Ocean Waves Lyrics - Flyleaf

Review The Song (3)

So many wasted days
Come and go like ocean waves
It hits me like a freight train
And now I can't get off my face

How could I have been so polite to simply let you die
Who am I to spread my fingers after God has filled my hands
Watching the moments slip through like desert sand

Respect her ignorance
Just in case she takes offense
The darkness that's killing her
Well that is just not my concern

How could I have been so polite to simply let her die
Who am I to spread my fingers after you have filled my hands
Watching the moments slip through like desert sand

You're not guaranteed tomorrow
You're not guaranteed tomorrow

How could I have been so polite to simply let you die
Who am I to spread my fingers after he has filled my hands
Watching the moments slip through like desert sand

I think you have are somewhat close to what the meaning of the song is but I think you have missed it in certain points.

First, is the "Who am I to spread my fingers" part is significant because of what comes completely after it. "After you have filled my hands" refers to the gifts and the chances that God gives us to spread his love on the earth.

So it could be paraphrased, as, "How could I have let them die, when you gave me so many chances to tell them about you, that I just let slip away like desert sand."

The second verse "respect her ingnorance. . . offence. . . not my concern" Basically talks about her not wanting to tell her friends about God because she's afraid that they'll take offense or not want to hear what she has to say.

Finally the point is driven home by the bridge, "you're not guaranteed tomorrow"

So in the end the song is saying, don't waste your chances to tell poeple about Jesus, because you're scared or you don't think they'll want to hear it or that they'll take offense, because you're just letting chances slip away and you don't know when the chances will run out.

i would like to take the time to say i am nowhere near being religiuos but Flyleaf has made me interested in it. Will i become cristian some day maybe maybe not. I think that their faith in God is so big that it attracts me. I love their music because of the passion it beholds.

This song i think is more about someone committing suicide and someone is looking at them but not doing anything about it knowing they are thinking about. It says "How could I have been so blind
To simply let them die
Who am I to spread my fingers
After you have filled my hands
Watching the moments slip through like desert sand" and it's as if they wish they could ttake it back.

Another way of viewing this song is by "God's" point of view. I dont know about other people but i think if you see the text through his eyes it could possibly mean; He is sorry for all the horrors he is responsible but he has so much in his hand thanks to us. "After you have filled my hands." and maybe he thinks to himself he isnt worthy of this job because of the line "Who am I to spread my fingers."

Flylea's reason behind the writing of this song is way better then my explanation. I said what i said because of my background because of what i know about Flyeaf.

Oh, this so hits close to home. This song, to me, is about how Christians are supposed to spread the love of Jesus across the planet, but we're too afraid to, because of what they will say. We feel we have to 'respect [their] ignorance, just in case [they] take offense.' We don't say anything because we're scared, but truthfully, we should be more afraid of God, and less afraid of man. If we were to die doing His will, then we will surely gain our place by His side in His kingdom.

It's like everyone being stranded in a desert, and you and a friend wander off to find water. You two go over a hill, and find a large, thirst-quenching oasis along with a full-course banquet set out, yours for the taking. But the others don't know that that's what's beyond the hill, so it's your/our jobs to run back and yell at the tops of our lungs the precious gift we've found.
