Review about Opium Of the People Marx and the masses | Reviewer: Navina | 6/9/09 Well being a philosophy student, as far as I understand, the very title of the song is a reference to Karl Marx's opium of the masses. What Marx elucidates is that religion is an opiate of the masses. Religion is regarded as the core of our human existence and everyone merely follows religion because we are conditioned to believe that is the way we should live. According to religion. Other than that we have no identity. In a sense, it defines who we are. Opium as we all know is used for medicinal purposes as a sedative but it also permits humans to have fantastical visions. Therefore, Marx viewed religion as a sedative that subdues people into believing that it governs our existence. It places people in a state of pacification because anything contested against the grounds of religion is null and void. Marx also characterised religion as being somewhat of an idealistic way of controlling society.This is where it's fantastical nature fits in. In reference to Slipknot's lyrics, the song alludes to a similar idea. People do not think for themselves. They are fashioned by a veil of ignorance that blinds them from being who they really are.
