Mother Lyrics
Performed by Pink FloydReview The Song (7)
Mother, do you think they'll drop the bomb?
Mother, do you think they'll like this song?
Mother, do you think they'll try to break my balls?
Ooh ah,
Mother, should I build the wall?
Mother, should I run for presidence?
Mother, should I trust the government?
Mother, will they put me in the firing line?
Ooh ah,
Is it just a waste of time
Hush now baby, baby, don't you cry.
Mamma's gonna make all of your nightmares come true,
Mamma's gonna put all of her fears into you,
Mamma's gonna keep you right here, under her wing.
She won't let you fly, but she might let you sing,
Mamma's gonna keep baby cosy and warm.
Oooh babe, Oooh babe, Oooh babe,
Of course Mamma's gonna help build the wall.
Mother, do you think she's good enough, for me?
Mother, do you think she's dangerous, to me?
Mother, will she tear your little boy apart?
Ooh ah,
Mother, will she break my heart?
Hush now baby, baby, don't you cry.
Mamma's going to check out all your girlfriends for you,
Mamma won't let anyone dirty get through,
Mamma's gonna wait up until you get in.
Mamma will always find out where you've been,
Mamma's gonna keep baby healthy and clean.
Oooh babe, Oooh babe, Oooh babe,
You'll always be baby to me.
Mother, did it need to be so high?

the difference between david and syd | Reviewer: Anonymous | 10/4/11
Syd was the original song writer/lead guitar, he's name wasn't "pink" it was Syd the kid.. yes its true He consumed a lot of LSD while he played, but he was still a genius. After a while Syd could no longer do both and yes he's mother put him in mental institute. David took over, and though both are musical geniuses, they both have different styles they play in. I love listening to David and Syd, both are amazing to listen to and put me in a trance. Shine on you crazy diamond is a tribute to Syd after he died. R.I.P. you crazy mother fucker

Roger Waters' father died in the Battle of Anzio in Italy, 1944. I very much doubt the Vietcong were waging war on the Brits during WWII
Roger Waters admitted that the Wall was 75% himself, 15% Syd Barrett and the rest based on other Rock Stars. So yes, Syd is involved but the over protective Mother idea is from Roger

For those that don't know, this entire album is about Syd Barret, the original Pink Floyd, and creator of the band.
By the way Mike is completely right, most of these other comments have nothing to do with the actual meaning of this song, though his father DID die in the Vietnam war, this song isn't about that at all.
It's about an over protective mother and a mama's boy(Syd, aka Pink)as he grows up his mother continues to shield him from the world, but the older he gets the world gets to him. Unable to handle the world alone, he builds 'The Wall' to slowly replace his mother. Everything bad that happened to him helped to build it over the first CD of 'The Wall' (Another brick in the wall part 1, 2, and 3 are about the continued construction of this wall)
'The Wall' is a mental barrier Syd/Pink put up around himself to help desensitize himself from the world. In the end, he becomes so detached from the world, he was not even able to cope enough to play in the band anymore. David Gilmour took over as 'Pink' after Syd... Left. In all irony, his mother committed him into an Insane Asylum just a few years later.
These are the TRUE events of Syd Barret's life that are portrayed in the Album and the Movie 'Pink Floyd's: The Wall'

actually tito, seeing as this was around the time of vietnm, everything you said was dead on exceot for that last line, A lot of people didn't think Vietnam was worth it, it was "just a waste of time" Otherwise id say spot on man. It's all about the Vietnam war though.

My english is bad, but i read better than i write. I can not believe how blind are the others reviewers. Obviously, the Mother here is not a real Mother, but he is talking about the system, the country, society, whatever you want, that protects us...it let us sing (free of expression), but doesn not let us fly (real freedom of being). When he ask about building the wall, it means actually "should I become a part of the system, another brick in the wall.."...come on...is so clear...
the rest of the song is related, for example, when he ask for a girl, well, moral and religion will choose the right girl for you...etc, etc, etc, with a little touch of pesimism in "Is it just a waste of time
The Wall Plotline - Mother | Reviewer: Mike | 7/20/09
The song narrates a conversation by Pink (voiced by Waters) and his mother (voiced by Gilmour). The listener learns of the overprotectiveness of Pink's mother, who is helping Pink build his wall to try protect him from the outside world, evidenced by the line "of course mother's gonna help build the wall," spoken by Pink's mother. She insists that Pink stays by her side even after he grows up, and cannot stand it when Pink eventually grows older and falls in love. But in the end Pink realizes the wall she built for protection has turned into an obstacle to be overcome.

Although it sounds like a "thank you ma" kind of song in the start, it quickly unveils itself to be about an overprotecting mother who ended up being, well, just another brick in the wall. Personally I feel like the whole feeling and theme of that album come through in the solo of this song, really beatiful stuff.
