i adore Nick Cave. The haunting, complex quality of his music grips me. this song brings me to my knees repeatedly. I like the way he uses metaphors to imply things, like pressing his face to the glass. This phrase seems to suggest how we live in a world where people know that autrocities exist and yet so many people feel powerless to change things- it is like sitting at a window where the glass allows us to see these things but it (the glass) also separates us from their reality . Nick Cave is an artist who brings a lot to the table. He makes astute observations about the world as he sees it and delivers his message with intense emotional impact. The power of his delivery commands my attention and draws me into what he is saying- he is such a good storyteller that I cant help but listen.

This is the one of the most nasty, vile and disgusting songs I have ever heard. The only thing I enjoy is hearing Nick say MF over again. It's nice to hear a good old white boy say MF instead of having to hear it being said by some black dude in a rap/hip-hop video.

This song never fails to bring a tear to my eye.

However I'm pretty sure it was written to honor Michael Hutchence after he passed. I know that Nick sang it at the public memorial service, and I can't imagine someone like him pulling a song out of his repitoire (sp?) for something like that.

He is so in love with this girl. He doesn't believe in God, but on the chance he is wrong he prays to him begging him never to change his girl at all because, to him, not even God could make her more perfect. And if God must intervene let it be so that she ends up with him.

On top of that, he now must question the existence of angels. Because though he doesn't believe in them, her existence makes him question his own conclusions. He is calling her an angel.
