Minor Threat formed in November of 1980. They consisted of
four members: Ian MacKaye on vocals, Brian Baker on bass,
Lyle Preslar on guitar and Jeff Nelson on drums. On the
album "Out of Step", Steve Hansgen played bass and Brian
Baker played guitar. In September 1981, Minor Threat broke
up when Lyle decided to go to college.
During this time, Ian and Jeff started a new band called
Skewbald/Grand Union, who also kicked ass. This band broke
up when Minor Threat reformed in April 1982. Minor Threat
broke up for good in 1983. Minor Threat also changed the
world with the Straight Edge movement which has affected
thousands of kids all over the world. They are also the
band that got me into hardcore punk. More...
Review about Minor Threat So Much Influence, So Little Time | Reviewer: Des
------ About artist/band Minor Threat
Minor Threat was and always will be regarded as one of the most influential hardcore bands of all time. This, in my opinion, is rather astounding considering the short time they actually spent as a complete act.
Minor Threat released one album entitled "Out Of Step." This album was and still is listened to many, not all of them punk rockers. If someone asks me, for example, "Des, what is your favorite musical act?"
I respond, "Well, it's a tie between Bad Brains and Minor Threat."
If they are to ask about Bad Brains, I could go on for hours telling them solely about their albums and countless more on their influence on punk music, and music in general for that matter. Unfortunately, a conversation never tends to get that far. If someone was to ask about Minor Threat, it's not like I could say, "I love Minor Threat, I have every album!"
Well, I could, and to someone who is not educated on who Minor Threat is may be astounded that I have every album this band has released, thus making me sound like a super-fan.
So then, the question is: Despite their short time together, and their lack of albums, how and why is Minor Threat such an influential band?
The answer lies in their message. Contrary to the beliefs of most Minor Threat fans, hardcore is, or at least used to be, about unity of fellow man against the establishment. Minor Threat injected this message into most of their songs, sending it straight into the bloodstreams of everyone who would ever listen. After further inspection, Minor Threat also preached a message of tollerance, peace, and the most famous of all, the message of being drug free, alcohol free, and abstinent.
This message is known as the Straight-Edge movement. This movement began in the 1980s, but is still a strong-burning movement in people today. This movement was started by Minor Threat with songs like "Bottled Violence," a tirade on those who consume alcoholic beverages, "Straight Edge," pretty self-explanatory I think, and "Out Of Step With The World"
If one is too look past the catchy, angry, guitar, and the amazing lyrics of Mackaye, one will understand the message that surges through those lyrics. Those lyrics are the embodiment of what Minor Threat is, was, and always will be. An eternal rebel yell, a cry of resistance, a screech of defiance. When these three elements are mixed together, they form a roar, a roar of heavy influence.
