Not Ready To Make Nice Lyrics - Dixie Chicks

Review The Song (29)

Forgive, sounds good
Forget, I’m not sure I could
They say time heals everything
But I’m still waiting

I’m through with doubt
There’s nothing left for me to figure out
I’ve paid a price
And I’ll keep paying

I’m not ready to make nice
I’m not ready to back down
I’m still mad as hell and
I don’t have time to go round and round and round
It’s too late to make it right
I probably wouldn’t if I could
‘Cause I’m mad as hell
Can’t bring myself to do what it is you think I should

I know you said
Can’t you just get over it
It turned my whole world around
And I kind of like it

I made my bed and I sleep like a baby
With no regrets and I don’t mind sayin’
It’s a sad sad story when a mother will teach her
Daughter that she ought to hate a perfect stranger
And how in the world can the words that I said
Send somebody so over the edge
That they’d write me a letter
Sayin’ that I better shut up and sing
Or my life will be over

I’m not ready to make nice
I’m not ready to back down
I’m still mad as hell and
I don’t have time to go round and round and round
It’s too late to make it right
I probably wouldn’t if I could
‘Cause I’m mad as hell
Can’t bring myself to do what it is you think I should

I’m not ready to make nice
I’m not ready to back down
I’m still mad as hell and
I don’t have time to go round and round and round
It’s too late to make it right
I probably wouldn’t if I could
‘Cause I’m mad as hell
Can’t bring myself to do what it is you think I should
What it is you think I should

Forgive, sounds good
Forget, I’m not sure I could
They say time heals everything
But I’m still waiting

It was an insult to our troops when the country that they were fighting for was called stupid they're a great band true but that doesn't excuse what they said
if they think America is stupid then why do they live here
if they believe that then they shouldn't be here and it hurt a lot of soldiers to hear them say that I should know my dad was in the military at the time
so don't go saying they didn't do anything wrong because they did

What Is Wrong with You People | Reviewer: Isabel | 6/30/11

Seriously grow up. Don't you have better things to do than sitting around, commenting on a song you hate? Why are even searching around for something your strongly against? And Eric,I guess you couldn't resist ruining everyone's day, by posting rude things about their favorite band.(To anyone) The Dixie Chicks did nothing wrong. What, just because their famous means they don't get an opintion? "Shut up and sing" huh? Well shut up and use ur head. They didn't say they hated the troops! They said they didn't like Bush. The troops fight for our country, our FREEDOM OF SPEECH. So don't lash out at the chicks until you get a good look at yourself. Would you burn some lady's stuff just cause you heard her say she didn't like Obama? No, of course not. I would be just as angry if someone, sratch that, almost everyone in America, tried to ruin my life just 'cause I expressed my opintion. The Dixie Chicks aren't here "just to enertain us", and they have every right to put their heart and soul into their music. This song is art and someone's feelings so stop trashing it.

You Go Girls!

Lighten up Eric | Reviewer: Rachel | 11/19/10

It's funny how you (Eric) will go on and on complaining about others going on and on about being ok with what Natalie Maines said. I would just like to point out to those small minded individuals such as yourself that there is a HUGE difference between not liking what the president has done or said and not supporting the troops. I myself did not like George W. nor did I agree with his rash decision to jump into a war (and yes I was from day 1 on Natalie's bandwagon after saying what she did), but I 100% support the men and women that fight and die for our country. It's naive individuals like yourself that distorted what Natalie said and made it such a huge deal when it did not need to be. Oh and by the way, it's also naive individuals such as yourself that helped give a quick boost of sales of their cd's when you all ran out and bought their music just so you could burn it. I will continue to buy both their cd's and concert tickets as I have in the past because I still see their talent as amazing.

Vindication Schmindication! | Reviewer: Eric | 6/18/10

This has to be the most overrated song in the history of music. I really don’t understand all the raves and accolades for this song, why everybody is saying “Oh, it's SO well-written”, and talking about it like it’s some kind of masterpiece. When the Dixie Chicks won all those Grammys for this stupid song, well, that made ME mad as hell! This was not just a slap in the face of President Bush, it was a slap in the faces of all our brave men and women who are fighting a just war and risking their very lives so that all Americans can live in safety and freedom and help preserve the very right to free speech the Dixie Chicks claim to advocate! What were those judges thinking? (My guess is there must have been some bigshot Hollywood liberals among them, probably Streisand, Sarandon and Robbins!) And no, I was not amused when Natalie Maines quipped, "Hurry before they turn us off!"

