Review about Nightfall :P | Reviewer: Grim Reaper | 1/4/2008 also forgot to mention that feanor told the noldor that morgoth was of the same kind that valar were,therefor they couldnt b trusted"the enemy of mine,isnt he of ur kind?".And when he left Valinor,se said farewell...thats all :P Context for Nightfall | Reviewer: Squirrelloid | 7/23/2007 While i could tell you the song is most excellent, more important for it (and other songs on the Nightfall in Middle Earth album) is fitting them into the context of the Silmarillion. Fortunately, this one is rather easily placed. After Ungoliant had consumed and poisoned the trees and Morgoth had stolen away the Silmarils, the elves and the Valar came upon the destruction and were dismayed to see the trees dead. The song begins by recounting the lamenting for the dead trees. However, while Feanor was unwilling to surrender the Silmarils to the Valar, he did want to check on them to make sure they were still locked safely away, and so he went to his home, where he found his father the king slain (by Morgoth) and the silmarils missing. Hence the "old king was slain". Following this, Feanor and his sons swore powerful oaths that none but they or their descendants should own or possess a Silmaril (the oaths in verse 2). Feanor had been banished for carrying weapons previously (hence "banished king"), but he was rightful ruler of the Noldor, and his words to his people inflamed their hatred and many committed to going after Morgoth. The Valar attempted to dissuade them, telling the Noldor that they would not be able to defeat Morgoth. ("Vala he is... then your oath's been sworn in vain"). But Feanor was a powerful speaker and bound his people to his will, and they set off to leave.
