I sing and drink, and sleep on floors, and try hard not to be annoyed, by all these people worrying about me. So when I'm suffering through some awful drive, you occasionally cross my mind. Review about Oh, You are the Roots That Sleep Beneath my Feet and Hold the Earth in Place love song | Reviewer: Adriana | 4/24/09 i'll agree with what someone said before about "The person that he's singing about is a constant figure of love and admiration from his past...possibly 'the one who got away'." the part about the ship gives me the idea that he is talking about the relationship with that person and his own cynical or pessimistic view on life- he is the ship, he's basically got the idea of nothing in life is guaranteed but death and taxes, and no matter how much you may want to hold onto someone or a relationship or have this idealistic view that you could last, but "when the wind starts to shift, there's no argument," or you cant avoid the end if its going to happen one way or another. the third stanza, to me, sounded like him in present day and how he is coping with the end of the relationship, where he is in life now, and how he still thinks of the other person and hopes that person still cares enough to worry or wonder about him. it seemed like in the beginning and middle of the song, he sounded slightly bitter about his attachment to said person, but in the end looks on the lighter aspect of it in an optimistic, you-saved-me-and-i-thank-you kind of way. im not sure about the last two lines of the song. i do agree that it could be what another person said: "traditionally in many cultures, husbands and wives and other family members would be buried together or even shared a single grave-site. the last lines reflect on this, where finally in the end, the speaker and the 'special someone' have reached that form of intimacy and closeness as a unity." anyway this is just my take on it for anonymous | Reviewer: aj_was_here@msn.com | 12/8/08 its truly a simple but moving song. first of all, it involves the obvious metaphor as shown in the title, that is, the subject is being referred to as roots that support the speaker. water is a classic archetype that connotes many things: in this case, its interpretive; water could mean sadness/the state of being lonely, or even tears specifically. as for the second verse, responding to anonymous' quick interpretation, to me the second verse reiterates a classical philosophical concept: an existentialist (and almost a slight nihilistic) view on life. this makes sense especially when oberst says "debate what's truly permanent" and "but there's no argument" clearly sharing his belief that even though this idea can be discussed, if a person was to believe that nothing else existed besides themselves and what is within their perception (like the ship) then that person should also agree that the argument doesn't exist since it is outside of what does exist. intertwined with this belief is still the overall theme of a certain 'special someone'. the third part of the song reveals a character that drinks and sleeps on floors, which can be seen as very pathetic, yet the character does not want pity "by all these people worrying about me". however with that said, his hidden hope is that the 'special someone' "is still among them" that is the people who care. in short, it is a little yet complex controversy that is evident in many people. finally the last chorus of the song is all about unveiling and ending. the drawing of the curtain and "seeing the light" symbolizes the knowledge and realization of this 'special someone''s importance to this character, with which the character feels that "a lifetime melts away" meaning that time any particular relevance but passes quickly. traditionally in many cultures, husbands and wives and other family members would be buried together or even shared a single grave-site. the last lines reflect on this, where finally in the end, the speaker and the 'special someone' have reached that form of intimacy and closeness as a unity. quick interpretation | Reviewer: Anonymous | 7/18/08 This song gives me the chills and I'll give an interpretation- however wrong it may be. The person that he's singing about is a constant figure of love and admiration from his past...possibly 'the one who got away'. I think the ship story relates to how he travels everywhere but its still this one person who he always cares for and helps him feel some kind of inner peace knowing they exist.
