Millstone Lyrics
Performed by Brand NewReview The Song (25)
I used to be such a burning example,
I used to be so original.
I used to care, I was being cared for.
Made sure I showed it to those that I love.
I used to sleep without a single stir,
'Cause I was about my father's work.
Well take me out tonight,
This ship of fools I'm on will sink.
I'm my own stone around my neck,
{If you'd} be my breath, there's nothing I wouldn't give.
I used to pray like God was listening.
I used to make my parents proud.
I was the glue that kept my friends together,
Now they don't talk and we don't go out.
I used to know the name of every person I'd kissed.
Now I've made this bed and I can't fall asleep in it.
Well take me out tonight,
This ship of fools I'm on will sink.
I'm my own stone around my neck,
{If you'd} be my breath, there's nothing I wouldn't give.
Throw me that lifeline,
This ship of fools I'm on will sink.
I'm my own stone around my neck
{If you'd} be my breath, there's nothing I wouldn't give.
"They never hit their brakes..."
"There was no time to see..."
"He just ran out in the street..."
"Does anybody know his name?"
"I think I recognize him..."
"He sure as hell paid for that mistake..."
Woah.
So take me out tonight.
This ship of fools I'm on will sink.
I'm my own stone around my neck.
{If you'd} be my breath, there's nothing I wouldn't give.
Well save my life tonight.
This ship of fools I'm on will sink
I'm my own stone around my neck
{If you'd} be my breath, there's nothing I wouldn't give.

this song is about giving up on life through a spiral of depression. religion has no influence over this song at all and with his other songs, it only gets mentioned just like family, friends and other relations.

not that anyone cares but i think that this song is about being a lukewarm christian. in the bible, jesus talks about how he hates lukewarm christians and that in some context he talks about having a millstone tied around your neck and cast into the sea for living a lukewarm life. so i Lacey is writing about how his current or former lukewarm life was like a millstone

The title (millstone) is kind of a pun. A millstone is thought of as a burden. It's usually used by saying there's a millstone around your neck. In the song he says "I'm my own stone around my neck" meaning he is the burden that's bringing himself (and those around him) down.
And as a sidenote, I love how all these "die hard" fans spell Jesse Lacey with an 'i' [Jessie]. Ha
milestone? millstone?? | Reviewer: craig | 4/23/10
firstly "we all got wood and nails, and we sleep inside of this machine" these last couple of lines quite sums up everyones life regardless of religion.....We work for the system, and we live and sleep in houses provided by the system. point being, why is life is dictated for everyone. we have no choice but to live life that way or we would struggle. we are all persauded to do somethin in life that we dont agree with. will we be 'forgiven' ?? that last verse mearly points out that we just gotta bite our lips and grt on with it and we will see what happens......secondly....can someone please determine if its milestone or millstone....yesterday on my itunes it was milestone today after a reboot and reinstallation of itunes and all my music its millstone in tittle and lyrics :-/

When I first listened to the song, I thought it was saying "a milestone around my neck,' but when I got the lyrics from the official Brand New website (before it became under construction), I found out its really, "I'm my own stone around my neck."

Just wondering why the lyric phonetically says "a milestone" around my neck, when the lyric reads millstone? don't get me wrong i have loved this song ever since i heard it, but is that how americans spell milestone or is it just how you pronounce millstone, as millstone would make the most sense as to being a weight around his neck. Thanks.

Why do you guys have to fight about what a song means? Or even an album, or someone's beliefs? Can't you have your own opinions and respect others? There is a certain message each song has for Jessie, just as it does for you or me, they just might be different.

Hes not a christian. in his words he says he wants to "find himself before he finds anyone else (including god)" he used to be suicidal, and you would also think that if you went through some of the lyrics.. jessie doesnt give a fuck about religion so why dont you stop arguing about it
The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me | Reviewer: zachary Mckenna | 11/23/09
To say that this album has no religious ties is being completely ignorant. It's blatantly obvious. It really is an amazing portrayal of the troubles, doubts, and fears of following christ. Which in reality it isn't a religion at all. It's a faith. I think this is one of the most brave and real albums that I've ever listened to.
