"My Immortal" is a song by American rock band Evanescence. It was released on December 8, 2003 as the third single from their debut studio album Fallen. The song was entirely written by former guitarist Ben Moody, with the exception of the bridge, which was later added by Amy Lee, and it was produced by Dave Fortman. "My Immortal" was included on their EP releases Evanescence and Mystary and on the demo CD Origin. The version placed on Origin was later included on their first studio album Fallen. The single version of the song was called "band version" because of the additional band performing the bridge and final chorus of the song.

"My Immortal" is a piano rock ballad written in slow and free tempo with 80 beats per minute. Ben Moody was inspired to write it by a previous story that happened to him. Lyrically, it talks about "a spirit staying with you after its death and haunting you until you actually wish that the spirit were gone because it won't leave you alone."[3] Moody later revealed that the song was written for his grandfather Bill Holcomb. Critical reception towards the song were positive with critics complimenting its piano melody. The song became Evanescence's second highest charting single, peaking within the top ten of more than ten countries. It topped the charts in Canada, Greece and Billboard's Adult Pop Songs. The single was certified Gold status by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and Platinum by the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA).

An accompanying music video directed by David Mould was filmed entirely in black-and-white in Gothic Quarter, Barcelona on October 10, 2003. The video shows Lee sitting and singing on various location, but never touching the ground. Shots of Moody are also shown but he is never together with his band or Lee. The video was nominated in the category for Best Rock Video at the 2004 MTV Video Music Awards. In 2005 the band was nominated in the category for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals at the 47th Grammy Awards for "My Immortal". The song was performed by the band during their Fallen Tour and The Open Door Tour. It was also performed live during some of their television appearances and award ceremonies such as the Billboard Music Awards. (From Wikipedia)

my daughter was murdered at the age of 23 yrs..BY HER SCUMBAG BOYFRIEND at the time, she dumped him and he came back a week later and murdered her...i believe alot of songs we connect to when i hear them..i was leaving the cementry on xmas day just as i got into the car the song just started playing on the radio... i believe this is her message to me, the pain is so deep i cant ever get over loosing her..we were best friends..friday nites we would go out dancing together...she left me such beautiful memories of US...and our nites, she would always say THIS IS MY MUM...so i have now this special song in my heart for my Lara and me.. This song is exactly how I feel everyday. My ex the father of my two beautiful girls killed himself and a huge part of us. I used to always be the one who would stop him in his moments of weakness. I left him and he is dead because of me and now he is always here. He does have all of me. There is nothing good left in me. I try ny best everyday to not think. My girls have to hear such horrible things. Just the other day my daughter was told her dad went to hell. Normal reaction for normal people. Well lets see through the eyes of a twelve year old suicide survivor. Well lets say kids will kill themselves cause they don't want to never get to see them. It hurts and I don't know how to take it away. So please think before you talk. This is my song!!!

This song decribes the pain I feel when I think about my mother. Iw as always there for her, since I was 8 years old, always listened to her, held her hand when she cried, but when I started growing up and have problems, she was neve there for me. She always wanted me to be there for her, but never the other way around. It hurt so so much, because that's not what a mother is supposed to do, right? I wished she would just go away, instead of just lingering around me, never being there, but always reminding me of what wasn't there. This song brings out so much pain in me every time I hear it. It is beautiful.
