This sets the bar for the current decade, and No Phone is not only the best CAKE yet - it has already been allocated a place in rock Valhalla, where McCrea will undeniably sit at the right hand of Fee Waybill. I can honestly say that the anxiety to hear it is not diminished upon the 50th listen - and I only bought the album yesterday. It is a FLAWLESS work of art, the production so meticulous, so impossibly perfect that as a fan, I wonder what the band could possibly do to top it, and fear for its future. As always, McCrea's phrasing is exquisite, and the song would have been great had it only included his vocals and the intro guitar line. But listen carefully how the instruments are layered. The "bright" guitar sequence, the "flat" chromatic piano, the signature mariachi horns in funeral dirge mode, the sequencer, the vocal "bridge" - all render the piece immortal, but there is more. Notice the way the "peak note" of the horns is displaced in favor of McCrea's next verse - seamless - leaving the listener with a visceral ache. It's enough to make you wonder if McCrea spent time at "the crossroads" and maybe you should stop listening. Who can fathom the designs of his muse? Looking across genres, and back forty years, I cannot think of 5 pieces of music which I'd rather spend eternity watching a variety of ethnically vague ecdysiasts ply their trade to than No Phone.
