Ocean Breathes Salty Lyrics - Modest Mouse

Review The Song (18)

Your body may be gone, I'm gonna carry you in.
In my head, in my heart, in my soul.
And maybe we'll get lucky and we'll both live again.
Well I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. Don't think so.

Well that is that and this is this.
You tell me what you want and I'll tell you what you get.
You get away from me. You get away from me.
Collected my belongings and I left the jail.
Well thanks for the time, I needed to think a spell.
I had to think awhile. I had to think awhile.

The ocean breathes salty, won't you carry it in?
In your head, in your mouth, in your soul.
And maybe we'll get lucky and we'll both grow old.
Well I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I hope so.

Well that is that and this is this.
You tell me what you want and I'll tell you what you get.

You get away from me. (You get away from me) You get away from me.
Collected my belongings and I left the jail.
Well thanks for the time, I needed to think a spell.
I had to think awhile. (I had to think awhile) I had to think awhile.

Well that is that and this is this.
Will you tell me what you saw and I'll tell you what you missed,
when the ocean met the sky. (You missed, you missed)
You missed when time and life shook hands and said goodbye. (You missed)
When the earth folded in on itself. (You missed)
And said "Good luck, for your sake I hope heaven and hell (You missed, you missed)
are really there, but I wouldn't hold my breath." (You missed, you missed)
You wasted life, why wouldn't you waste death? (You missed, you missed)
You wasted life, why wouldn't you waste death?

The ocean breathes salty, won't you carry it in?
In your head, in your mouth, in your soul.
The more we move ahead the more we're stuck in rewind.
Well I don't mind. I don't mind. How the hell could I mind?

Well that is that and this is this.
You tell me what you want and I'll tell you what you get.
You get away from me. (You get away from me) You get away from me.

Well that is that and this is this.
Will you tell me what you saw and I'll tell you what you missed,
when the ocean met the sky. (You missed, you missed)
You wasted life, why wouldn't you waste the afterlife?

Its about people wasting there lives following ancient dogmas. He hopes that heavennis real and that he can be with whomever he is speaking forever, but the cold reality is that there probably isn't life after death and he doesnt want to waste what little time they have.

Hmmm | Reviewer: Angie | 1/14/12

Well in my opinion... I think that this song is about a devilish lover who wasted his time

he finally got out of it and saw what real life was, all life had been wasted once he was free. he still loves them but it just will never ever possibly work. because his lover was a devilish person. who held his heart. wasted his life.

My opinion | Reviewer: Anonymous | 12/27/11

In my opinion it's about a relationship where they have separate views. I might only be saying this because I'm stuck in the exact same situation.

The guy believes in God and lets that govern every decision he makes and while I accept that, he tries to force it upon me but my agnostic mind simply refuses to accept the possibility of just ONE God.

"You tell me what you want and I'll tell you what you get.
You get away from me. You get away from me.
Collected my belongings and I left the jail.
Well thanks for the time, I needed to think a spell.
I had to think awhile. I had to think awhile. "

You tell me that you want to be with someone who shares your views and tell me all these things about God, but I'm going to tell you to get away from me out of this prison cell where you try to force me into an enclosure of structured concepts and beliefs.

"And said "Good luck, for your sake I hope heaven and hell (You missed, you missed)
are really there, but I wouldn't hold my breath." (You missed, you missed)
You wasted life, why wouldn't you waste death? (You missed, you missed)"

You are missing out so much in life living it by rules instead of appreciating it for what it is but for the sake of your beliefs I hope it's all true, that there's a heaven and there's a hell, good luck to you.

"The more we move ahead the more we're stuck in rewind."

Round and round we go...

To me, this song is about Isaac is telling someone that he feels that his friend has wasted life. Possibly because his friend has been too obsessed with religion and the afterlife to enjoy the real world. The lines
"And maybe we'll get lucky and we'll both live again.
Well I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. Don't think so."
and
"And maybe we'll get lucky and we'll both grow old.
Well I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I hope so."
Show that he does not know about the afterlife, but knows that you can do something about this life. By saying he hopes they grow old, but merely does not know about the after life shows that he feels you can only focus on this life because it is at least a certainty.

The lines
"Collected my belongings and I left the jail.
Well thanks for the time, I needed to think a spell. "
Are designed to show that bad things in life are not that big of a deal. In the same spirit as float on, he is saying that 'yeah I went to jail, but big deal. At least I had fun unlike you."

