real hero" kind of song.

Anyone can interrupt any work of art how they choose. I'm not a cynical art critic, nor am I all about everything being art... but with music, interpretation is up to the listener.

------ About the song Second Best performed by Pedro The Lion
these lyrics are so powerful for me because of their unapologetic honesty. they read out like ones thought process. his metaphors are so much more visual. im in love with this.
I love every pedro song and i think bazan is brilliant, i love the beauty in the simplicity of his songs, he says what he wants too say, blatant and honest, usually saying things that no one else will, i love how sarcastic he can be sometimes aswell, fantastic!

------ About the song Priests And Paramedics performed by Pedro The Lion
Steve, there is so much more to this song than the fact that the man dies. It's the circle of hopelessness in the man's life, and the priests life, and everyone else. That fact is we're all going to die, even though we work so hard and spend so much money to avoid it. The hopelessness is not at all realized.

Hey, I never review songs, but I just think this song is incredible - the lyrics are so vivid and moving. I love the line "Oh my god, am I gonna die?" To me this song is the utter helplessness of living a life of pain and sadness - obviously whoever this song is about had a failed marriage and messed up kids, and I love that he dies and the hopelessness is realized...Amazing song.

Poison of life | Reviewer: joshua pace
------ About the song The Poison performed by Pedro The Lion
This song, although slow and done with a single guitar, speaks volumes about pain in life. D. Bazan seems to have experienced much of it. It's easy to believe that he understands the rough spots in life. I particularly like his desciption of hell. Anyone who has been through a major breakup can testify to the validity of his analogy.
