Needle In The Hay Lyrics - Elliott Smith

Review The Song (25)

Your hand on his arm
Haystack charm around your neck
Strung out and thin
Calling some friend, trying to cash some check
He's acting dumb
That's what you've come to expect
Needle in the hay
Needle in the hay
Needle in the hay
Needle in the hay
He's wearing your clothes
head down to toes, a reaction to you
You say you know what he did
But you idiot kid, you don't have a clue
Sometimes they just get caught in the eye, you're pulling him through
Needle in the hay
Needle in the hay
Needle in the hay
Needle in the hay
Now on the bus
Nearly touching this dirty retreat
Falling out 6th and powell, a dead sweat in my teeth
Gonna walk walk walk
Four more blocks, plus the one in my brain
Down downstairs to the man, he's gonna make it all okay
I can't beat myself
I can't beat myself
And I don't want to talk
I'm taking the cure
So I can be quiet wherever I want
So leave me alone
You ought to be proud that I'm getting good marks
Needle in the hay
Needle in the hay
Needle in the hay
Needle in the hay

beautiful sadness | Reviewer: Monty | 5/18/13

I heard this song for the first time watching The Royal Tenenbaums. It's so perfect for the scene. I can't help but cry every time Luke Wilson says, "I'm going to kill myself tomorrow". Then soon after I found out that Smith died fairly soon after that time. In this world, the pain of feeling can crush one into a tiny ball, and you think that the only thing that can make it better is drug abuse. Our hell is of our own making on this Earth. The only thing that can save us from the abyss are the people we love and the good we can do for the short time we are here. I hope anyone who is contemplating suicide will think of those things and be realistic about how it will hurt those who care for you. Feeling depressed is natural, and to express it can be the best thing, to let it out. This song brings those feelings into the light. Thank you Elliott Smith for writing it.

So true. Reminds me so much of the best and worst of using. Also, the anger at those who try to get you to quit and how that just isn't possible because the bliss of nodding out is all you can think about.

This song is vicariously nostalgic and almost hauntingly identical to my worst years living as a junkie. After I heard it for the first time I played it over and over and it gave me a feeling of euphoria coupled with deep sadness, strikingly similar to the joy and pain of heroin addiction. Many will attest to the beauty and honesty and genius of this song, but true resonation will only lie with a few of us. RIP Elliott Smith.

One of the most dangerously honest but still evaded approach to the confessions of neurosis and depression I've heard in song. "four more blocks, plus the one in my brain".....,brilliant. When everything Elliot smith did, was a battle within himself, stemming from his over analytical brain and abused childhood. Indirectly powerful, veiled but detailed. Work of a pure genius.

You all should check out Bad Astronaut's cover of this song, it's pretty good. This song hits way too close to home for a lot of people, myself included. Oddly enough, hearing a song this sad is a real inspiration to stay alive; this song makes me feel a lot less alone.

Everytime I hear it I feel a little dopesick.. those were the worst days of my life.. and everytime I hear this song, I relive it all again from beginning to end.. When I hear him sing it, though, I feel like someone is left dead at the end...

We all go sooner or later. Think about Mozart. Who cares how he died, it was so long ago all we have left is his songs. And this track is a keeper along with White Lady Loves You More. But Needle in the hay is brilliant with the way the chords change on the chorus. He rotates between 3 chords but with 4 lines of "Needle in the hay''. It creates a cool double use of one chord at a smart time. The riff on the verse is also hauntingly timeless. And the third verse is such a poetic tribute to buying drugs. I listen to this song constantly and often repetitively. Hold it up and it shines.

I just got this with the Tenenbaums soundtrack (it was the reason I got it) and I just finished watching The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things and I really wanted to listen to this song so I put it on and I started to listen to the words and it felt really strong because it felt like it was coming from me and it was my story and I don't even know anymore.

Great song. | Reviewer: Justin | 7/21/09

I first heard this in The royal Tennenbaums, I really got into elliot smith after that. And by some chance, this song came on when I found out that my best friend killed himself. I cry everytime I hear it now.

For a long time i was into cutting myself and i can honestly say its better than heroin. The stigma that is comes with cutting is one of simpathy but on the other hand being so self conscious it brings way to much attention to your self. Any how heroin is a lot more disguisable and the feeling is about nine tenths that of cutting but neither is a good choice. The song brought me back and a really good reminder of just how far I've come and I'm still addicted to opiates ( opana, diluadid). Every time i listen to the song it makes me remember reality and dreams the two are pretty similar for me and i love it.The song is great.

It is oddly transgressive to listen to a dead boy's intimate suicidal rantings. It feels like I'm in a back alley in Bangkok watching somebody cut his own throat for my entertainment. Very like Townes Van Zandt's NOTHING. Nice place to visit if you're feeling too good about life.

i believe elliot smith wouldn't care about you and your problems, I would like to believe he left because around him all he could see was people so submersed in their own sadness that even if he had found his own happiness he would only be dragged down by the rest of us

This song is without a doubt the best song for any teenager contemplating suicide.
This song can relate to anyones relationship or drug problems and make you want to listen to it over and over again.
Personally, this is my song of choice when sitting up all night thinking about life and all of its ups and downs. I really wish elliott was still around to write amazing songs like this one. Maybe if he was still here he could shine some light on the kids who are all caught in the main stream scene

Elliot wrote a great tune here. I sorry that he took the big vacation. I've contemplated suicide several times in my short life and have always suckered out because of my kid and the trail of pain that would follow. With that said, I understand what Smith was going thru when he wrote this. Heroin was never my drug of choice only because I knew how WONDERFUL you could feel. Death would be a short-term certainty.
Sorry. About the song; Elliot has these lyrics that make heroin the protagonist and antagonist and at the same time WHILE still having this point-of-view that is looking from the outside in. Now, some of you might see this as ramblings of a junkie. Trust me, these are real feelings from someone who is a prisoner in their own skull. Do I feel sympathetic to this character? Naw, you can get help if you really want to. A great song? Yes.
