David Bowie - Space Oddity
============================
Ground Control to Major Tom
Ground Control to Major Tom
Take your protein pills and put your helmet on
Ground Control to Major Tom
Commencing countdown, engines on
Check ignition and may God’s love be with you
Spoken:
Ten, Nine, Eight, Seven, Six, Five, Four, Three, Two, One, Lift-off
This is Ground Control to Major Tom
You’ve really made the grade
And the papers want to know whose shirts you wear
Now it’s time to leave the capsule if you dare
“This is Major Tom to Ground Control
I’m stepping through the door
And I’m floating in a most peculiar way
And the stars look very different today
For here
am I sitting in my tin can
Far above the world
Planet Earth is blue
And there’s nothing I can do
Though I’m past one hundred thousand miles
I’m feeling very still
And I think my spaceship knows which way to go
Tell my wife I love her very much (she knows!)
Ground Control to Major Tom
Your circuit’s dead, there’s something wrong
Can you hear me, Major Tom?
Can you hear me, Major Tom?
Can you hear me, Major Tom?
Can you hear....
“ am I floating round my tin can
Far above the Moon
Planet Earth is blue
And there’s nothing I can do.?

YES ASTRONAUTS CAN SEE THE STARS! OF COURSE! | Reviewer: R Ashton | 5/12/13
The 10-20-12 comment by Kevin wrongly said, "the reason why you never see hardly any stars in those moon photos is because the moon lacks ... an atmosphere. The reason that we can see ... stars from Earth as well as make out features of the moon with the naked eye is the fact that Earth's atmosphere acts like the lens of a telescope, therefore magnifying things. This does not happen on the Moon, so hardly any stars can be seen from the moon." X No, no, the stars in space can be seen by the astronauts in space as well as the 12 men who walked on the moon. But if its night and you walk into your front yard and have your photo taken, you cannot see stars in the background. It doesn't matter that we have an atmosphere! The camera exposes for the normal thing you photograph, the person close up who is lit, at night, by artificial lights. In order to get a picture of the stars you have to expose for that much dimmer and spread out subject. The astronauts can see the stars when they are in space just fine! Yes, the stars are more like unchanging pinpoints of light when you're viewing them from space, because our atmosphere makes them twinkle and seem slightly larger.
Song Inspiration? | Reviewer: Anonymous | 5/10/13
In 1967 (2 years BEFORE David Bowie's Major Tom song) Apollo 1's space capsule caught on fire before it could go up into space and 3 astronauts died in the fire. The song could be about that.
Or it could be about this one that happened the same year as the Apollo 1 fire:
April 23–24, Soyuz 1: Vladimir M. Komarov was killed when his craft crashed after its parachute lines, released at 23,000 ft for reentry, became snarled.
Moon Landing | Reviewer: Kevin | 10/20/12
It's amazing with the technology that we have that there are still people out there who still believe that the earth is flat and that we never went to the moon. The reason why you never see hardly any stars in those moon photos is because the moon lacks one very important thing...an atmosphere. The reason that we can see alll of those stars from earth as well as make out features of the moon with the naked eye is the fact that the earths atmosphere acts like the lens of a telescope, therefore magnifying things. This does not happen on the moon so hence hardly any stars can be seen from the moon. Keep in mind the distances those stars are from the moon. Secondly with the high powered telescopes we have on earth you can actually see the lower stage of all the lunar excursion modules as well as the foot prints and tracks left by the astronauts and the moon rovers. That is impossible to fake with a real time telescope.
If you still aren't convinced then please Google the Myth Busters TV show episode concerning the moon landing.
AS for this song it has always been one of my favorites. Not for the meaning of the song but for the music and lyrics.
A drug trip | Reviewer: Anonymous | 9/5/12
Its a first person account of a drug trip. Major Tom's a junkie... He's saying goodbye to planet earth before the drugs take over.... Then he's gone beyond human reach, and might as well be in space...
Moon landing never happened | Reviewer: nomoonlanding | 5/18/12
Maybe want to review stanley kubrick and the truth about the moonlanding.... never happened. Thus we never went back, thus no stars can be seen in the pictures, thus when confronted with these facts the so called astromauts became violent and got angry with weak denials..... internet is there for a reason.... research TRUTH!
rebuttal to "jay" | Reviewer: john l | 2/12/12
Jay, we landed in the moon in '69. Kennedy made the proclamation that by the end of the decade we would be on the moon. Kennedy was elected in '60. So unless he's a time traveler, you might want to brush up on your history.
Name of Song | Reviewer: Rock4Ever | 10/5/11
Please all note the song Title is Space Oddity NOT Major Tom.. he is simply the character the brilliant Bowie named and sang about. The song Major Tom by Peter Schilling was done later and in my opinion simply was playing (spinning) off of Bowie's song. That is not a disparage, as I like his song as well. I enjoy singing along with both when ever I hear them.
As to the feelings Space Oddity brings I think more a melancholy loneliness than sadness. I love all Bowie songs he has done and feel he definitively helped define music as it is today.

