Midnight Lullaby Lyrics - Tom Waits

Review The Song (1)

Sing a song of sixpence, pocket full of rye
Hush-a bye my baby, no need to be crying.
You can burn the midnight oil with me as long as you will
Stare out at the moon upon the windowsill, and dream...

Sing a song of sixpence, pocket full of rye
Hush-a bye my baby, no need to be crying.
There's dew drops on the window sill, gumdrops in your head
Slipping into dream land, you're nodding your head, so dream...

Dream of West Virginia, or of the British Isles
'Cause when you are dreaming, you see for miles and miles.
When you are much older, remember when we sat
At midnight on the windowsill, and had this little chat
And dream, come on and dream, come on and dream, and dream, and dream...

Absolute Perfection in the Genius of Tom Waits | Reviewer: Andre | 4/12/2006

I heard this song on the bootlegg called Tom Waits/ Spare Change...not that it is spare change, as opposed to the album Small Change. It's a live boot from Bremen Germany in April 1977. I don't have the personel list, but it's Frank, the brilliant sax player that was with Waits for quite a while during the seventies...and Frank was what most of us could only dream of in a horn player...totally musical, lyrical, and who's solo's never sounded like solo's but extensions of the music. Midnight Lullaby is so perfect it could change your life. Once again, Waits channels the ghost of Hoagy Carmicael, with great drama, pacing and beauty. Tom's voice is as thick as it gets, super bluesy, very Armstrong....but when you hear the change after the perfect sax solo, well, hang onto your heart.. cause when you are dreamin' you can see for miles.....and miles....(I've never been able to find out if Tom actually wrote this song or not, but that's because he had the chops to write it.) This whole period of Waits is simply all the food you'll ever need. Andre
