Montsegur Lyrics - Iron Maiden

Review The Song (5)

I stand alone in this desolate space. In death they are truly alive.
Massacred innocence, evil took place. The angels were burning inside.

Centuries later I wonder why. What secret that they took to their grave.
Still burning heretics under our skies. Religion still burning inside.

At the gates and the walls of Montségur. Blood on the stones of the citadel.
At the gates and the walls of Montségur. Blood on the stones of the citadel.
At the gates and the walls of Montségur. Blood on the stones of the citadel.
At the gates and the walls of Montségur. Blood on the stones of the citadel.

As we kill them all so god will know his own. The innocents died for the pope on his throne.
Catholic greed and its paranoid zeal. Curse of the grail and the blood of the cross.

Templar believers with blood on their hands. Joined in the chorus to kill on command.
Burned at the stake for their soul's liberty. To stand with the Cathars to die and be free.

The book of old testament crippled and black. Satan his weapon is lust.
Living this evil damnation of flesh, back to the torture of life.
The perfect would willingly have died at the stake and all of their followers slain.
As for the knowledge of god they had claimed. Religion still burning inside.

The eye of the triangle smiling with sin. No passover feast for the curse of within.

Facing the sun as they went to their grave. Burn like a dog or you live like a slave.
Death is the price for your soul's liberty. To stand with the Cathars and to die and be free.

Remember; art and music is about telling a story. And the story is based on events that happened, historically, many centuries ago.

Therefore, it is rightly so to put it all into context, the way and approach of the merciless hoard that devastated the Cathars. To deny Arnauds' words in full connection with the last stand in Montsegur, is to admit ones own deflection.

For it was his approval that increased the torturers flame!

I have not been able to hear the lyrics, only asked endlessly to put the same information in again and again, there is something faulty with it. I would love to hear it and be able to call someone to buy it. Matta, full name Matthildur

Although the Papal Arnaud Amalric died prior to the seige at Montsegur which was the marking of the end of the Albigensian Crusade which Arnaud was very much involved and his principle was still quite alive WELL after his own death. So the premise of - Kill them all because the Lord will know those who are His... which is the origin of the saying Kill 'em all, let God sort 'em out. The premise of that mentality was very well alive and transcended Arnaud's live. So the lyric is still well within the context of history because the seige of the citadel of Montsegur was the end of the Cathar. It need not matter that Arnaud, the origin of the phrase was dead but the Catholic Church for whom he served and advised on how to deal with the Cathar's and his advice of kill em all and let god sort 'em out was still active. Just a mere 20 years did not change the way of thinking on how to resolved.

The lyrics is about the Albigensian Crusade and the conclusion battle at Montsegur. That is the premise of the song. To understand Montsegur is to understand the preceding context that lead to the battle at one of the last Cathar stronghold which later became what is known as the Chateau de Montsegur. Montsegur is the place of one of the last Cathar stronghold and the citadel in context is the fortification of the Cathars not the current structure that is built upon the ruins of the Cathar fortification.

It is still a beautifully done song.

Lovely historic reference.

Papal legate Arnaud Amalric allegedly spoke the words "Kill them all for God will know his own" at the battle of Beziers in 1209. He died long before the siege of Montsegur took place in 1244. Including that phrase in a song over three decades after it was allegedly spoken is historically inaccurate.

This song is awesome, not only because the rithm and armony, but also because it remembers a troubadour song, and of course the history that come with the name Montsegúr a epic battle between good and evil and it was real.

Good bless the Cathars.
Intransigence and tyranny has the few days.
