No Leaf Clover Lyrics - Metallica

Review The Song (45)

And it feels right this time
On his crash course with the big time
Pay no mind to the distant thunder
New day fills his head with wonder, boy

Says it feels right this time
Turned it 'round and found the right line
"Good day to be alive, sir
Good day to be alive," he says

Then it comes to be that the soothing light at the end of your tunnel
Was just a freight train coming your way
Then it comes to be that the soothing light at the end of your tunnel
Was just a freight train coming your way

Don't it feel right like this?
All the pieces fall to his wish
"Sucker for that quick reward, boy
Sucker for that quick reward," they say

It's coming your way

Was just a freight train coming your way

Then it comes to be
Then it comes to be

I guess this song about somebody similar to Keruak's charakters, like beatniks. In my opinion, "no leafs clover" means "pure luck" without leafs, when you get up and you don't know what is in front of you. You just say “Good day to be alive" and you look forward just for a new day. You hitch-hike first any vehicle what take you and "go away" from “Sucking up for that quick (social) reward".

if you look at the title of the song... No leaf clover... 4 leaf clovers are considered lucky.. no leaf clover seems to be unlucky.. i think has to do with shitty luck. Whatever the true meaning is this is one of my favourite songs

Love This Song | Reviewer: New Jersey Metal Mom | 1/6/13

The song is about watching your ass and who you trust. Sometimes what seems to be a soothing light or someone reaching out to help can be your worst enemy. I don't look for the light at the end of the tunnel anymore I look withing for strength because that is all I can rely on. ME!

drugs | Reviewer: drew | 5/7/12

this song is about being addicted to some form of mainline drug
if you listen to the lyrics u dont have to try hard to figure it out
suck up for that quick reward- mainlining a drug meens needles and they hurt but you feel it faster
the light at the tunnel is talking about quiting- the withdrawls will make you want more and then you want more

unlucky bastard | Reviewer: mick | 4/14/12

To me,the song tells of a guy who is having the best luck ever at whatever he is chasing, everything is falling into place. He is obviously caught up in the moment,so much so he does'nt here the "distant thunder" which is a reference to a coming danger, and the light at the end of the tunnel has always been a sign of hope."No leaf clover" means absolutely no luck at all.So whatever this guy thinks is great for him has or will turn out to be "the freight train"coming his way...you can't stop a freight train. So this guy who thinks he has the world by the balls is about to find out he is an unlucky bastard when he meets his demise, and realizes he actually never had any chance.

the song is obviously talking about god, you idiots, and how when you hear the thunder it's judgement day and the light you thought was him was really just your apocalypse coming to consume you... sigh... retards"

Retard? Oh please... Everybody are allowed to have their own point of view. If you interpret the song like it's about God then so be it. If there are one retard here, then it's you! *sigh*
And I'm not an english-speaking person so have a indulgence about my grammar... hehhh

First to apologize for my bad english. This song is awesome, masterpiece. My interpretation is:
Soldier in Afgan, Irak every day thinks that will survive, and does not pay attention on enemy, he feels good than he gets hit by bullet and all his wishes failed.  He feels no good anymore and other soldiers telling him to suck up the gun and pull triger like reward He is in adrenaline rush and he see hope for his life like light on the end of tunel but it is not hope, no life, no healing, it is death.
I don't know are You been in the Army but in my country oficers speaking with soldiers with BOY and we must say to them SIR
Think about this
Luck is in 4 leaf clover, maybe less luck in 3 leaf but here is NO LEAF CLOVER that means he never be lucky. Just bad luck.
One more time I apologize for my bad englesh
Thank You
Greetings from Serbia

