Missed The Boat Lyrics - Modest Mouse
Review The Song (15)
while we're on the subject, could we change the subject now?
i was knocking on your ear's door, but you were always out
looking towards the future, we were begging for the past
well we know we had the good things but those never seemed to last
oh please just last
everyone's unhappy, everyone's ashamed
well we all just got caught looking at somebody else's page
well nothing ever went quite exactly as we planned
our ideas held no water but we used them like a dam
oh and we carried it all so well
as if we got a new position
oh and i'll laugh all the way to hell
saying "yes this is a fine promotion"
oh and i'll laugh all the way to hell
of course everyone goes crazy over such and such and such
we made ourselves a pillar, we just used it as a crutch
we were certainly uncertain at least i'm pretty sure i am
well we didn't need the water, but we just built that good goddamn
oh and i know this of myself
i assume as much for other people
oh and i know this of myself
we've listened to more of life's end gong than the sound of life's sweet bells
was it ever worth it was there all that much to gain
well we knew we'd missed the boat and we'd already missed the plane
we didn't read the invite we just danced at our own wake
all our favorites were playing so we could shake shake shake shake shake
tiny curtains opened and we heard the tiny clap of little hands
a tiny man would tell a little joke and get a tiny laugh from all them folks
and drifting around on bubbles and thinking it was us that carried them
when we finally got it figured out that we had truly missed the boat
oh and we carried it off so well
as if we got a new position
oh and we own all the tools ourselves
without the skills to make a show with
oh what useless tools ourselves
i was knocking on your ear's door, but you were always out
looking towards the future, we were begging for the past
well we know we had the good things but those never seemed to last
oh please just last
everyone's unhappy, everyone's ashamed

Just like REM | Reviewer: Anonymous | 4/7/12
I remember a decade ago, people saying the same thing about REM. Happy Shiny People, and all that. But they endured and were a fun Rock and Roll band, and that's really what it's all about, right?
To like or not to like? Either way you have the right! | Reviewer: Anonymous | 4/11/11
I love modest mouse. This song is great and Float On and Fire It Up are two of my favorite songs ever. And I completely agree with Breelagh. People are allowed to have different opinions than others. Saying someone "deserves to die" because they have a different taste in anything than you is ridiculous and ignorant. It makes you sound like a close-minded extremist. When will we stop worrying about our differences and start embracing our similarities? So if you are not a close-minded extremist (and I hope that you are not)' then perhaps you should make better word choices. If you are a close-minded extremist, then grow up and get some help.

This song is amazing.
And to the other reviewers, I like all of MM's albums for various reasons but Good News was the biggest album of them all. I think it marked their sound or something, I don't know it jus had that feeling like "This is what it is all about."
Good News did rock, but you just can't beat... | Reviewer: meow | 11/14/10
The Lonesome Crowded West just has something about it that Good News and We Were Dead don't seem to have. And I'm not even saying that's a bad thing, since We Were Dead is my favorite album. Just that their first two albums were very rough sounding and I really like that quality. You can especially hear it in songs like Teeth Like God's Shoeshine and Cowboy Dan.

If you are a Modest Mouse fan, why don't you just appreciate all of their albums? You can of course have your own opinions about which album you think is best, but isn't the whole point of being their fan to be modest? When you tell someone that they're wrong for thinking one album is better than the other you are being ignorant. Telling someone "I want to beat you with a lock in a sock and stab you in the face with a rusty fork for saying that you deserve to die", what are you trying to gain? Have you acquired any knowledge from Modest Mouse's lyrics? My advice to you is to read their lyrics thoroughly and analyze them until you understand them. Apply them into your life and I promise you will live a good life that serves yourself and others.

"I hated the good news for people who love bad news cd, and being a big modest mouse, i was very disappointed in them, and then when they realese this single I was very excited for their new cd, and it didn't disappoint, this song is fantastic as is the rest of the cd"
Asshole. That album is better than Dark Side of the Moon.

Good News For People Who Love Bad News is amazing and genius like all of their albums. I want to beat you with a lock in a sock and stab you in the face with a rusty fork for saying that. you deserve to die .
Oh no you didn't. | Reviewer: Kungfutographer | 6/2/10

Oh. My. God. Good News for People Who Love Bad News WAS the pivital point for Modest Mouse (in my opinion). Albums like 'A Long Drive For Someone With Nothing to Think About' and 'Moon and Antarctica' had an absolutely completely different sound than Good News. To really appreciate their new album, you must love and understand all of their past albums, knowing that each of them are significant in the development of the all mighty Modest Mouse. Good News for People Who Love Bad News was brilliant. End of story.

i was just turned on to modest mouse resently by a college student at work. growing up in the sixties and seventies i am fond of all the great music that came out of it , but modest mouse has opened a door of delight once again, knowing there is a group out there with some inteligence brings back my faith in music once again. groups like the shinns, cake and a few other bands out there prove that there is life on mars
certainly uncertain at least i'm pretty sure i am | Reviewer: Jim | 10/27/09
Modest Mouse is by FAR the best band to come out of the 90s and since. I am an old punk from late 70's on and thought that good music died some time in the 80s. A life of arctic sounds is one of my favorites. Most people look at me funny about that, but hey! alright I might be goddamned.

modest mouse is by far my favorite band. this gentleman has it right. if you're a fan, then you don't just dismiss some album on the first listen. LISTEN. modest mouse's music is only second best to isaac brock's lyricism. the man is a genius. just listen to "talking shit about a pretty sunset." drunks. . .

your serious? ... float on? bukowski? blame it on the tetons? black cadillacs? satin in a coffin?? the good times are killing me? should i keep going? are you seriously saying that? if your a big modest mouse fan than the one thing that would have impressed you about we were dead before the ship even sank is the progression in thier sound, how much theyve evolved as a band without actually changing thier unique sound. if you want to look at it seriously, good news for people who love bad news is a GREAT album if you like modest mouse or even if your only half fond of them.
IE bukowski's lyrics, read, listen to them, and then read the poet. it'd make sense then, unless your just a halfwit. cause god who'd wanna be such an asshole.

This from an old guy...Cryptic and twisted, but there's self deprecation oozing through the cracks. Heard it for the first time on the way to work this morning, and half awake it sounded like Mick Jagger stepping outside the box, but upon further review I knew it was those "Float On" guys. I'm hooked...it's a keeper!

this song is swell. =] if you've never heard it, download it right now, or just go buy the CD, it's worth it.
