The year 2006 began with good news for Nightwish: Their "Highest Hopes" Best-Of compilation had not only crossed the Finnish Double Platinum mark of 60,000 sold copies, it was also Finland's best-selling album of 2005, having sold more than 65,000 times. With the media frenzy finally slowing down, the band members found time to concentrate on the important things again. Tuomas had already written the majority of the new songs, Emppu recorded some new tunes with the Finnish hard rock band Brother Firetribe, Marco returned to the Tarot camp to record the eagerly awaited album "Crows Fly Black" and Jukka had his own business projects going on.

In March, Nightwish brought home two prizes from the Emma Gaala. The band was awarded an Emma as "Best Finnish Artist 2005" and one for "Most Sold Album 2005". In the same month, the band officially started to look for a new vocalist through an open call for auditions on their website. In April, the Finnish music video awards, the Muuvi, brought more happy news to Nightwish. The jury awarded the band a Silver Muuvi for their "Sleeping Sun" video, shot in 2005. The video also made it to the second place in the public voting. May finally brought two long-expected releases. The Nightwish book, written by Mape Ollila, was released in Finland. Shortly after, Nightwish's second full-length live DVD "End Of An Era" was released and reached gold status in Finland after just one day. It was later certified gold in Germany and France as well. In the following weeks, the band retreated to their summer camp to rehearse the new songs and have a good summer. Meanwhile, the media kept themselves busy with unending speculations about the new singer.

In September, Nightwish went to the studio to begin recording the next album.

The auditions for the position as new lead singer ended in mid-January. All in all, the band had received and listened to more than 2,000 demos from singers from all over the world. Exciting news that was followed by the announcement of the first new live shows, scheduled to happen in the USA and Canada in October and November.

On May 24th, all speculating and waiting was put to an end when Nightwish introduced their new lead singer, Anette Olzon. Within minutes, the news was all over websites and news stations around the world. One day later, the first single "Eva" was released as an internet-only single. The single's entire revenue was donated to a children's charity.

In June, the band went to Los Angeles to shoot two videos for their upcoming singles "Amaranth" and "Bye Bye Beautiful". Both were directed by the renown Finnish director Antti Jokinen, who had already worked with Nightwish for their "Nemo" video. "Amaranth" was released in August and sold gold in just two days in Finland. It made good charts positions all across Europe and went straight to the top of the single charts in Finland, Hungary and Spain.

The new album "Dark Passion Play" was released in late September and had a very successful start all across the world. It was awarded double platinum in Finland after just two days and received four more gold awards so far. The album entered the charts at the top position in several countries. The world tour is booked, first shows already sold out, the new era has begun...

Review about Nightwish

both are good but... | Reviewer: imtiaz | 11/12/2008

yes I have truly heard DARK PASSION PLAY, i m always a die hard fan for thrash and gothic. I m not speaking in favor of TARJA but what i m sure is NIGHTWISH needs a voice like her. Ask ANETTE to sing anything from ONCE and she is miserable but ask TARJA to sing anything from DARK PASSION PLAY she is equally better. And thats the difference.
Anette is good of course but not for this genre. Every vocalist has his/her genre and its not good anyway to put a great pop singer to sing an operatic song and vice-versa. can you imagine AXL ROSE from GNR replacing JAMES HETFIELD to sing FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS ?? ridiculous

I wish... | Reviewer: Sofi | 9/27/2008

I wish people would stop comparing Tarja and Anette. I'm a singer-in-training myself, and I think they both have great voices!

Yeah, Tarja's was better "technically," and I can't even hope to be able to sing like that, but despite her fantastic voice she was sacked for a reason. A band isn't a band if you don't get along, and the others weren't getting along with her.

Anette's voice is totally different, but that doesn't mean to say it's bad! I'm glad she's not an opera singer, because otherwise it would just make Nightwish look like total sellouts. Instead, they decided to take their music in a new direction, which they've done before anyway after Wishmaster.

I wish people would stop criticising Anette because she's different to Tarja. I mean, Tarja was the one who got the sack, and I don't see HER throwing a bitchfit because Anette's voice is slightly "poppier."

