Narrow Daylight Lyrics - Diana Krall

Review The Song (7)

Narrow daylight entered my room
Shining hours were brief
Winter is over
Summer is near
Are we stronger than we believe?

I walked through halls of reputation
Among the infamous too
As the camera clings to the common thread
Beyond all vanity
Into a gaze to shoot you through

Is the kindness we count upon
Hidden in everyone?

I stepped out in a sunlit groove
Although deep down I wished it would rain
Washing away all the sadness and tears
That will never fall so heavily again

Is the kindness we count upon
Hidden in everyone

I stood there in the salt spray air
Felt the wind sweeping over my face
Ran up through the rocks to the old
wooden cross
It's a place where I can find some peace

Narrow daylight entered my room
Shining hours were brief
Winter is over
Summer is near
Are we stronger than we believe?

It's probably one of my favorite songs of hers too. I tend to believe it's about the death of loved ones. She's said that the album itself was about the death of her mother. She also apparently lost several other close friends in close proximity, prominent jazz musicians and mentors.

Narrow of my absolute favorites from Diana Krall. The song captivates my attention in the soft and beautiful words. Not only do the lyrics sound so well, the tone, her voice, wow...I can FEEL the song, and love it every time.

I first heard "Narrow Daylight" at the cottage while on holidays. The song to me is a masterpiece.
"Is the kindness we count upon,
Hidden in everyone?"
We visit Vancouver Island often and the song is so beautiful that I continue to play it often.

So soft! | Reviewer: Antonio Sitges-Serra | 7/3/07

It's monday morning, early June. Cold and loneliness are still close in her memory but moving softly away as light opens up the door of hope.

Emotional Moment | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/1/06

Diana sang it in Auckland, New Zealand, on ANZAC Day - the day when New Zealand and Australian people recall their war dead on the anniversary of the Gallipoli landings. She made specific mention of ANZAC Day before singing it and I think the hairs stood up on the backs of everyone's necks during the song. I have still not been able to decipher the precise meaning of these lyrics but it spoke so strongly on that day of coming to terms with grief and loss that it has remained a favourite for me in emotional times ever since.

Great song | Reviewer: Anonymous | 10/27/04

I love this song. It seems to me the impact of loss, trying to go on and get past the sorrow. Death, end of a relationship, I don't know, but it's very moving to me.
