Review about Nutshell music | Reviewer: Anonymous | 9/15/09
well, being rational, music doesn't cause much of anything. maybe an emotional response, but each response is an individuals view of house the music affected him/her.
and the whole part about feeling better dead only means he would rather be dead than controlled. but that doesn't mean he'd go out and kill himself because someone was controlling him. soooo....
I like the song, and admire the music capabilities of the band. don't judge the music because it isn't at fault.

This song is a very strong way of explaining how LAYNE felt and how even as loved as his music was, he did not feel himself. The lyrics are beautiful and Layne's voice in this song is absolutly chilling. For anybody to place blame on Layne's struggles and addictions for their own misfortune has NO IDEA what it's like to be under and alone. Many times I want to thank Layne Stanley for giving me a song that related to my own issues to guide me. Without some of these lyrics I do not think I would have ever over come the addiction. I am sorry for your loss, Irritated, But I have had an opposite effect from the song and if I did not have these songs to listen to when I was alone I seriously do not think I would've had the strength to realize that I was not alone all this time.

“…I said that the song encouraged the action. I never said that it caused the action…”
Encouraged - urge somebody to do something: to motivate somebody to take a course of action or continue doing something.
Caused - what makes something happen: a person or thing that makes something happen or exist or is responsible for something that happens.
You’re basically saying the same thing. For example, if I encourage someone to play in traffic, that’s going to be the cause when they ultimately get hit.
It’s ridiculous to blame and/or hate this song for something your cousin did to himself. I’m sorry for your family’s loss and all but the artist has NO responsibility over the emotional state of their listener, nor what said listener does while their song is playing. Listening to a depressing song doesn’t lead to suicide; I love this song and I couldn’t be happier.
If we’re going to play the let's-blame-the-music-game for the actions of the listener then let’s start with rap music, shall we? Gang violence. Gunshots. Gang banging ho’s. Now let’s analyze this logically. Does rap encourage or cause all the murders or rapes in the world?. No. Can we blame Techno for every person that’s dropping Acid right now? No. Just like we can't blame every alternative/metal/whatever-genre-you-want-to-call-it song that mentions depression as the cause of a suicide.
There are far more depressing songs out there than “Nutshell“ -- “Gloomy Sunday” (also called the Hungarian Suicide Song) for one, just about every country song known to man for two, and there are even classical pieces I listen to that ooze depression but they‘ve never driven me or any of my friends (who listen to the same stuff) to suicide; if anything it's helped us through a period of depression. Had he been listening to anything other than a grungy Seattle metal band’s song, I doubt we’d even be having this discussion. People don't normally off themselves to shit like "Lady Humps" though so here we sit...
The fact of the matter remains, the only person responsible for your cousins death is your cousin.
Hasn’t the metal world been through this enough with Ozzy and Judas Priest already???

If you can understand correctly i said that the song encouraged the action.I never said that it caused the action. So you should read closer and comprehend before you comment. My cousin did try to get help but the hospital turned him down. How DARE you judge him when you never knew him. Also how dare you blame my family!Think before you speak. Didn't anyone ever teach you that?
This is a great song. | Reviewer: Anonymous | 8/15/09
Great song.........Great band.. Always saddens me to think of the Great talent we lost all so close to each other....Layne, Bradley,Kurt and Hoon. Imagine if they had lived where the music would have gone..I'm sure we wouldn't have the crap we have today..
BTW don't blame the song..Blame your family maybe you all should have seen what was coming .

Well I think your going a little too far on that bud if your cus offed him self IT was NOT because of the song... I swear.. He committed suicide because there was something WRONG with the man.. There a meds for that kind of shit... so Fuck You on hating on a awesome Song that has gotten me through some really hard times in my life!
A song to be hated forever | Reviewer: Anonymous | 7/28/09
I think this is a horrid song when i look at the lyrics. My cousin was listening to this song when he committed suicide 2 days ago at the young age of 21. I believe this song brings no hope and only encourages death and sorrow for an individual. I believe he was feeling what the song was saying and the song says that they would be better off dead. This song clearly made an immpression on him, but not a positive immpression. This song will be hated by my family forever.
I'd feel better dead | Reviewer: Ben | 5/19/09
This is the most powerful song I've ever heard. The lyrics are incredibly deep and full of sorrow. Whenever I hear this song it makes me think of all the mistakes I've made, and how many times I feel being dead would be better.

my gift of self is raped | Reviewer: a grateful recovering addict | 4/14/09
it brings tears to my eyes whenever i hear this song, in one way or another we can all relate to great music no matter who sings it. i saw an interview with layne and the rest of AIC and they asked him what do ur song lyrics mean (or somethin along those lines) he simply replies "whatever u want them to mean." thats what a great artist can do it may mean one thing for somebody and somethin totally different for another person, its all a point of view. for me i saw my bottom comin up real fast and luckily enough i was able to get away from that part of my life after 13 years of use and abuse. not everyone is as lucky as me, alot of people lose the fight and too many of our most talented and gifted die too young. R.I.P. Layne u r lost but never forgotten.
