Yeah yeah, aiyyo black it's time (word?)
(Word, it's time nigga?)
Yeah, it's time man (aight nigga, begin)
Yeah, straight out the fuckin dungeons of rap
Where fake niggaz don't make it back
I don't know how to start this shit, yo, now
Verse One: Nas
Rappers I monkey flip em with the funky rhythm I be kickin
Musician, inflictin composition
of pain I'm like Scarface sniffin cocaine
Holdin a M-16, see with the pen I'm extreme, now
Bulletholes left in my peepholes
I'm suited up in street clothes
Hand me a nine and I'll defeat foes
Y'all know my steelo with or without the airplay
I keep some E&J, sittin bent up in the stairway
Or either on the corner bettin grands with the celo champs
Laughin at baseheads, tryin to sell some broken amps
G-Packs get off quick, forever niggaz talk shit
Remeniscing about the last time the Task Force flipped
Niggaz be runnin through the block shootin
Time to start the revolution, catch a body head for hell
Once they caught us off guard, the Mac-10 was in the grass and
I ran like a cheetah with thoughts of an assassin
Picked the Mac up, told brothers, "Back up," the Mac spit
Lead was hittin niggaz one ran, I made him backflip
Heard a few chicks scream, my arm shook, couldn't look
Gave another squeeze heard it click yo, my shit is stuck
Tried to cock it, it wouldn't shoot now I'm in danger
Finally pulled it back and saw three bullets caught up in the chamber
So now I'm jetting to the building lobby
and it was full of children probably couldn't see as high as I be
(So whatchu sayin?) It's like the game ain't the same
Got youngin' niggaz pullin the triggers bringing fame to they name
and claim some corners, crews without guns are goners
In broad daylight, stickup kids, they run up on us
Fo'-fives and gauges, Macs in fact
Same niggaz'll catch a back to back, snatchin yo' cracks in black
Yo there's a snitch on the block gettin niggaz knocked
So hold your stash 'til the coke price drop
I know this crackhead, who said she gotta smoke nice rock
And if it's good she'll bring ya custom

Review about N.Y. State of Mind Amazing | Reviewer: Derek | 10/30/09
This shit is the REAL shit, along with Wu-Tang, old Mobb Deep, and Tribe Called Quest.
One BIG mistake though. On line 8 it's not "Y'all know my steelo". What an IDIOT. It's stylo, Italian for style. New Yorker rappers from Biggie Smalls to Raekwon use the word all the time. Sometimes it's easier to rhyme and other times it just looks cool.

I'm neither black nor white, I'm yellow. And I love Nas. This song is sick. People now are shoutin Lil Wayne's name, other fake ass rappers' names. Or in my hood, people jam on the Korean music which they even đon't know what the fuck these artists sing or rap. They just love these gay ass guys. While nobody heard the name Nas. Fuck'em all. While bitches go to sleep with the dream of fuckin with the gay ass G-Dragon, I go to sleep with something like a NY state of mind. Nas must be the best rapper alive.

Nas is the best rapper alive! Lil wayne is insulting rap by talkin nonsense and it bothers me that people jam to that. It just shows that times and music change Nas, Chino Xl, and The Game are 3 of the few rappers I can think of for keepin it real and showin us thatreal rap is still around. Hey 14 year old I got mad respect for you because you're young and smart for choosin Nas, Big daddy kane, and even Jedi Mind Tricks over bullSh*t like Lil Wayne and Drake and Sh*t like that. I saw Nas live last year and met him for around 5 seconds but Nas did a lot for me and got me threw my Grandmothers death when I listned to "Dance" which is about his mom's death. If I would have died after I met Nas I would have died happy. Respect to all of Nas fans!
Peace out Ya'll
Nas is the best rapper in the game today. He is than fucking lil wayne who thinks He is the best. He talks about random shit about getting money Nas' first album, illmatic is so lyrically complex no rapper alive can ever match. Its a shame all rap is today is a bunch of fake money rappers with lyrics so simple a 4 year old could have wrote them
Im fourteen years old and white and live in vermont. but im one of the few that crank nas, biggie, big daddy kane, jedi mind tricks, gangstarr, tupac , and wu tang clan. IN my town we either play country or shit like t.i/gay ass lil wayne
I'm white ,don't hate me LOL | Reviewer: Cartman | 2/24/09
I guess the time of good rap songs with a meaning and a story in it are over ,now it's about making money or a stupid-ass dance like soulja boy ,14 year old kids 'cranking dat soulja boy' -- WTF ? Ringtone-rappers my ass. Hiphop is about telling a story ,not about platinum chains or white sunglasses with your own name on them..Nas got skills and sick lyrics ,but he has to keep that up and don't become just another rapper for the money, cause that sucks..
The thing that makes Nas one of the best rappers is the way he is able to tell a story...me being a native newyorker understands what he means when he says "NY state of mind"...its just a certain element that comes with it, that kinda comsumes you. You can tell that he had to grow up fast like most of us...and that's why at age 20 most youngsters couldn't understand his intellectual level. I'm glad that there's someone out there who still understands what true hip hop is all about...that live in the park, chillin on your stoop music. That music that when you here it takes you back to certain moment in your life that once made you smile. As long as nas puts out albums...I'll keep coppin them...do ur thing boy!!!!..keep ya head up.. I luv ya>>>>

This Song is a classic, but still nas isn't the best rapper ever, he might gave a classic albums like Illmatic but his new album (untitled) > 2008
sucks. yeah it's all a ball of shit. everybody is
changing their music like a Evolution but we really love the classic ones.
Yo Nas is the dopest MC ever. That nigga is cool, can't no body in da game touch him. Look at his lyricial state of mind, and also he was only 20 years old when he did the joint!!! How many rappers can you say on that level?
cool i love this song | Reviewer: beast | 10/11/07
yea cool this song is pretty old but its still one of my favorites it actually has a freakin message unlike most rap songs today like that fakass retard solja boy
