One Foot In Front Of The Other Lyrics - Bright Eyes

Review The Song (10)

If you walk away, I'll walk away
First tell me which road you will take
I don't want to risk our paths crossing some day
So you walk that way, I'll walk this way

The future hangs over our heads
And it moves with each current event
Until it falls around like a cold, steady rain
Just stay in when it's looking this way

The moon's laying low in the sky
Forcing everything metal to shine
And the sidewalk holds diamonds,
Like a jewlery store case
They argue, "Walk this way, no, walk this way."

Laura's asleep in my bed
As I'm leaving she wakes up and says,
"I dreamed you were carried away,
sponsored links
On the crest of a wave. Baby, don't go away.
Come here."

There's kid's playing guns in the street
And one's pointing his tree branch at me
So I put my hands up, I say "Enough is enough.
If you walk away, I'll walk away."
And he shot me dead

I found a liquid cure
For my land-locked blues
It will pass away, like a slow parade
It's leaving, but I don't know how soon

The world's got me dizzy again
You'd think after 22 years I'd be used to the spin
And it only feels worse when I stay in one place
So I'm always pacing around,
Or walking away

I'm drinking the ink from my pen
And I'm balancing history books up on my head
But it all boils down to one quotable phrase
"If you love something, give it away."

A good woman would pick you apart
A box full of suggestions for a possible heart
And you may be offended, and you may be afraid
But don't walk away, don't walk away

We made love on the living room floor
With the noise in the background from a televised war
And in that defeaning pleasure
I thought I heard someone say
"If we walk away, they'll walk away."

But greed is a bottomless pit
And our freedom's a joke, we're just taking a piss
And the whole world must watch
The sad comic display
If you're still free, start running away
'Cuz we're coming for ya

We're gonna read them out

I've grown tired of holding this pose
I feel more like a stranger each time I come home
So I'm making a deal with the devils of fame
Saying "Let me walk away, please."

You'll be free, child, once you have died
From the shackles of language
And measurable time
And then we can trade places
Play musical graves
Tell them walk away, walk away, walk away

So I'm up at dawn
Putting on my shoes
I just want to make a clean escape
I'm leaving, but I don't know where to
I know I'm leaving, but I don't know where to

if you walk away, i'll walk away | Reviewer: Anonymous | 10/27/09

Beautiful song.
Personally, I prefer "One Foot In Front Of The Other" over "Land Locked Blues"
It's just more suited to my taste.

Conor Oberst is an amazingly talented lyricist.
And this song is so relate-able.

Walking away is difficult to do, but sometimes very necessary.

two names | Reviewer: jo | 9/10/08

it's off a saddle creek compilation. it's called Saddle Creek 50.

I liek this version heaps better than landlocked blues, the music is simpler and makes the lyrics stand out. Such a beautiful song!

This an amazing song:

"But greed is a bottomless pit
And our freedom's a joke, we're just taking a piss
And the whole world must watch
The sad comic display
If you're still free, start running away
'Cuz we're coming for ya"

This song says so much, it's really beautiful. At first, Bright Eyes bugged me because Conor's voice is really whiny but I later realized that without his voice, the music probably wouldnt be as good, as strange as that sounds.

loveeee | Reviewer: Sarah | 9/26/07

bright eyes is amazinggg. i love all their songs. this one is great. the lyrics say soo much. there's a great meaning, and the vocal imperfections add to their growing popularity :]

wrong song title??? | Reviewer: Dee | 7/28/07

not wrong title. | Reviewer: yourmother | 5/20/07

there are two versions of this song, "Land Locked Blues" is the slower one, "One Foot In Front of the Other" is faster. Same lyrics.

Wrong title? | Reviewer: Thomas | 4/12/07

Maybe it's just me... but isn't the title of this song "Land locked blues"? It says so on the cover...

... A life style | Reviewer: Katie | 9/15/06

It stopped being music for me, I've adapted it as a life style- it's not just lyrics is a biographical account of my life, and my dreams hopes and wishes for how I one day would like to view my own life... so yeah, it's more.

so I wasn't a fan of bright eyes at first, I never gave the lyrics a chance because I found the music too slow, Kathleen got me interested, upon first hearing this song I thought it was catchy, but then I took a deeper look at the meaning and lyrics, something in it hit me, "If you walk away, I'll walk away", can anyone even imagine a world were we can all just 'walk away'? I only wish it were so.

wow | Reviewer: Anonymous | 10/1/04

the lyrics are so deep, when I first heard this I stopped dead clinging to every word
