David Byrne definitely captures the spirit and essence of the Salsa rhythm in Make Believe Mambo. While his english lyrics to what is essentially a Latin American artform sounds a little mismatched and to an extent, out of place, he compensates for this with authentic spirit and instrumentational arrangement to make this piece a spicy, zesty, sonic experience. His music video was my first exposure to this song and I've enjoyed it everytime since. To my mind, Make Believe Mambo is a fine example of music's power to cross cultural and social barriers to eventually influence artists who will then take this artform, co-opt it as their own and add a new dimension to it. Musical evolution.
