Will Smith Parent's Just Don't Understand Lyrics

Last updated: 05/31/2013 06:07:37 PM

You know parents are the same

No matter time nor place

They don't understand that us kids

Are going to make some mistakes

So to you other kids all across the land

There's no need to argue

Parents just don't understand

I remember one year

My mom took me school shopping

It was me, my brother, my mom, oh, my pop, and my little sister

All hopped in the car

We headed downtown to the Gallery Mall

My mom started bugging with the clothes she chose

I didn't say nothing at first

I just turned up my nose

She said, "What's wrong? This shirt cost $20"

I said, "Mom, this shirt is plaid with a butterfly collar!"

The next half hour was the same old thing

My mother buying me clothes from 1963

And then she lost her mind and did the ultimate

I asked her for Adidas and she bought me Zips!

I said, "Mom, what are you doing, you're ruining my rep"

She said, "You're only sixteen, you don't have a rep yet"

I said, "Mom, let's put these clothes back, please"

She said "no, you go to school to learn not for a fashion show"

I said, "This isn't Sha Na Na, come on Mom, I'm not Bowzer

Mom, please put back the bell-bottom Brady Bunch trousers

But if you don't want to I can live with that but

You gotta put back the double-knit reversible slacks"

She wasn't moved - everything stayed the same

Inevitably the first day of school came

I thought I could get over, I tried to play sick

But my mom said, "No, no way, uh-uh, forget it"

There was nothing I could do, I tried to relax

I got dressed up in those ancient artifacts

And when I walked into school, it was just as I thought

The kids were cracking up laughing at the clothes Mom bought

And those who weren't laughing still had a ball

Because they were pointing and whispering

As I walked down the hall

I got home and told my Mom how my day went

She said, "If they were laughing you don't need them,

"Cause they're not good friends"

For the next six hours I tried to explain to my Mom

That I was gonna have to go through this about 200 more times

So to you other kids all across the land

There's no need to argue

Parents just don't understand

Oh-kay, here's the situation

My parents went away on a week's vacation and

They left the keys to the brand new Porsche

Would they mind?

Umm, well, of course not

I'll just take it for a little spin

And maybe show it off to a couple of friends

I'll just cruise it around the neighborhood

Well, maybe I shouldn't

Yeah, of course I should

Pay attention, here's the thick of the plot

I pulled up to the corner at the end of my block

That's when I saw this beautiful girlie girl walking

I picked up my car phone to perpetrate like I was talking

You should've seen this girl's bodily dimensions

I honked my horn just to get her attention

She said, "Was that for me?"

I said, "Yeah"

She said, "Why?"

I said, "Come on and take a ride with a helluva guy"

She said, "How do I know you're not sick?

You could be some deranged lunatic"

I said, "C'mon toots - my name is the Prince =

Beside, would a lunatic have a Porsche like this?"

She agreed and we were on our way

She was looking very good and so was I, I must say - word

We hit McDonald's, pulled into the drive

We ordered two Big Macs and two large fries with Cokes

She kicked her shoes off onto the floor

She said, "Drive fast, speed turns me on"

She put her hand on my knee, I put my foot on the gas

We almost got whiplash, I took off so fast

The sun roof was open , the music was high

And this girl's hand was steadily moving up my thigh

She had opened up three buttons on her shirt so far

I guess that's why I didn't notice that police car

We're doing ninety in my Mom's new Porsche

And to make this long story short - short

When the cop pulled me over I was scared as hell

I said, "I don't have a license but I drive very well, officer"

I almost had a heart attack that day

Come to find out the girl was a twelve-year-old runaway

I was arrested, the car was impounded

There was no way for me to avoid being grounded

My parents had to come off from vacation to get me

I'd rather be in jail than to have my father hit me

My parents walked in

I got my grip, I said, "Ah, Mom, Dad, how was your trip?"

They didn't speak
I said, "I want to plead my case"

But my father just shoved me in the car by my face

That was a hard ride home, I don't know how I survived

They took turns -

One would beat me while the other one was driving

I can't believe it, I just made a mistake

Well parents are the same no matter time nor place

So to you other kids all across the land

Take it from me

Parents just don't understand

Great Song!! | Reviewer: Teen to Momma | 5/31/13

I was a teenager when this song came out...I thought it was the funniest thing I ever heard!! I played it ALL the time. Pure lyrics gold!! Now I am married with a teenager...Guess what??? Still funny as all get out! I even have it as my teenagers ringtone!! Funny to listen and remember when I was a kid as well as what my kid thinks of me now!

