Madeleine Peyroux [pronounced like the country Peru] was
born in Athens, Georgia, she grew up between Brooklyn,
Southern California and Paris, though it was in the City of
Light where she found her voice. As a teen she was drawn to
street music, and in 1989 she started to perform with a
group of buskers. She then joined the Lost Wandering Blues
& Jazz Band, becoming the only female in the group, which
toured around Europe for several years.
Madeleine burst onto the recording scene in 1996, with her
stunning debut album Dreamland. Madeleine was greeted with
a veritable torrent of gushing reviews. Most raved about
her smoke-and-whiskey vocals, often comparing her to the
late, great Billie Holiday. Others wondered how someone so
young could perform classic songs by Holiday, Bess More...

------ About artist/band Madeleine Peyroux
I unexpectedly heard Madeleine while shopping to add to my library---I knew I was hearing someone very special---I knew it was not Billy HOLIDAY---I was absolutely amazed to learn how very young she is with a vintage sound and great command with absolute delivery---I was fortunate so see her perform Berkeley Performance Center-Boston--June 28 2009--She can get very Bluesy --- because she has an excellent feel---the Band also was very impressive and supportive---no one got in the way! DICK LEWIS (BOSTON JAZZ SOCIETY)
As a vocalist myself and absolute Jazz enthusiast, I am inspired by her incredible talent, style and interpretation! Hard to have a favorite...all her material...OUTSTANDING!

A Very Rare Singer Sings A Very Rare Song | Reviewer: Chris Cobb
------ About the song Between the Bars performed by Madeleine Peyroux
Why is it so difficult to write about music? To write about how Madeline Peyroux sings? There's no substitute fo just hearing her voice, listening to it. So go and listen to it. Music reviews are just a form of self-expression. Reviewers are just lost souls.
For those of us who have gone to extrordinary lengths to hear the best Jazz music possible, there is nothing, really nothing that can compare to a brilliant vocalist. In many regards Jazz allows the sort of nuance and space to really feel what a singer is saying with each song. When I was a teenager I would travel to Yoshi's in Oakland to watch Betty Carter do her thing. Carter was one of the last great Jazz vocalists; one whose voice was an instrument in the band in the same way a saxaphone or piano was. Madeleine Peyroux, in her cover of "Between the Bars," adds nuance to each verse and builds the song into a rich emotional landscape one can get lost in. It is really just impossible to adequately write about her music. I don't think I can do it. It's too complicate. Really.