Here’s what doesn’t add up for me. First, they open those Texas-size mouths and publicly insult President Bush for the whole world (including our enemies) to hear and very deservedly and justifiably get boycotted and blacklisted from the radio, lose millions in concert attendance, get banned from the CMA Awards, and incite numerous destruction parties of Dixie Chicks CDs—which is what they’re REALLY mad as hell about. Then they cry “victim” and write a song lamely defending their actions and making no apologies, and now they’re heroes? Give me a freakin’ break!

I also fail to see what right they have to lecture their detractors about free speech after Martie Maguire rudely commented, and I quote: “I’d rather have a small following of really cool people who get it…than people that have us in their five-disc changer with Reba McEntire and Toby Keith. We don’t need those kinds of fans.” In other words, “If you like who we don’t like, you’re not COOL like US. We're always right and we can say whatever we want, and if you don’t agree with us, you can go to hell!” Well, FINE, we don’t need them either! HYPOCRITES! If they think they have a right to dictate to their audience who they can and cannot like, well, so much for free speech!

Furthermore, the whole issue behind the controversy is not and never was about free speech! No one was denying their right to free speech; even President Bush himself said they are free to believe what they want. The real issue was twofold. First of all, what Natalie Maines said was exactly the wrong thing to say at a time when our troops were preparing for the War on Terror, AND she said it ON FOREIGN SOIL! This was a classic case of how one can MISUSE free speech! And second of all, the way they interpret “shut up and sing” completely misses the point. It does NOT mean they don’t have a right to free speech or to their opinion. What it DOES mean is that when people pay their good hard-earned money to see you perform in concert, they come to hear you sing, NOT to listen to you spout your inflammatory political opinions! Besides, they didn’t come up with “shut up and sing” on their own, they copped that from Laura Ingraham!

I wouldn’t say that what they did was unforgivable, but I would definitely say it was inexcusable! This song does not and cannot make up for the colossal and egregious disservice they have done to this country. They are NOT brave, they are NOT heroes, and they are NOT VINDICATED! All this song has really done is show them for what they really are—proud, arrogant, rebellious, cowardly, immature, defiant and stubborn! And that “FUTK” shirt…they thought nobody would get it. EVERYBODY GOT IT! Do they take us for FOOLS?!

Chicks, maybe what you said shouldn’t have prompted anybody to go “over the edge” as you put it, but face it, you have only yourselves to blame! Loose lips really do sink ships, and you put yourselves right aboard the Titanic! Besides, you’re pretty “over the edge” yourselves. As my father (God Bless his soul) would say, you’re so far to the left you’re going to fall off the earth! So you’re ashamed that George Bush is from Texas, are you? Well, quite frankly, I’m ashamed to call you Americans. And if you sleep like a baby with no regrets after all the harm you’ve done, then I say you have NO CONSCIENCE! Obviously, this whole experience has done nothing to humble your Texas-size egos!

Getting back to Reba, I loved it when she said at the CMA awards, “Hey, if the Dixie Chicks can sing with their foot in their mouths, I can host this show!”

Perfect song in every way | Reviewer: Anonymous | 6/17/09

this is so much of a good song and not a single word in this song is not perfect. thy r telling everyone that thy still believe in wht thy said and still love the country but to forget wht bush did is impossible and even more impossible is wht was said and sent to thm. the ppl who did that should be ashamed of themselves b/c thy were speaking their opinion which is wht makes this country so beautiful that we can do that and yet thy were threatned by ppl who didnt see both sides. great song and maybe i could even say that this song has the most meaning of a song written by an artist. so perfect in case i havnt said that lol :)

Love This Song! | Reviewer: pnkrkrhotti | 7/31/08

I think that personal experiences is a great way to express oneself AND to create a connection with the artist's listening audience. This song creates a bond with the person listening that has gone through what is being sung. This is my song for when I'm feeling hurt, it cheers me up when I sing it.

Mixed emotion | Reviewer: Dana | 4/2/08

I think that everyone has there own political views & are entitled to them. However i don't think actresses, actors, singer etc should use there fame as
a way to express them. I think they should shut up & sing, act or whatever it is they do to entertain us. Keep it to themselves like most of us in this wonderful country! Have a wonderful day!

Hypocrite,Who Me? | Reviewer: Tobee | 12/31/07

I was mad as hell when this was said and after this song I was able to think. My years in Viet Nam and then I realized what a Hypocrite I was.Cause see. I too did not give a hoot what I said and as I got older I had forgot that. My generation started realizing the meaning of my reason for fighting in Nam to protect the rights of others to speak their Constitutional Freedoms "Free Speech" Her right to say what she felt and not having to apologizing for it. A Dixie Chicks Fan once more!
