Review about Neil Diamond songs
Being alone... | Reviewer: Jan
------ About the song I am ... I said performed by Neil Diamond

The song always meant to me, that even in marriage and motherhood, none of my family heard me...just like that chair. The husband couldn't have cared less about me or my feelings, and the kids were...well, just kids. I used to vacuum with the headphones and listen to this song...I always felt so alone in my marriage, which lasted only 20 years. Thanks Neil...I always had a song to relate to in my worst moments of feeling alone. Jan

------ About the song If You Know What I Mean performed by Neil Diamond

almost died in a car wreck in 1976. Survived and heard this song. So many experiences I've had and now I am a published writer of those experiences. Finally found the chords to the song and I am playing it at the library and I hope I don't cry.

------ About the song Brother Love's Travelling Salvation Show performed by Neil Diamond

The first time I heard this song was on the Sonny and Cher "LIVE in Las Vegas" album (triva - after the divorce Sonny filmed himself with young daughter Chas doing the spoken part for his solo tours) ...
This song was one of two Sonny Bono solo's in His and Cher's live stage shows in the 1970s. Sonny may have never been accused (during his singer/songwriter days) of having a great voice but Sonny was funny and charming and very very entertaining in front of a live audience. This song was always a BIG hit with live audiences.

To play up Sonny's strengths the spoken word part of this song was changed and personalized just for him (and stretched out longer). It took inspiration from the old time Traveling Medicine Shows (and not just the traveling preacher shows).

(Sonny always started off the song with these spoken words)...

Now gather 'round folks
I heard you say
You wanted a pick me up
That wouldn't let you down

You lookin' for a cure
It's got to be sure
It's got to be pure
Got to relieve your sore bones
Your aching toes and your runny nose

You know what you got to have?...
You got to have the one and only
"Sunshine Sonny's Elixir"

Buy some, try some
And you know what folks
You're gonna fly some

Now I say it's true
Now it's up to you
Whatcha gonna do
"Sunshine Sonny's Elixir"
I'm gonna fix you up quick, sir
"Sunshine Sonny the Elixir"

It ain't no where we can't fix, sir
Best relief and it tastes good too
You know what ...
The stuff is really really good for you

(And then he'd start singing HOT AUGUST NIGHT ...)

(and in the middle of the song replacing the spoken dialog Neil did originally)...

Now step right up
And don't be shy
You can tell by my face
I'm a nice guy

How much does this cost, this stuff?
Well lady what's in your purse
Is good enough

Haven't seen Neil do it live but I'm sure it's a highlight of his shows too.

This was probably the first song of Neil's I ever heard (because of my childhood love of watching the Sonny and Cher show on TV with my grandmother as a little kid). I love pretty much all of Neil's songs, although this the first one I ever heard will always have a soft spot for me.

My favorites songs of Neil's are often from his BANG records days ... with my favorite being SHILO (from 1967)...

Young child with dreams
Dream every dream on your own
When children play S
eems like you end up alone ...

Ahhh ...
as usual great lyrics and great music ...
Diamond knows how to make music!

If I didn't know better, I would have thought Neil wrote this song for my wife. | Reviewer: Wayne
------ About the song I am ... I said performed by Neil Diamond

My wife's name is Leland. She was born in Staten Is. NY on 1/24/45. Neils birthday. She lived with her family in NY until she married me in 1968 and moved to L A and raised our family. Every time I listen to this song it seems totally about her. I think that her being a girl makes it even more sensitive. She was lost between two shores for many years. We have been to many of Neils concerts and are life long fans.

------ About the song Brother Love's Travelling Salvation Show performed by Neil Diamond

My dad used this song to teach me two part harmony. He played a lot of Neil Diamond and felt he was the perfect musician. I know this man is amazing and this song will always be a reminder of my dad can't hear it or sing it without tears. Neil Diamond literally was part of me growing up.

------ About the song Brother Love's Travelling Salvation Show performed by Neil Diamond

there once was a time when music meant something, when words were clear and sweet and reminded you of what is good in life...and actually required talent to produce. Neil Diamond was an artist and a musician of unparallelled caliber...if you can listen to "Brooklyn Roads" without a tear trying to come up in your eye, you have no emotion.

------ About the song I am ... I said performed by Neil Diamond

I understand the analogy to Neil's own life, but for me the part in particular that resonates with me is "And no one heard at all
Not even the chair"

The inner heart-ache just touches me deeply. I've been in a situation like that and its not pleasant at all; The furniture represents the random people you come into contact with on a day to day, (e.g work colleague)whom are no help when you feel at your lowest, and if family members are emotionally distant it just emphasises the pain.

This song helped me to deal with my emotions properly. Sometimes I overthink and depress myself further. This song on the other hand is 100% Empathy. It reminds me that whatever issues I'm facing that it will all work out ok in the end (the old addage "If its not ok, its not the end") It reminds me that its ok to feel sad -Its a natural emotion.

I just want to thank Neil Diamond for writing this, its helped make some of the darkest days a whole lot better for me.

He talks about a frog who dreamed of being a King. This is his personal story of moving to LA to find fame and fortune and leaving the close knit ties behind where he was accepted for who he was. Didn't matter if he was "just Neil" back home - and he had immeasurable wealth in the love of his family, friends, etc.
This is what I took away here....such a great song...we moved here in June glad I go to stay with the grandparents every summer and still go to family home every year to see all the cousins aunts uncles - love them dearly. LA went to the dogs....

------ About the song I am ... I said performed by Neil Diamond

Whoever wrote the 08/08/12 review succintly hit it on the head. I felt exactly the same way for three years in California during the mid 70s. It was like Neil Diamond was singing the song for me.

------ About the song The Story Of My Life performed by Neil Diamond

I first made this song on a tape for our 38 anniversary; my wife was in the hospital them,
I find the tape after my wife passed away in December, almost to our 58th anniversary,
So it was destined to be the story of our life.
