Paperbag Writer Lyrics - Radiohead

Review The Song (5)

Blow into this paper bag
Go home and stop grinning at everyone
Blow into this paper bag
Go home and stop grinning at everyone

It was nice when it lasted but now it's gone
It was nice when it lasted but now it's gone

Blow into this paper bag

Take your armour off, you're not under attack
Take your armour off, you're not under attack

Come on, come on

Blow into this paper bag
Go home and stop grinning at everyone
Blow into this paper bag
Go home and stop grinning at everyone

Like they were honeybees or a plague of rats
Take your armour off, you're not under attack

Blow into this paper bag
Blow into this paper bag

Social anxiety | Reviewer: Anonymous | 7/5/13

This song is about dealing with social anxiety, and trying to look normal while you're actually very distressed.

Blowing in a paper bag is a classic way to deal with hyperventilation, which is common in an anxiety attack. A grin is like a smile that is the opposite of a smile, a forced smile. The armour is the same thing seen from a different way: you protect yourself from everyone because you fear them, but the song tells you to relax, because the other people aren't going to do you any harm, they are not against you (rats/bees).

so funnyyy | Reviewer: Anonymous | 8/16/10

I had this feeling several times, when you are grinning at every one and you think you are under attack all the time and by every one :) and the best solution will be: blow into the paper bag to get co2 and relax and go home :D of course this feeling is the after-effect of long term high on crack :D nice oneeee

I love how desolate and disturbed this song sounds, but yet its something you could go into a goth club and dance too, y'know? Paperbag Writer has become one of my favorite songs. I also think it is a reference to The Beatles "Paperback Writer" (I'm not a fan, a friend of mine told me that).

the cool thing about this song is that radiohead released this poem/quote (i think originally on their crazy complicated artistic website) that goes:

paperbag advice. (to be stamped on the side of all paperbags)
side A. Blow into this paperbag go home and stop grinning at everyone.
side B. If the boss sits there and accuses you of stealing, of not having the right motivation, dont just sit there and take it, hit the fucker in the face.

That eery tune in the background, and the droney soft voice, then that funky bass line. I just love this song. It's the type of song that you hear it a couple of times and you have to know the lyrics so you can sing along.
