My Blue Heaven Lyrics - Taking Back Sunday

Review The Song (13)

Two sides twist and then collide
You're calling off the guards (Am I coming...)
I'm coming through (Am I coming...)
Adulteress conditioned to a spin cycled submission
"You know, sometimes it just feels better to give in"
(Sometimes it just feels better to give in)

And it's all too familiar
And it happens all the time
All the cards begin to stack up
Twisting heartache into fine, little pieces that avoid an awful crime
But it's you I can't deny

Dull heat rises from the sheets
I'm both a patient boy... well, and a jealous man
(Am I coming?)
But double standardized suspicion is remedied
Oh, My Blue Heaven
sponsored links
Sometimes it just feels better to give in
(Sometimes it just feels better to give in)

And it's all too familiar
And it happens all the time
All the cards begin to stack up
Twisting heartache into fine, little pieces that avoid an awful crime
But it's you I can't deny

We swing and we sway as this tiny voice in my head starts to sing
"You're safe child, you are safe"
(You're safe child, you are safe)
You're safe child, you are safe

We swing and we sway as this tiny voice in my head starts to sing
"You're safe child, you are safe"
you're safe child, you are...

SAFE!!
(Safe, safe)
You are, safe
We swing and we sway as this tiny voice in my head starts to sing
"You're safe child you are safe" (Am I coming...)
You're safe child you are safe (Am I... coming through?)
Is this all too familiar?
Does it happen all the time?
I'm just asking you to hear me
Could you please, just once, just hear me?
More than anything you wanted to be right
Still it's you, you,
It's you I can't deny,
(You I can't deny)
It's you I can't deny.

The interpretation of this one seems pretty obvious to me-- I blame no one having nailed it to the misspelling of one word: It's not "Adulteress", as in referring to a woman, but "adulterous" as in referring to the act of cheating.

Basically you have two people, "twisting and colliding" into each other in their torrid relationship. It's an out-of-control "spin cycle" because of the "adulterous condition" of it. ie. She's married or with someone else but cheating with him. They're having an affair.

"It's all to familiar" and "happens all the time" because cheating is the oldest sin in the book and is nothing new. But when you put it all together, when the "cards begin to stack up" it causes heartache.

Their relationship can never be what they wanted. And despite all the pieces "that avoid an awful crime" he can't deny her. They know its wrong but can't stay away from each other.

The "dull heat" rising from the sheets refers to him laying in bed alone after one of their trysts. He's a "patient boy" waiting for her to come back but "a jealous man" because he knows she's with her boyfriend/husband. Which is why its "double standardized"-- he IS the other man so has no excuse for being jealous, but is anyway. He knows its hypocritical.

The rest of the song is just more of him questioning and grappling with something that is so wrong but makes him feel so "safe" when he's with her.

This song is truly heart breaking and probably rings true to anyone who knows what its like to be in love with someone in an "adulterous condition"

Even though this song shows strong signs of a religious interpretation it also could talk about a girl, that the person loves. He turns to God for help and everything seems about her as he can't deny his feelings for her. The line "I'm both a patient boy... well, and a jealous man..." could be about his patients he has with the girl but he is jealous about a possible boyfriend or other guys. He can't tell her what he feels for her.

Interpretationnn | Reviewer: Morgan | 10/1/10

I agree that this song is about his relationship with God. However, I read it differently.
I think it's not only about HIS walk with God, but other people's who are at different stages.
The line "Sometimes, it just feels better to give in" refers to the act of giving in to sin. Sometimes, it just feels better to give in to temptation and take the easy pleasures.
Then the chorus is talking about the things he does daily, the little things, that stack up and distance him from God. And even though he can deny and lie to himself about what he's doing wrong (twisting into fine, little pieces that AVOID an awful crime), he can never deny God, His omnipotence, or the fact that He is the singer's constant. He never changes.
The bridge is about the safety, and affection that is found in the arms of God. And at the very end of the song, Adam is trying to reach OTHERS about his newfound understanding of the way God works, trying to relate to them through HIS experiences. "Is this all too familiar? Does this happen all the time? I'm just asking you to hear me. Could you please, just once, just hear me?" He's saying "If you have never heard a single word I've expressed in my songs, hear me now. Because I can't deny God, and neither can you.

I. Loooove. This. Song.

Can relate | Reviewer: Richard | 8/30/10

Eric, after reading what you posted, I find a deeper meaning in this song. I'm just getting home from the Army to a town where nothing ever changes. It's dreadful. As much as I don't want to leave my family again, I think it might be the only way to my happiness because I can't take the lack of change anymore. Thanks for posting your explanation. It changed my thoughts of this song for the better. It tells me I'm not the only one.

Meaning | Reviewer: Courtney | 4/2/10

This song is about a guy wanting someone he can't have because he is in another relationship ("Two sides twist and then collide"). "Adulteress conditioned to a spin cycled submission. You know sometimes it just feels better to give in." He wants to give in to those feelings which would be considered "an awful crime," and therefore, is causing him "heartache." He even hints that he might have stepped over the line ("dull heat rises off the sheets. I'm a patient boy...well, and a jealous man." He will wait for the right opportunity, and he also doesn't want anyone else to have her.

A good song | Reviewer: Eric | 1/31/10

In an appearance on Fuse TV, lead singer Adam Lazzara explained that this song is about his faith in God.

"Sometimes it just feels better to give in"
in this line, i think adam is trying to say that it feels better to just give up in life and hes telling that to God.

"And it's all too familiar
And it happens all the time
All the cards begin to stack up
Twisting heartache into fine, little pieces that avoid an awful crime
But it's you I can't deny"

in this one, i think hes trying to tell God that everything is the same for him that everyday nothing really changes? and hes saying its God's fault "But it's you I can't deny".

i think it's the one perosn you can depend on. or the one person that will never let you down. in adam's case God.

They were my favorite band for a long time. and I love them. this song is about a secret love affair apparently? But It reminds me of my boyfriend. He has a girlfriend.... I want to tell him how I feel and I cant.. and we've been on&off since 2007.. and it's him I can never deny..

Curious Lyric Correction | Reviewer: David B. | 8/12/07

In this part " But double standardized suspicion is remedied "

to me it sounds like he's saying "But double standard of suspicion is remedied".

but yet the lyrics with the CD are like those posted on here..so I guess it's just me not hearing that "ized" part on standardized.

HELL YES. | Reviewer: Anonymous | 7/1/07

I love this song so much. The smooth instrumentals are just awesome.
Also, how Adams voice just changes so magnificiently nearing the end of the song.
God. Awesome.