It's just a song, not the meaning of life... | Reviewer: A Nony Mouse | 9/28/12

We don't need to get all philosophical here, peeps. It's just a song. It's catchy, cute, it rhymes, and I still remember the words twenty years later. Kids grow up and that's nothing new. Every generation thinks that the previous generation doesn't understand. Nobody actually needs to understand anyone else - ever; we just need to be respectful and understanding in the way we deal with each other. I seriously love this song! Relax and enjoy the fun in it. It's even more amusing if you watch the video.

i just think that this song is somehow related to my problem. I know that this song was not a problem for u at all but india this is a major problem budddy. I'm 14 yrs but my parents think thay i 'm still a child. No one knows what you think because they're not u. sometimes u have strict parents others have leninant ones, but we must remember that they are all humans and aren't always right.

Philosophy has never been so interesting... | Reviewer: Anonymous | 12/18/11

Dear Mr. Smith
I deeply believe your song is the most engaging piece of philosophical word that i would rank you higher than Plato. You truly hit the spot with this song.

Parents DO NOT understand what their teens are going thru to a large degree. I am 41 and am not too proud to say I don't. Yes, I was a teen once, but NEVER in the 21st century! Times change and so do a lot of the challenges and issues teens face. For instance, I never had a cell phone and so relished my quiet times. Kids today panick if they go to the bathroom without it for fear they will miss something while they wipe! Oh the agonies of being a teen! Should be grateful your parents can afford to get you all of those toys you MUST have but aren't essential to life.

Parents Just Don't Understand | Reviewer: Amanda | 12/12/10

I loved this song, my mom hated it. now I have teenage kids and I still love it and I still see the point. Parents and Kids don't understand EACH OTHER. Like in Freaky Friday... parents forget how hard being a kid is, we romanticize it remembering only certain things like "all I had to do is keep my room clean and wash the dishes, man i wish it was like that now" or how great it was that mom cooked out dinner for us. We forget how difficult it is with our hormones blasting us with mood swings, our bodies going all Alice In Wonderland on us, and difficulties with teachers, classmates, and PARENTS all while we're trying to figure out who we are. We forget how oppressive it feels when someone else is in charge of every aspect of your life (what time you go to bed, wake up, who you talk to and how long, what you can and and can not do).

Actually they do understand | Reviewer: Anonymous | 7/31/10

I think it's funny that a 12 year old kid who hasn't lived hardly any years at all thinks they can say their parents don't understand when that parent has been alive a lot, lot longer and has actually lived through the same period of life that the 12 year old is living through. If you really think parents don't understand then the truth is it's you that does not understand. Believe me...parents understand way, way more than you think they do. Perhaps you would be wise to listen to experience once in a while. Use your ears instead of your mouths.

Flash back... | Reviewer: Kevin | 1/17/10

So I figured I’d take a stroll down memory lane and look the lyrics up for this song. This song came out in the late 80’s, when Will Smith was a teenager himself. I kinda wonder what he thinks about this song now that he’s a father like I do. I have a history, so to speak, with this song. I performed it at my high school variety show in 1993 and got 2nd place. I made it into a whole stage act and keeped it entertaining for everyone in the audience. I remember I had to change some stuff around because the school said I couldn’t say “Hell” while performing the song. (Yes, back in ’93 censorship was strong) Anyways, I read the comments made by everyone and I can’t help but laugh to myself. It’s amazing how your point of view changes over time. No matter how much you say it won’t when you’re young, it’s just a part of life and it will happen.

you guys are dumb. | Reviewer: fuckers | 1/30/09

This song is not disrespectful, is he talking about drugs and violence? I think not. It's a cute, catchy song. I happen to be a parent myself and thoroughly enjoy it :) It's from a kid's point of view, and that's why kids like it.

Yeah, you're right, parents are trying to make our world better. I'm a kid, too, and a lot of my friends think I'm strange because I share your views on parents. I respect your views, I really do, so don't be insulted when I totally bash your review.
It's supposed to be comical. He's a parent, he knows. But, there are a lot of kids that think that way. C'mon, how can a song be serious when a kid steals his dad's car and DOESN'T expect to get in trouble if he gets caught? I think you need to relax just a little bit.
