This song wasn't written to be the definitive 'New York' song. This is a beautiful, haunting, adn sweet song abotu coming back to your roots, your moral grounding after being loose in the world. It is a narrow interpretation to think this song is about New York-the song is about his state of mind. Billy Joel grew up in New York, that is where his 'real self' lies. The song is about going out into the world, losign yourself a bit and coming back to that place where you feel like yourself the most. People is who turns a song into an anthem or not. Unbelieveable a three minute song that repeats twice "China Town or Riverside" has become an anthem eventhough a few people thinks opposite.
