Old Shep Lyrics - Elvis Presley

Review The Song (5)

(words & music by Foley - Westpar)
When I was a lad
And old Shep was a pup
Over hills and meadows we'd stray
Just a boy and his dog
We were both full of fun
We grew up together that way

I remember the time at the old swimmin' hole
When I would have drowned beyond doubt
But old Shep was right there
To the rescue he came
He jumped in and then pulled me out

As the years fast did roll
Old Shep he grew old
His eyes were fast growing dim
And one day the doctor looked at me and said
I can do no more for him Jim

With hands that were trembling
I picked up my gun
And aimed it at Shep's faithful head
I just couldn't do it
I wanted to run
I wish they would shoot me instead

He came to my side
And looked up at me
And laid his old head on my knee
I had struck the best friend that a man ever had
I cried so I scarcely could see

Old Shep he has gone
Where the good doggies go
And no more with old Shep will I roam
But if dogs have a heaven
There's one thing I know
Old Shep has a wonderful home

A beautiful song. So sad. Ive never heard another version except Elvis's version, but it goes with out saying - he did a lovely job. He puts so much feeling into it. I would have loved to have heard him sing this at the fair in Tupelo when he was about ten. Xx

Memories of Old Shep | Reviewer: Iggy | 12/13/08

I was born in 1942, so Elvis was popular as I was growing up. Old Shep probable reminded me of Tippi, a dog I had in the second grade that was run over and killed. My family didn't seem to understand why I was so sentimental about this song.

When my son was just a litle boy he would get in bed with me and ask me to sang him a song, well after a while I got around to sanging [old shep]It has always been one of my favoret songs of Elvis, from then on my son would ask me to sang old shep, when it would come to the part where old shep got shot he would bawl his eyes out.He would cry every time that I sang it,that song will always live with me. This song was sung to me by my Grandfather, I would have been about 8yrs (now 66)and he was 60+. I remember this grand old man would not sing the verse about shooting old shep , he was so sensitive to our feelings. It was several years later when I heard Elvis ' version that I heard that verse for the first time. It is one of my all time favourites and sing it when ever I think of my Grand father, pretty often.
