I was listening to these lyrics on my way home today. It was raining and the day was incredibly sad. These lyrics made so much sense to me today that I just kept hitting the back button my on my car sterio, listening again and again to Jack Johnson's calming voice. I have been struggling recently to understand where my boyfriend's head is. We've been dating now for a couple of months and things have not been very smooth for a couple of weeks. We dated in the past and took a break for awhile. We got back together because he promised things would be different, but now I really am beginning to realize that nothing is ever going to change him. The words, "it hurts when I think/my thoughts aren't at peace/with the plans that we make/chances we take" I caught my breathe when I first heard these lines. A song is a totally personal thing, I couldn't have been more emotional hit with the meaning of this song than today. I took a chance with him and it feels like he's just going to hurt me again. I wish I knew the answers, the right words to say to him to make him understand that we can't keep going on like this. Depending on the situation that they are either currently in, or have experienced in the past directly effects how this song is meaningful to any different person. Also, for a song to be meaningful you do not have to take the ENTIRE song line by line and discard the song just because a couple lines do not fit excatly someway into your life. For me the first verse and the refrain have the most meaning. I am currently trying to establish a meaningful relationship with a young woman and her "mind is a mess" in the sense that she is worried about whether I would treat her right or not. "So is mine" because "it hurts when I think" about her being worried concerning my ability to treat her right. The "words that we said" and "the words that we mean" is applicable to my situation because all we have right now is verbal communication, I rarely see her because I'm at a differnt college. Right now, "words can fall short" in the sense thatwe are only basing what we know off each other by the way we talk, not the way we act and talk.
