Of Wolf And Man Lyrics

Review The Song (32)Print the Lyrics
Off through the new day's mist I run
Out from the new day's mist I have come
I hunt
Therefore I am
Harvest the land
Taking of the fallen lamb

Off through the new day's mist I run
Out from the new day's mist I have come
We shift
Pulsing with the earth
Company we keep
Roaming the land while you sleep

(shape shift) Nose to the wind
(shape shift) Feeding I've been
(move swift) All senses clean
(earth's gift) Back to the meaning, Back to the meaning of... Life

Bright is the moon high in starlight
Chill in the air cold as steel tonight
We shift
Call of the wild
Fear in your eyes
It's later than you realized

(shape shift) Nose to the wind
(shape shift) Feeding I've been
(move swift) All senses clean
(earth's gift) Back to the meaning, Back to the meaning of...Life
(guitar solo)
I feel a change
Back to a better day
(shape shift)
Hair stands on the back of my neck
(shape shift)
In wildness is the preservation of the world

So seek the wolf in thyself

(shape shift) Nose to the wind
(shape shift) Feeding I have been
(move swift) All senses clean
(earth's gift) Back to the meaning, back to the meaning of wolf and man

Review about Of Wolf And Man

Alpha's Two Cents... | Reviewer: Alpha Wolfie | 6/2/09

1.) This song is a fantastic song, regardless of how you take it. I've never been the biggest fan of Metallica, and yet I still find myself very much drawn to this song. It's musical styling and great sense of power within the song mixed with well thought-out lyrics makes for a great listen.

2.) I can see the points people have made regarding this song being about the White-Wolf game "Werewolf: The Apocalypse" though I would be hesitant to actually state this is what the song was in reference to. I would agree that while the song could easily be taken in its literal sense (the idea of shapeshifting, heightened senses, basically becoming a lupine/werewolf creature) it can also be taken to be a reference to man's inner nature. We all inherently have a connection to the nature from whence we have come. While we shroud ourselves in creature comforts to help us forget this fact, it still stands as a fact none-the-less. We are all born without clothes, and without being taught the laws we now abide (most of us, anyway,) we would still be very much wild.

3.) Likening man to wolf is not entirely that far-fetched. While we may not be physiologically the same, there are many values which man holds to which are espoused in the being of Canis Lupis. Loyalty, family-minded, subtlety of dominance and submission, intelligence, perseverance, warrior spirit, sense of property, and a general wish to not be alone in the world... (not always the case with either, but by majority...)

4.) The best way to deal with things like this is simply to sit back, listen to the song, and enjoy it. Whether you're a werewolf fan, or a psychology fan, or even a mixture of the two... just enjoy a fantastic song.

RE: RE: The meaning | Reviewer: G-no | 4/14/09

well, I think this guy's right
sure, the listener can always interpret a song the way he wants it, but the REAL meaning behind a song will always be found at its origins, the writers.
which is in this case metallica (james hetfield to be precise xD:P)
so even if someone else finds that it ''suits'' werewolfs better, TECHNICALLY he would be wrong, because the writers intention was to refer to man's own primal instincts.

re: The Meaning | Reviewer: Anonymous | 3/29/09

i think that the person who posted before me was correct in saying that the song is a metaphor, but it also has a literal interpretation, he says that who ever thinks that the song is about werewolves is listening to the song wrong. well that's where he is wrong because music is for the listener to interpret it how he wants to and if someone wants to think its about werewolves it is and if someone else thinks its about turning back to your instincts than it is. IF anyone's ever read the novella "The Turn of the Screw" then they would understand that any song or book can be interpreted many different ways, and as long as you can back those up with support than your just as right about something than someone else who has a different opinion than you. So i thank we all can thank the person who posed before me for being ignorant

The Meaning | Reviewer: Anonymous | 2/3/09

As with all metallica songs it is a metaphor, its about getting back to your instincts and living life with nature as said in the bit "back to the meaning of life" its not about turning into a werewolf, your not listening to the song right if you think that your taking it to literal and not thinking very deeply about it

Jason | Reviewer: Matt | 12/23/08

This song as a whole was one of the best I have heard. The song has a great beat to it and intense drumming. The solo is amazing and the lyrics fit in perfectly. The parts of the song that I love most though is when Jason goes "Back To The Meaning" and when he howls and you here the echo.Overall it is in my top 10 favorite songs of all-time, easy.Does anyone agree

Most of you are kinda right | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/24/08

Lol druids. Amazing song but yeah it is about natural human instinct, how society truly dehumanizes us and the id crap. It expresses this through werewolves and uses wolves to contrast with humans natural instinct.

Ever been close to a wolf and your "id"? | Reviewer: TC | 10/1/08

We each have a raw, innerbeing that has no respect to laws of man, but, laws of the land and its horrifying realisms. Psychology tells us we all have an "id" that is a behavior where we react to the moment as do some pretadors. We are pretadors by nature, as is the wolf. If you have never slept in the woods and awoke in the morning to understand the mist and how a pretador might interpret that, this lyric captures it, especially for a nocturnal animal/person. But, then, night comes, senses are high and the "hunted have fear in their eyes" especially if they are beyond their comfort. This song touches on that. It is possible to seek the wolf in yourself. I have and its frightening, yet, amazing!! and feel this song incaptures that...
enjoy

Duh | Reviewer: Anonymous | 9/24/08

This song is definitely about werewolves. In fact, I've always believed it was inspired by the White Wolf game system, because it mentions "earth's gift", which is part of the mythology of the Werewolf: The Apocalypse gaming system. Anyway, this is definitely about lycanthropy.

world of warcraft | Reviewer: valkaurn | 9/10/08

this song is about druids!! like the druids in Word of Warcraft!! druids shapeshift...druids are defenders of nature..lolz jk. but the song really does match a druid, i know thats not wat its about tho xD. anywayz, this song is amazing

werewolves or touchy feely lyrics? | Reviewer: Anonymous | 9/10/08

call of the wild
fear in your eyes
it's later than you realized. dude that must mean it has sumpthin to do with werewolves. also the "i feel a change, the hair stands on the back of my neck" that must be a werewolf reference. if its not than it might have sumpthin to do with the "get in touch with your primal instincts" thing. either way amazing lyrics and great song