Just Felt Like Saying Hi | Reviewer: Kelly | 8/28/11
Well. I am 13 yrs old and this song was my favorite song when I was about 3-4. That and Fat Bottomed Girls by Queen. :)
And yes, we DID land on the moon in 1969, NOT 1959. Haven't you people ever seen Doctor Who? (kidding) (have you?)
By the way, I'm from a little country called New Zealand. Just wondering; have you ever head of New Zealand? Have you been there?
BTW: Dvid Bowie is amazing. My Uncle even named their kitten Bowie!!
Even though I love this song, it is the song that makes me feel the saddest. :(
Bowie is Brilliant | Reviewer: Anonymous | 7/17/11
The in Space Oddity; ...and the papers want to know what shirt you wear... seems to me to be about advertisers wanting celebs to wear their clothing. I can never get over the fact that Bowie was so young when he wrote and produced Space Oddity. I never tire of hearing him sing it. Stays with me. I'm seventy years old, as Bowie is now and I never get over his genius with this song.

I'm sorry, but your response to Mike M is totally incorrect!! We landed on the Moon in 1969, NOT 1959. Maybe you should have googled it before then you would know the facts first.
Major Tom is an awesome song by David Bowie, I'm trying to learn it for the guitar and enjoy listening to it very much. And yes I do agree that it is very sad at the end... But I still enjoy listening to it and will continue too... :-)
empty space | Reviewer: Dwayne | 8/2/10
Bowie has clearly stated in many interviews this song was written after he saw the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey which was released in 1968. The name is a play off of Space Odyssey. He did see the movie several times and was high on drug while seeing it and probably while writing the song but the song its self was based off of the movie and the enlightenment the movie gave him. Ashes to Shes reference to Major Tom being a junkie was probably Bowie's admitting he was a junkie when he wrote the original. "And the papers want to know whose shirts you wear" was a reference to British slang for which soccer/football team do you support? There have been at least two other songs written based on this song besides this song, Ashes to Ashes and Hallo Spaceboy also by Bowie. Peter Shilling's (1983) Major Tom(I'm Coming Home) was one, another was KIA's Mrs Major Tom. There have also been several remakes/covers of various names and alterations, including the sound alike version used in the car commercial.
This song seems so sad! :( | Reviewer: Tamara Jones | 6/19/10
David Bowie's version of Major Tom is so sad at the end when it says 'Though I’m past one hundred thousand miles
I’m feeling very still
And I think my spaceship knows which way to go
Tell my wife I love her very much (she knows!)
Ground Control to Major Tom
Your circuit’s dead, there’s something wrong
Can you hear me, Major Tom?
Can you hear me, Major Tom?
Can you hear me, Major Tom?
Can you hear....'
It's so sad because it says tell my wife I love her very much (she knows I do) because then the space shuttle ends up crashing by the sounds of it and it makes me very sad! :(
Do you agree?
lennon influenced??? | Reviewer: Kelly Roberts | 3/24/10
I remember reading, Years ago, that John Lennon had a hand in that song with David Bowie, it sounds like somthing John would write, and it almost sounds like him singing backround...anyone have any info???
Talk about mistakes... | Reviewer: Anonymous | 9/4/09
NO... we actually DID land on the moon in 1969 (July 20, 1969) and the word was "ANARCHIST" not "antichrist" which are VERY different in meaning. Do a little research before you attack someone's comment.
As for the song, I love both the David Bowie version (titled "Space Oddity" as mentioned below) and the Peter Shilling version. Shilling's German version is identical to his English version except that it's in German, so no huge bonus.

ok just to point out a few things wrong with your statement, one we went to to moon in 1959 and landed, the song was written in 1969, so thats a bit of a joke on yourself, also to call david bowie an antichrist, on make me believe that you dont understand a single song of his or even him in general, bowie was a great song writer and a christian at that, i really get tired of people throwing words like antichrist and god around so much that the idea of the words are obviously lost,
