The year 2006 began with good news for Nightwish: Their "Highest Hopes" Best-Of compilation had not only crossed the Finnish Double Platinum mark of 60,000 sold copies, it was also Finland's best-selling album of 2005, having sold more than 65,000 times. With the media frenzy finally slowing down, the band members found time to concentrate on the important things again. Tuomas had already written the majority of the new songs, Emppu recorded some new tunes with the Finnish hard rock band Brother Firetribe, Marco returned to the Tarot camp to record the eagerly awaited album "Crows Fly Black" and Jukka had his own business projects going on.

In March, Nightwish brought home two prizes from the Emma Gaala. The band was awarded an Emma as "Best Finnish Artist 2005" and one for "Most Sold Album 2005". In the same month, the band officially started to look for a new vocalist through an open call for auditions on their website. In April, the Finnish music video awards, the Muuvi, brought more happy news to Nightwish. The jury awarded the band a Silver Muuvi for their "Sleeping Sun" video, shot in 2005. The video also made it to the second place in the public voting. May finally brought two long-expected releases. The Nightwish book, written by Mape Ollila, was released in Finland. Shortly after, Nightwish's second full-length live DVD "End Of An Era" was released and reached gold status in Finland after just one day. It was later certified gold in Germany and France as well. In the following weeks, the band retreated to their summer camp to rehearse the new songs and have a good summer. Meanwhile, the media kept themselves busy with unending speculations about the new singer.

In September, Nightwish went to the studio to begin recording the next album.

The auditions for the position as new lead singer ended in mid-January. All in all, the band had received and listened to more than 2,000 demos from singers from all over the world. Exciting news that was followed by the announcement of the first new live shows, scheduled to happen in the USA and Canada in October and November.

On May 24th, all speculating and waiting was put to an end when Nightwish introduced their new lead singer, Anette Olzon. Within minutes, the news was all over websites and news stations around the world. One day later, the first single "Eva" was released as an internet-only single. The single's entire revenue was donated to a children's charity.

In June, the band went to Los Angeles to shoot two videos for their upcoming singles "Amaranth" and "Bye Bye Beautiful". Both were directed by the renown Finnish director Antti Jokinen, who had already worked with Nightwish for their "Nemo" video. "Amaranth" was released in August and sold gold in just two days in Finland. It made good charts positions all across Europe and went straight to the top of the single charts in Finland, Hungary and Spain.

The new album "Dark Passion Play" was released in late September and had a very successful start all across the world. It was awarded double platinum in Finland after just two days and received four more gold awards so far. The album entered the charts at the top position in several countries. The world tour is booked, first shows already sold out, the new era has begun...

hmmm.... | Reviewer: Mel287 | 10/27/09

I have to say this:i think xeon256 is completely right.I also have to say this to all those people who keep blaming Annette for the sacking of Tarja:You are wrong.Whatever reasons she was fired for are completely separate from Annette.Yes,Annette is no Tarja, but don't you think that NW would rather hire someone who sounded completely different from Tarja-to get away from that era?I do,however, think it is great that Marco's vocal talents are getting the attention they deserve. While i agree that Tarja's voice is brilliant, and i prefer her's over Annette's,NW with any line-up is still great!

ok my views on this..... | Reviewer: xeon256 | 10/17/09

I love both the Tarja Nightwish, and the Anette Nightwish. Personally I like Tarja's vocals best, she brought a wonderful opera voice to a amazing rock sound, it was a beautiful balance. Now Anette brings a different approach to the table, similar to Lacuna coil. Tarja isnt better than Anette, nor is Anette better than Tarja. Both are great singers in their own right, but in the case of Nightwish Tarja I think is a better match. food for thought, the combined vocals of Anette, and Tarja, might sound pretty good, add Cristina Scabbia, I think the trio would sound really good....but thats just me.

People come on. | Reviewer: Kyle Koch | 10/15/09

Listen up people,
ofcourse nightwish now has a new style, the main thing in a song (Vocals) are done by another person.
I think you're beeing a little harsh saying Anette is that bad. If you would actually LISTEN to the songs instead of comparing her and Tarja, you would still say it's good music.
I'll have to admit that it doesn't sounds like Goth-metal anymore, but I don't think that's a bad thing.
The new album (wich I find best of all) is a little more ... celtic I think. Full of adventures.

Every band comes to an end someday, we should be happy that Tarja is replaced and Nightwish lives on!!.

New Nightwish sucks! | Reviewer: Anonymous | 8/29/09

This is coming from a former fan of this band. What the hell happened???? They replaced Tarja with some pop bitch who can't even sing her own songs?!?!? Those guys are crazy for thinking they could replace an amazing singer like Tarja with the crappiness of Anette who sounds like a dead cow singing Avril Lavigne.

Also, the music sounds like dumbed down Evanescence/Lacuna Coil type music as opposed to Power Metal. It's hilarious to think that this band is Power Metal anymore, and people still label them that?!?! Power Metal is suppost to have leads, good keyboard work, and ESPECIALLY good vocals. Nightwish has none of that anymore. Instead, money seems to be more important than the music to them nowadays.

Oh, and I heard that Anette is starting a solo career too! Well good for her! Maybe she can finally take all of her pop fans with her and hopefully Nightwish can get back to basics. I really hope Nightwish reads what their old fans are saying because this band has become no more than a sorry excuse of a band that used to produce good music.