The Lines
"Will you tell me what you saw and I'll tell you what you missed,
when the ocean met the sky. (You missed, you missed)
You missed when time and life shook hands and said goodbye. (You missed)
When the earth folded in on itself. (You missed)"
simply serve to accent the idea that his friend has been missing life while worrying about death. Isaac shows that by telling the friend all the amazing wonders that he missed.

Finally, the main point of the song is reached in the line
"You wasted life, why wouldn't you waste death?"
Isaac is saying 'Great, you made it to heaven, (assuming that there is a heaven which Isaac does not believe in) but what good is it since you still don't know how to have fun or enjoy yourself.

To bungholio: It comes off as petty when you insult someone's grammar and act obtuse because you have some trouble accepting that someone else has beliefs. Just an observation by an objective third party.

The Song's Meaning (According to Me) | Reviewer: Brendan | 5/29/11

I'm not too sure, but I think that if there was one word to sum up the meaning of this song, it would be:
Agnostic

"And maybe we'll get lucky and we'll both live again.
Well I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. Don't think so."
It sounds like to me he's hoping that there's an Afterlife but he doesn't think that there is one.

"Well that is that and this is this.
Will you tell me what you saw and I'll tell you what you missed,"
To me, this is spoken to the strong believers/worshippers of Christ and the Afterlife. He's saying show me proof of there being an Afterlife and I'll correct you on it (or something else).

"...for your sake I hope heaven and hell (You missed, you missed)
are really there, but I wouldn't hold my breathe."
Somewhat self-explanatory.

"You wasted life, why wouldn't you waste the afterlife?"
He's saying you wasted life trying to get into Heaven so, "why don't you waste the Afterlife."

So, that's what I think the meaning is. If you have similar thoughts about it, then you can change and rephrase it. I'm only getting my ideas out here. ;p

mushrooms | Reviewer: ali | 4/21/11

the last part of my trip, the earth colapsed in on me. and i was shot out into a start.
then i was back in my body, more sober than i had been.
when he says wasted life, to me, it means that i died. "time and life shook hands and said goodbye" meaning they could exist seperately.
i may sounds crazy, but i beleive in other dimentions.
cause that dimention was that, and this dimention is this.
and for my sake i hope there is a heaven and hell, and for my sake i hope there are a heaven and hell.
when everything folds in on itself the ocean meets the sky, but i wasted life so i dont get a chance at the afterlife.
i dont remember much else, and thats why he says, "tell me what u say and ill tell you what you missed"
mushrooms, are suicide if ur not carefull, i suppose.
but then again, i could just be crazy. i heard this song before that and it didnt mean much, i liked it, but now i feel like i understand it.

You wasted life, why wouldn't you waste death? | Reviewer: Anonymous | 4/14/11

I'm pretty sure this song is about suicide, or more specifically, Isaac's anger at someone (probably a friend) who has committed suicide. His friend has missed out on life, and has met some kind of end, and Isaac is saying that he hopes for his friend's sake that there is an afterlife. The problem, however, is that Isaac believes that his friend will waste eternity just as he wasted life.
Also: what's with the Jesus comment? Isaac Brock is an atheist; this is pretty obvious in his music.

What I think this song is about | Reviewer: Farber | 11/18/10

I think Isaac wrote this song about a girl he was once with and longs to be with her. He knows she feels the same but that is that and this is this. His "jail" is a different girl he was with that made him realize what he had with the first girl. We'll both live again I think refers to both he and this girl being fully happy again. Same with we'll both grow old. The rest of the song I believe he is speaking of himself. And maybe a little about how the timing with the girl he longs for was just at the wrong time in his life. that's my two cents :)

The name of the version you are thinking of is named "The ocean breeze is sally" I don't know what record it's on, but you can find it, I found it on Limewire, although I hate using it because if you ask me Modest Mouse deserves alot more than the $0.99 that you pay for a song.

Epic/I have a live version (in response to jason) | Reviewer: Erik Klerf | 7/29/09

Jason, I think I know exactly what you are talking about. I have a live version which has different lyrics.

And this is such a beautifully amazing song..so inspiring. But then again, isn't the vast majority of Modest Mouse as such?

anyone have a live version | Reviewer: jason | 1/15/09

i once had a live version of this song that was even more amazing than this. Issac let his emotion flow more in the live version and some of the lyrics are actually changed up a bit. if anyone has any info about that version please let me know

Best song i have heard in a while! | Reviewer: 10 year old fan | 8/16/08

Very impressive, probably one of the best bands the planet has seen, heard, and researched. A band such as Modest Mouse only comes around once in a life time, you should count yourself lucky as to ever listen to this incredible band.
