The two guitar solos are among the best I've ever heard. Page's tone and phrasing on the solos are fabulous. That was one of my favorite harp solos as well. The riffs, the lyrics. Of course it was originally an African-American church spiritual of unknown date that was modified to make it secular. Why did Plant and Page take out the reference to the Devil in their acoustic album "No Quarter". It reminds me of the Rolling Stones song "I Just Want To See His Face"-not in the sense of harmony and form but the oldness of the song itself being reinterpreted by Englishmen. It is amazing how that (my) English generation was able to reinterpret the blues into supersonic energy. No one was better than Jimmi Hendrix, in my opinion, who backed up so many of the artists that the English kids listed to as rock and roll was being created. He took it to a whole new level. The way I read it the song is about marijuana addiction. Devil told me to roll - could be about rolling a joint, especially since it's sometimes called a log. Brother showed me the gong - it's a stretch but it could be an intentionally obscured reference to "bong". Obscured to avoid hassles with UK decency laws? Monkey on my back - could be about addiction. But if I'm wrong - well it's nobody's fault by mine...
