Founded in 1990 in Sweden by vocalist and guitarist Mikael
Akerfeldt, Opeth specialized in fusing progressive-rock,
folk music, and heavy-metal.
Orchid (Candlelight, 1995) cast Akerfeldt's death-metal
growling and Peter Lindgren's epically distorted guitar in
roles (mid-tempo interludes, acoustic melodies, long and
tortured songs) that were not traditionally associated to
heavy metal, despite sounding like heavy metal.

Morningrise (Candlelight, 1996), their masterpiece, refined
that manner, particularly in the monumental suite Black
Rose Immortal.

My Arms Your Hearse (Candlelight, 1998), featuring the new
rhythm section of drummer Martin Lopez and bassist Martin
Mendez, sounded both more aggressive and more traditional.
It featured some of their most brutal More...

    Review about Opeth

Hours of wealth | Reviewer: Yanal
------ About the song Hours of Wealth performed by Opeth

In my opinion its simple and deeply about a phase of life, a phase of confusion in which a person is just letting feelings of their chest in order to be able to step forward. No suicidal concepts in these words " one I am sure of my task I shall rise again" and regarding the structure of the song its actually a typical jazz concept in which its divided into an intro, bridge, verse and the smoothest outro, except that its not common to find this structures consumed by these kind of minor scales and genre

------ About the song The Drapery Falls performed by Opeth

A perfect contrast between the light and dark sides of metal, smooth clean vocals punctuated by dark growls, sweeping epic guitar riffs, followed by furious double kick peddle. Any fan of Opeth will find this work incredibly beautiful, and it is enjoyable for most fans of metal and good music in general.

        ------ About artist/band Opeth

Huh... every comment was a real feeling about this band. I thought i will never find people that like Opeth as I do.I'm really mad about them, and i have to say that they turned me away from many other bands that i liked. It's just i can't listen any other band as I do with Opeth. They have everything i want: death metal, grunts, clean vocals, guitar solos, mellow sad song which they take me away from this world especialy: Benightet,Pattern in the ivy, burden and many others.. but don't mean that the others are shit... U just have to listen to them and u'll understand me...
their music is like drugs: If u get into Opeth, U'll never walk aside!!!
Greetings to all from The Great Albania!! \w/

------ About the song When performed by Opeth

Opeth is a unique band, I dont think there is going to be any band in the future like Opeth...ever...
so anyways, Opeth is not a black metal band nor a death metal band, Opeth is proggressive metal with death metal influences, especially at the brutal vocals.

One of their masterpieces. | Reviewer: Anonymous
------ About the song Hex Omega performed by Opeth

Saw them live on the "Progressive Nation Tour 2009" along with Big Elf (interesting) and Dream Theater (great). Since then I keep digging through their songs. Melancolic, epic, eclectic, touching in part. This songs has got it all. Great. See you next time, guys.

------ About the song The Moor performed by Opeth

My guess is the guy - one for whom is condemned in the pits of darkness and pure evil since birth - is returning to the one he loves, known as Melinda. The townspeople (all being of the light and pure faithfulness of the lord I'm guessing) are fearful of his presence, and curse him with their peepers. The mood of the song means he's obviosly pissed off at what has happened to him, being banished from his home and now coming to his love who's surrounded by other's alike his birthplace. Although, despite his nature and hate for many, once upon a time he fell in love with Melinda, and he's hoping for forgiveness as he knows she's kind and young an sweet on her soul.

In short, it's a story about a man of darknes after a lady of the light.

    Bleak | Reviewer: Fairy
------ About the song Bleak performed by Opeth

I think it is one of the greatest opeth song and one of the best songs in BWP in particular, It's not my favorite album but this song spesifically really got me into opeth I love the way Mikael changes from shouting to singing clean he is so good I can't wait to see them perform here :)

Isolation Years - Opeth Rev | Reviewer: mZAk
------ About the song Isolation Years performed by Opeth

    Progresive Sadness??
Maybe... Isolation years is a very simple song. Usual chords taken by the Åkerfeldt's hand to the passive sadness in each verse. The chorus wating for "Pasive sadness" when it arrives the moment evolves to the "i want to cry"... Sanked in the Active sadness of chorus, maybe about an old woman letter, and the pain of being alone all these years cuz he's gone.
With the simple and repetitive rythm guitar. 3 dynamics, intro, verse & chorus 2 times. simple and enough. hypnotic. the second guitar solo take your feet and sanked u in the song, next the voice is really explaining the song, the passion! so deep... when the voice reach the climax in chorus is the perfect moment to suffer... keyboards is the feeling of song, without these chorus fx, the song goes down, not the whole song, i mean the "i want to cry moment"... And this perfect progresive sadness cocktail, 2 times in the song!! (2x solo not included)

        ------ About artist/band Opeth

I came across Opeth a couple of years back because my sister listens to their music non stop and it's only a few weeks back that I realized how amazing they are!

