Neneh Cherry Lyrics

"Back then, much to my embarrassment, Don would play the
flute walking down the street, and I used to wish my
parents would be just like normal folks. Now, of course,
I'm eternally grateful for the experiences we had."

Neneh Cherry was born in Stockholm, Sweden in 1964. She
began travelling when she was 2 years old, accompanying her
parents on her stepfather (the celebrated jazz trumpeter
and global music pioneer, Don Cherry) on his tours. In
between travelling, Neneh spent most of her school years in
New York.

To all posting, English-speaking natives or otherwise, thanks for letting one more good-music lover understand this beautiful song. I kind of already had gotten a sense of the message behind the multi-language lyrics since the feeling is truly their, in both Yousou and Neneh's incredible voices, regardless of the wording. It's just as great to get to read from people all around the globe, as well! Listening to this song...this is what puts the "art" in the artist and, I agree, we need more of that these days... Cheers!

------ About the song 7 seconds performed by Neneh Cherry

I remember this song playing in the train in the suburb of Sao Paulo/Brazil. As many who wrote here I also could not understand the lyrics at the time. I discovered Youssou N'Dour from a senegalese friend when I lived in London I even have some CDs from Yossou but I didn't knew that this song was from him. Very surprise. I've just discovered Neneh Cherry, and I'm loving her song soo much too. Unfortunately in these days we don't see good music made by very good musicians going mainstream.

Seven seconds-Awesome song, a little sad | Reviewer: Midge
------ About the song 7 seconds performed by Neneh Cherry

Love this song.
It resonates deep within my soul & although I don't understand it all, the musical notes & words align me to a sense of the sadness thereof. I was born in & live in South Africa, I am white female, yet consider myself African. Many won't ever know the thousands of us, unsung heroes who fought vs. the anti-apartheid regime. Strangely it was the 20th anniversary of Nelson Mandela's release from prison on 11 Feb. Watching the celebration brought back so many memories. Sad that many say it was better under the old regime & they would prefered to be a prisoner (whether in jail or not), oppressed in 1's own country, in exchange for a job or health clinics. Starvation vs. imprisonment & loss of 1's freedom - what a choice. I do understand the job->starvation thing as I lost my job 2 years ago due to my boss's personal vendetta, & soon I will lose my home as a result of that.

I see the lyrics have been translated toward the end of the song, but can anyone translate the 1st verse too?

i loved this song from the very first time i heard it though i couldn't speak any english nor french then. After a while i came across with the translation that helped me to understend roughly the meaning. Now that i can speak some english and i understand how the whole thing works about lenguages i think that a translation isn't always enough. you also need an explanation of what some senteces might mean when the translation doesn't seem to make the right sence. Especially when we're talking about a piece of art and we also need to get what the artist is traying to communicate. don't you think? anyway, right now i'm listening to this song, drinking a nice glass of New Zealand wine and wondering if what i've just writen makes any sence. does it?

To the person before me, nicely done, your translation is way better and accurate than the one written in the lyrics. Congrats!

I love the song, I have for the longest time.
