b. 2 December 1952, St. Louis, Missouri, USA. McDonald has one of the most effortless and powerful voices in modern soul/rock. For a period in the 80s he also became a major, although not always completely consistent, hit songwriter. He recorded an abortive solo session for Bell Records in the early 70s, but found greater fame as a guest vocalist with Steely Dan and as a member of the Doobie Brothers. McDonald was instrumental in steering the latter's sound towards highly commercial soul-based rock. Following his departure from the Doobie Brothers in 1982, McDonald embarked on a popular solo career. Anywho...I remember being 13 years old in 1986 and absolutely loving the movie "Running Scared" with Billy Crystal and the late great Gregory Hines. Truly one of the best buddy cop movies of all time. I remember just loving this song "Sweet Freedom". I never knew why. I just thought it was one of those songs that just makes you feel good. Recently, I had been having some of the toughest times of my life. Bills were piled up, the rent was late, the cable was disconnected, and the refrigerator was as empty as my gas tank. I understand the Law of Attraction and quantum physics. It seemed to not be working for me. I came home and my cable was disconnected but my internet was still up. (thanks for small miracles). I really felt I was at the end of my rope, despite my subliminal recordings, hypnosis, prayer, and whatever else I thought could help me manifest some good things in my life. I knew that it is important to actually "feel" good feelings in order to manifest the things one wants. So I go to youtube and listen to some of those old songs that made me feel so great as a kid. "kyrie" by Mr. Mister "Africa" by Toto and finally "Sweet Freedom" by Michael Mcdonald. My curiosity led me to google the lyrics to "kyrie" and I was blown away when I found out what it meant. I'll leave it up to you to look it up for yourself. I immediately began to feel better. Then I began listening to "sweet freedom" and was literally crying my eyes out when I read the lyrics and how they apply to my life today, some 22 years later! My life is now exactly what I'd dreamed it would be when I was a kid. Thank you so much for posting these lyrics.