Listen to their albums of the past and see the TRUE power of this band, not any of this new pop-rock bullshit!

so different than before........... | Reviewer: anonymous | 8/15/09

TARJA was something different...special!And of course i thing that she can't be replaced!I heard Dark Passion Play but i did it only for the band!Anette lokes like a cat in front of TARJA,but i believe that the new songs are written for her!Because she cant sing the ones before! She dont have the voice that you have to have to do that!Andi also think that NIGHTWISH changed completelly their music styl.THAT'S POP only the type of the lyrics is almost the same!WHY????????!!!!Of course MY WINTER STORM IS super!!!1

..... | Reviewer: Avette | 7/20/09

Nightwish will NEVER be the same without Tarja Turunen. I state that definitively. It is a fact. Tarja's operatice voice and her ability to come through even the most elaborate instrumentation was stunning, and part of what made me think, "Hey, Nightwish is a band I'll be following for the rest of its and my natural life!" I happen to have liked the old one, and honestly, Annette's voice reminds me too much of... well, everyone elses'. It's not that she's not a good singer... yea-ah, no, she's not a good singer. Not for Nightwish anyway. She probably has a very profitable future in pop, but... well, Tarja kinda made the band. (Okay, so maybe Marco would've been a good lead singer, or perhaps the man who sang in "Creek Mary's Blood"-his name escapes me. God, those two...) And no, I'm not just a fan of Tarja. I'm a fan of THE OLD NIGHTWISH! They got a hell of a lot less heavy when Annette came to the stage, and their songs have less, well, substance. They sound like any other femme-fronted metal wannabes. Seriously. Tarja took some of Nightwish's atmosphere with her, that is undeniable.

And kepalajamuran: Annette would never cut it as a warrior. Annette's a pop angel who's stickin' with Nightwish till they can't pay her paycheck anymore.

not agreeing with most | Reviewer: empiremica | 6/27/09

i disagree with most i read here... i think tarja was not replaceable with anyone..she was totally amazing ...and still is..what a voice she has and her stage presence totally made nightwish a band that i think was the most refreshing and awsome band to come along since the beatles. i think with tarja leaving they will have missed being one of the best bands in the world.it was just the magic and the right combination.a combination that just happens out of nature. what a sad shame they split just as they were just capturing the worlds attention with their awsome music.i also agree with one of the writers above.tarjas songs cant be done without tarja.i am still sick about their parting ways, and i still want them to get the old nightwish back. and im waiting.

The direction of this band.... | Reviewer: Anonymous | 4/23/09

Now that Anette Olzen is in their band, is this a sign for the worst? Ever since Century Child, Nightwish has really changed from being an innovative, powerful metal band to being a standard, "sounds like everyone else" kind of band. The music has gotten worse and their sound is much more mainstream. Anette is used as probably a strategy to make themselves more marketable to the U.S. mainstream (aka Evanescence type of music). Gone are the amazing guitar melodies and keyboard work from earlier albums. What we got in it's place is huge orchestral sounds, which sounds good nonetheless, but it only makes the band play simpler stuff. Don't believe me? Listen to Stargazers off of Oceanborn and compare it to something like Amaranth off of Dark Passion Play. There is a HUGE difference in musicality! Also, their old singer Tarja gave this band something unique, a blend of classically trained opera vocals mixed in with metal music. With Anette, you get a mediocre singer who cannot perform her own songs live! I am sure Nightwish could have picked a better singer than her, especially with plenty of better singers in the world! To finish this rant, Nightwish should have paid attention to Metallica and what happened to them in the early 90's. Death Magentic is a nice comeback album, but it is too little too late to redeem any angry fans. They sold out and now it seems that Nightwish is heading in the same direction. They lost a lot of old fans and I don't blame them! They were very cruel to Tarja with that open letter. It seems that money is more important to them than anything! I am a Nightwish fan, but their recent actions made me lose respect for them...

Amazing band! | Reviewer: EJN | 3/12/09

I became a Nightwish fan only 5 months ago and they almost instantly became one of my favorite bands. Not right away though! The first song I heard was "Bye, Bye, Beautiful" and I was not that impressed with it at first. It had to grow on me! The moment Nightwish became one of my favorite's was when I got my copy of "Oceanborn". That album instantly changed my opinion of the group with Tarja's vocals mixed with amazing music. Tarja really sings great, and I wish she was still in this band, but I never got a chance to know the old Nightwish! Anyways, I am not saying Anette sucks, but she doesn't have the vocal style suitable for that group, after hearing that album as well as Wishmaster, Century Child, and Once. Angels Fall First wasn't that bad either. It isn't only the voice that is the problem though. The music is not as creative and as innovative as the older music. Although The Poet and the Pendulum is an amazing song! If you never heard of this band, HEAR IT! It will change your life! I recommend the older stuff, but the new isn't band either.

Also, someone on an earlier comment here someone said that Nightwish is the worst band ever and that he would rather listen to Britney Spears than Nightwish! ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR GODDAMN MIND! SHE HAS NO TALENT MUSICALLY AT ALL!!!! Almost everyone in this band was classically trained in some way and Tuomas Hopalainen is a legend and a genious songwriter! That's enough from me! This is an amazing band you cannot miss!
