A Perfect Circle Over Lyrics

Last updated: 10/18/2011 11:00:00 AM

Been over
Been over this before
Been over and over
Been over this before

And over
Been over this before
So over this
Been over this
So over this
Been over this
So over this before

More thoughts. | Reviewer: Kyle | 10/17/11

-- "Disposition" covers the same topic but more neutrally, generally.

Tongue-in-cheek, Maynard is making fun of anyone who feels the topics discussed in his music -- be it Tool or APC -- is new or revolutionary. He isn't being a condescension, he's simply stating reality: we've been over all of this before: war, politics, love, hate, human fallibility, religion. Not only has Maynard's music covered these topics before, so has thousands of years of history. Still we find ourselves having an existential epiphany while we listen to touching music like this... simply for it's meaning, it's sound, and it's words. Reverberations inspire Maynard -- a reactive artist, and he knows that his ideas aren't original, only his words.

More generally, the speaker here is tired and pissed off. He's sick of talking about it all with us. Do something about it. Live a life with vigilance and meaning: strength. Don't paradoxically toss around this music in your head, asking the same topic-specific questions over and over, learn to play with generalities, evolve, and live Maynard's dream: work towards a world even Bill Hicks would be proud of.