No Lead Clover--RELIGIOUS VIEW | Reviewer: mustafa | 6/13/11

I THINK THIS SONGS DESCRIBES A LIFE OF A MAN WHO GOT SO INDULGED IN THE MATERIALISTIC PART OF LIFE, TRYING HARD TIME AFTER TIME TO GET IT RIGHT, BUT HE WASN'T ABLE TO GET THE BIG PICTURE HE WASN'T SURE IF THERE'S ONE. THEREFORE, HE WASN'T ABLE TO SET LONG TERM GOALS THAT WILL MOSTLY PAY OFF GREAT BUT WILL TAKE TIME & PATIENCE. SO HE DECIDED TO PURSUE HIS DREAMS & FULFILL HIS DESIRES BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY & HE PUT ASIDE ETHICS/RELIGION. SUDDENLY HE FELT THAT HE HAVE LOST A LOT OF PRESSURE THAT WEIGHTED HIM DOWN FOR A LONG TIME. FEELING GREAT & TOTALLY IGNORING HIS INNER VOICES THAT WAS TRYING TO WARN HIM OF THE INEVITABLE TRUTH, HE BEGAN HIS QUICK JOURNEY TO "SUCCESS", BEING HAPPY WITH QUICK INNER & OUTER REWARDS THAT HE GOT ONE AFTER ANOTHER TILL HIS LIFE ENDS & HE MEETS DEATH COMING SUDDENLY & UNEXPECTED

No Leaf Clover | Reviewer: Zach | 10/10/09

First of all, i wanna start out by saying that this is an awesome song (what i think is one of the best of Metallica's many great songs). It's a song i love listening to because of the cool lyrics and awesome blend of metal and orchestra.

Now here's what i think the meaning of the song is:
The title, of course, plays with the "four leaf clover" belief of good luck. The story is of a guy who is starting out with whatever goal he has in mind, and getting good luck with it. The distant thunder (maybe a forewarning of something unfortunate?) is ignored because of how things seem like they can't go wrong, as each new day passes by with no problem. Things feel right, and they get turned around for the better advantage of the outcome -- when this happens it seems like more of a good day to be alive than usual.

The soothing light at the end of the tunnel is like what you see when your heading toward your goal... but then, it turns out to be a freight train, symbolizing something that is a problem, something that could crush your dreams.

Before you realize this, things still feel right, as all the pieces fall into place. Eventually you become a sucker for a quick reward, however, and may take things for advantage.

That train will come your way, if you're not careful about how you approach your dreams...

So, there it is. That's my interpretation. Hope you like it.

Once again, this is an AWESOME song.

God Bless

Still damn good | Reviewer: Not Irish | 7/6/09

I understand what everyone says when they say this song is about not seeing whats in front of you and good luck/bad luck...but to be honest, to ME it reminded me of history. You know back when America was just comig out of the "wild west" era, trains started to be made. And immigration was big. One of the many different peoples that came here were irish. It is documented that immigrants could get no other work than building the railroad tracks. So, that in mind, this song makes me think of a young irish boy working all day on train tracks and daydreaming of getting out of that job and hitting it big, and he sees "the soothing lihgt at the end of the tunnel" but then it justs ends up being "the freight train...". It could be the freight train two ways: both 1)literally the train, or 2) his daydream ends up with him working on the train tracks anyway at the end. Thanks for reading this. Hope it wasnt too far out there.

Simply amazing, just add orchestra. | Reviewer: The Irish Redneck | 6/21/09

Whether the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra is there or not, Metallica still bashes the brains out of our skulls. But some songs aren't complete without the orchestra. "No Leaf Clover" is one of them. I personally dislike orchestra music unless it's in a movie and it sounds good, e.g. the 007 movies. Now I have another reason not to dislike them by listening to this song and the many others.

Many- no, all of the songs in S&M were bettered with the addition of the SFSO. "The Call of Ktulu," (Might I add, there's an incorrection on the CD cover, where it says "The Call of the Ktulu) is one of them. There's also "Of Wolf and Man," "Master of Puppets," and "The Thing That Should Not Be." But I'm getting off track. Back to "No Leaf Clover."

The song is a play on, not commenting the song, but the title. It plays on with a four leaf clover, where the boy is facing a life of good luck, and then the complication, "Then it comes to be that the soothing light at the end of your tunnel, was just a freight train coming your way..." I love the lyrics, I love the guitar, I love it all. Especially the SFSO introduction. I'm glad that this song is seen on Guitar Hero: Metallica, it would have been very incomplete without it. 5*
