Skillet Open Wounds Lyrics

Last updated: 05/20/2009 11:00:00 AM

In the dark with the music on
Wishing I was somewhere else
Taking all your anger out on me, somebody help
I would rather rot alone
Than spend a minute with you
I'm gone, I'm gone

And you can't stop me from falling apart
'Cause my self-destruction is all your fault

(Chorus)How could you, how could you,
how could you hate me?
When all I ever wanted to be was you?
How could you, how could you, how could you love me?
When all you ever gave me were open wounds?
open wounds.

Downstairs the enemy sleeps
Leaving the TV on
Watching all the dreams we had turn into static
Doesn't matter what I do
Nothing's gonna change
I'm never good enough

And you can't stop me from falling apart
Cause my self-destruction is all your fault!

Tell me why you broke me down and
betrayed my trust in you I'm not giving up,
giving in when will this war end?
When will it end?

You can't stop me from falling apart (3X)
'Cause my self-destruction is all your fault.

How could you, how could you,
How could you, how could you,
All I ever wanted to be was you,
All you ever gave me were open wounds!

Skillet ROCKS! This song shows the need for a Savior. It clearly refers to the daily hurt that a person can face in a troublesome home filled with any type of abuse or even neglect. The lyrics explain that the character only wants to be like the parents that they see as their models, so illogical that when the child tries to hurt themselves (self-destruction), those models might berate the child and tell them that they are wrong...but if the parents can abuse the child, why can't the child impose the punishment themselves? The song reverberates the universal human cries: "I'm falling apart,"My world is crashing down," and "I wish I could end it all." It's the feeling of entrapment, common to so many children, youth AND ADULTS! Our experiences can leave us to carry, throughout our entire lives, memories of hurt, disgrace, unforgiveness and shame.
But thankfully, Skillet gives a sense of hope when they sing "I'm not giving up." We can sing about our hurt, our dissatisfaction and our feelings of helplessness, but we must ALWAYS REMEMBER that we can find hope and that if we seek the ONE and ONLY TRUE SAVIOR Jesus Christ, we WILL find THE SOLUTION towards building up our esteem and our worlds again.
Check our SKILLET's 'THE LAST NIGHT' for the message of hope. God tells you today: 'This is the last night you'll spend alone, I'll hold you in my arms and I WON'T LET GO, I'm everything you need me to be.' He's the parent who will always care for you and He won't let you down.

Makes you think | Reviewer: Anonymous | 7/16/08

"Open Wounds" had me singing along the first time I heard it. It comes off as a very hard, almost alternative song, and it relates the daily strain and pain of a Christian's life into (very loud and hard) music and words -- it implements a sort of rocker/punkish sound, which draws in youth and makes them think (hard). If they listen to other songs by Skillet, it helps them realize.

Great job. I bet most people could apply this to their lives. It's not supposed to help you (unless you realize it's about the stress of your average Christian's life), it's supposed to make you think about what you can do to make it better (which, in turn, leads to their intention -- to spread Christianity subtly into the youth of the world, which they're very good at since this type of music is beloved by youths).

To CAN'T UNDERSTAND | Reviewer: K A B | 11/1/07

The reason this song was written was to open up your mind and to ask these questions as a christian believer amd to understand what people go through on a daily bases.

The song "Open Wounds" is such a great song. It can stand for many things, such as child abuse. One of my friends cries everytime he hears this song because all he wanted to be as a little kid was his dad, but after his mom's death, his dad started to take out his rage and anger on him. He now lives on his own because he was able to get away from his father's rage and get past the horrible time he went through at such a young adolecent age!! Skillet is so great about speaking to other people and reaching out and relating to them in their songs!! GREAT JOB SKILLET!