First song I heard was To Bid You Farewell, and at first, I was convinced that they were an English band, mainly because their melodic style reminded me of people like Edgar Allan Poe and the historic era.
Then I heard other songs like 'For Absent Friends and 'Bleak', which both blew me away with their utter brilliance and effortless intricacy. I came across some information and I found out hat they are Swedish, and they are by far, the most amazing band to come across from those lands. Their style is unlike any other, Mikael's lyrical sense is widely poetic and deep, and the power buried within most of their songs is beyond my imagination. The fact that smooth, relaxing songs can be composed aswell (For instance, Benighted) also amazes me.

This is a true band, making true music, and their music will never discontinue my amazement.

------ About the song Ghost of Perdition performed by Opeth

Simply, perfection. Perfect song to a perfect album to a perfect career. What more could you ask for? Well, Opeth deliver more everytime, they never fail to impress. Ghost of Perdition is not just a beautifully-orchestrated and crafted song, it employs Mikael's tangible Death Metal growls and soft, melodic vocals in a perfect, seamless blend; from a brutal assault of Death to lament in split-seconds. A perfect live song. You never know what Opeth will do next - Ghost of Perdtion is another fine example of the unpredictable being executed masterfully

    Simply awesome | Reviewer: Rakat
------ About the song In My Time Of Need performed by Opeth

A really soothing song. Melodically beautiful. And a real fun song to play on the guitar. And Opeth's melo tracks can really control your emotion. Other songs like Hope Leaves and Windowpane is really awesome. And also I must mention about the track called Isolation Years from their Ghost Reveries album. The melody is just...too beautiful

------ About the song When performed by Opeth

They're not a death metal band per se; I like to classify them more as black progressive metal, as the guy below me said. But they are just such a talented band. Not many bands can make a 14:10 minute song interesting throughout (In Mist She Was Standing), but these guys pull it off flawlessly. Mikael Akerfeldt has one of the best growls I've heard, and his singing voice is just amazing.

    Great song. | Reviewer: B.A.C
------ About the song Hours of Wealth performed by Opeth

I completely agree with Dye's interpretation. And the concept, as someone said, is about a man who kills his mother, but the part about him worshipping satan is completely unfounded. Why do people still insist on associating metal with satanism?

------ About the song In My Time Of Need performed by Opeth

They are different from all other bands...
Mikael has and incredible voice, and all the others are really talented musicans.. i like they're mellow songs, especialy benighted.. no words to describe them... simply nr 1!!!

------ About the song Ghost of Perdition performed by Opeth

I hear all these screamo bands, and these "death" metal bands today and you can't a hear damn thing they say, Opeth speaks it smooth, and the instrumentals are redundant or over powering, and i like the mix of instruments at the end. All these new metal bands are all pussies.

Surely it's about | Reviewer: Anonymous
------ About the song Hours of Wealth performed by Opeth

Surely the song is about someone on the verge of commiting suicide. It is a thoroughly beautiful song that transports the listener to the melancholoy place it's being sung from. Something in the way it's written, and there's not a lot to it despite not following any kind of traditional song structure, it draws you in and forces you pay attention. Awesome. It's up there Hope Leaves.

------ About the song Bleak performed by Opeth

My friend had gotten me into Opeth. We used to listen to it while we blazed. One day i bought BWP and i sat down and for one reason or another i turned on this song first and ever since then i have fallen in love with this song. I listen to it every day. Since then i also have purchased all of opeths albums...all i can say is that this is my favorite band ever.

Face Of Melinda | Reviewer: Anonymous
------ About the song Face Of Melinda performed by Opeth

This was when he came back to Melinda, and tells her that he still loves her. She tells him that she's a nun and surprises herself with the final line "My Promise is made, but my heart is thine." That is what she said last to him. Meaning, she is sworn as a nun but she still loves him. Good song.

    Underrated | Reviewer: Wesley
------ About the song Hours of Wealth performed by Opeth

I think that this is one of the most underrated songs on the album. True while songs like "Beneath the Mire" and "Ghost of Perdition" are great too, this song doesn't get as much recognition as it should. Very sad and melancholic.

As regarding to what the song is about, you have to first know that the entire album Ghost Reveries (except for the song "Isolation Years") is a concept album about someone who kills his mother and worships Satan.

Now this song is about the character isolating himself from the outside world.