Also, it's unfair to say that Nightwish isn't Nightwish without Tarja. Yeah, she has a distinctive voice, but she wasn't the soul of the band. If there is a soul of the band, then it's Tuomas. He's the one writing the stuff, and he hasn't changed hugely. Yeah he's had to adjust a little to suit Anette's voice, but essentally it's still the same kind of thing.

Personally, I will be sticking with Nightwish through thick and thin. People who deserted them after Tarja left evidentally were fans of Tarja rather than Nightwish, so rather than go on and on about how much you hate Anette, why not go invest in Tarja's solo album?

i love both | Reviewer: kepalajamuran | 8/28/2008

i love Tarja coz She had this dark charisma surrounding Her. She had the voice that can make you fly deep to your darkest side.

i love Anette coz She had the voice of happy angel. Nightwish songs with her voice make your ears dancing in joyful metal.

i got the image in my mind that Tarja is like a black angel, while Anette is like a mid era female warrior.

love them!

Come on... | Reviewer: Anonymous | 8/29/2008

people, Tarja is a goddess, you can NEVER compare her with anette... I just heard two songs and I thought I was listening to some commercial, pop band... I miss the old Nightwish a LOT! I totally agree with Not the same | Reviewer: Anonymous | 6/26/2008
A band is just that: a band, and when someone is replaced (anyone, not just the singer), it's over... it will never be the same
by the way, love Tarja's new album

fuck off | Reviewer: Anonymous | 7/22/2008

you posers have no idea what nightwish was...it was amazeing and then you just jump on the band wagan with who ever the next singer is i bet if annette (or however you spell that bitch's name) got kicked out tonight you would all (and when i say all i really dont mean all just the people who are "pro annette") would be like "dur dur i so hated lyke lyke!! that annette girl im so glad that lyke britny spears is lyke tha new lyke singer of lyke nightywishes lyke omg) honestly you people make me sick and i hope you all get hit by a bus.

...and not just a regular sized bus i mean like a english double decker bus...

Not the same | Reviewer: Anonymous | 6/26/2008

I used to be a hardcore nightwish fan and to my opinion comparing Tarja to the new one is totally unfair. I have heard the new album. I have actually seen the video clip of Amarath and i was totally trhown off. I simply don't like the way that girl moves. I was used to a heavier, stronger and more deep presence from nightwish. Now i think i prefer Evanescence to them. In honest truth i stopped listening to them and listen only the old albums. The new sound just doesn't cover me anymore. It's a little too toyish and girlish. I secretely hoped that nightwish would continue only with Marco as a singer. THAT would have been a good change. Have you HEARD the man sing in Planet Hell? Honestly? Well, maybe it is just me or i am too metal to get the new Annette sound....i feel sorry, but not betrayed. It was their choice. So good luck to them. They lost some and they won some, that is how it goes i am afraid. I just don't want to listen to rubbish like an Annette Tarja duet. Give us a break people...

In with the new..... | Reviewer: Alienator_X | 3/30/2008

I think that some people are having a hard time swallowing Annette Olson's presence. Well, let's face it... i mean the past is past. Annette has a good voice which I'm more suited to. Tarja made the band a true legend, but i can't fathom some of the words she sings while Annette's voice is clear and has a nice presence. Honestly i prefer Annette.

both great | Reviewer: AW | 3/27/2008

First of all, Annette and Tarja should not be compared. Tarja is a soprano with all the rich overtones. Annette is a Mezzo-Soprano/Alto with deeper more prominent undertones. This in return would thereby make it difficult for each of them to sing music composed for each others voices. I like both of them. I think that they are very close matched.

Annette v Tarja | Reviewer: Bobbin | 2/28/2008

Loved Tarja. Always will love Tarja.
I believe Annette has ability, but I still prefer Tarja. I'll keep listening to both singers, though.

Maybe Tarja should come back? Then Annette and Tarja would do some EXCELLENT duets! Effin brilliant, wouldn't ya agree?

tarja and annette | Reviewer: Anonymous | 1/8/2008

I love both , but sometimes I was getting bored of the opera-sound , it was always the same , Tarja is a very good singer , but for me is annette a bit better , but they are both very good
