Lucky Man Lyrics - The Verve

Review The Song (41)

Happiness
More or less
It's just a change in me
Something in my liberty
Oh, my, my
Happiness
Coming and going
I watch you look at me
Watch my fever grow and
I know - just where I am

But how many corners do I have to turn?
How many times do I have to learn
All the love I have is in my mind?

But I'm a lucky man
With fire in my hands

Happiness
Something in my own place
I'm stood here naked
Smiling, I feel no disgrace
With who I am

Happiness
Coming and going
I watch you look at me
Watch my fever grow and
I know - just who I am

But how many corners do I have to turn?
How many times do I have to learn
All the love I have is in my mind?

I hope you understand
I hope you understand

Gotta love that'll never die

Happiness
More or less
It's just a change in me
Something in my liberty
Happiness
Coming and going
I watch you look at me
Watch my fever grow and
I know
Oh, my, my
Oh, my, my
Oh, my, my
Oh, my, my

Gotta love that'll never die
Gotta love that'll never die
No, no
I'm a lucky man

It's just a change in me
Something in my liberty
It's just a change in me
Something in my liberty
It's just a change in me
Something in my liberty
Oh, my, my
Oh, my, my
It's just a change in me
Something in my liberty
Oh, my, my
Oh, my, my

Love this song. | Reviewer: Lisa | 5/31/13

This song is amazing, I still think their best song is bitter sweet symphony. Richard Ashcroft is an amazing song writer. The verve actually played their first gig in my local pub, the honeysuckle in wigan :)

Feverish depression | Reviewer: Anonymous | 7/8/12

'Lucky Man' is a plea to his wife Kate to understand that his depression, like a fever comes and goes; like a fever 'it's just a change in me' where his mind loses its freedom, it's liberty as it progressively grows depressive so becomes hostage to this sickness.

Everytime he turns out of his feverish depression he learns that it won't be permanent ,,, but this rational thinking can't be done whilst in the grip of a depressive bout as he loses is minds liberty to think rationally. So he asks himself 'how many corners do I have to turn' , from darkness to light, and 'how many times do I have to learn ' that it's irrational feeling bcoz he has ' the fire in my hand' ( Prometheus gift of fire to man - happiness ) which is a love that never dies.

But he let's her know that he's a lucky man bcoz her love for him is one that never dies despite his depression which is no fault of hers bcoz as he explains ' it's just a change in me '.

What a beautiful song | Reviewer: Anando | 7/23/11

I dont see how its difficult to interpret such a simple song.

"its a change in me , something in my liberty"

Happiness is something that you can feel without others bestowing it on you unrelated to external conditions and that is one's liberty.

Lovely lyrics however very difficult to follow , humans will remain humans and desire remains pertenant.

It's just a change in me | Reviewer: Anonymous | 6/28/11

nothing to do with a relationship, kids.

"Happiness
More or less
It's just a change in me"

it's all about outlook and how some people feel the need to rank themselves against others. it's internal. 'jealousy hurts.' that kind of stuff.

"Smiling, I feel no disgrace
With who I am"

see... crystal clear. no sappy i love my wife/girlfriend crap here. just self awareness.

'music is a mirror'... true, but whenever you ask someone for an interpretation what else would you expect?

i hope you understand

a person who is in love is happy. I am reminded of this when im in love with another. But how many times do i need to be reminded all the love i have is in my mind. love comes from the inside and is given. Love cannot be taken, only offered.

Simply this | Reviewer: Lilly | 8/9/10

He wrote the song for his wife. He's simply expressing his love for her and how fortunate he feels to have her in his life. It's not some deep hidden meaning. He's just in love and feels very lucky. Thus the title.

The Verve - Lucky Man | Reviewer: Gerard | 6/27/10

Iv read all the posts here. Great Song. Id love to have sat down with him when he wrote it....Im sure his perspective has chsnged since. I get the song....Its brilliantly expressed and witty....Altho a little painful too. Iv always enjoyed listening to it....

The love i have is on my mind... | Reviewer: Jeust | 4/28/10

Every music is like a mirror, and people see in it what they want to see. That's what beautiful about words but also there demise, since it's difficult to transmit an objective message.

To me this music symbolizes the fact that love is born in the mind. Attraction is born from the senses, but love is born from one's mind, from attraction.

And when we love ourselves in our minds it can last as long as the mind continues to exist, contrary to when we place it in something exterior to us.

And it also speaks of the impermanence of happiness - a change -, and the fact that we decide what makes us happy. The love of a fair maiden, the acceptance and love of oneself...

And he feels a lucky man with fire in his hands, because he feel that he discovered it for himself, and he discovered the love of self.

That's my interpretation. Where my mind's at.

the ability to decide to be happy | Reviewer: someone or maybe no one | 11/14/09

I agree with the person who said that it is about "...one's ability to decide to be happy.."
I think it's a higher level...
I mean this one would have power (control over the feelings)...so nothing external would be able to change the mood or something like that...

Something in my liberty | Reviewer: Alvaro | 10/22/09

I think that the admission that happiness is something in our liberty makes pretty obvious what the song is all about: To be happy is to be free.

The lucky man is the one who realizes it, he has fire in his hand, fire, the first thing we humans creat to separate us from animals, it stands for the power to create amazing things, like this song, the lucky man is the one who knows this, is potential, he knows who he is, he is absolutley free.

Lucky Man trying to get even more lucky | Reviewer: Hans | 8/29/09

I guess, everyone makes up his own version of the song. This is what I believe this song is about for me:

getting older, accepting and starting to enjoy the person you are...becoming a lucky man. Now, you see that girl you have always been waiting for...she looks perfect for you...you enjoy the person SHE is and u only hope that she too enjoys the person YOU are...because being and enjoying yourself as a person and having someone who you love and of who you know she enjoys and loves the person you are...well, thats perfect for me!

...just hoping to get to her, taking small steps/corners hoping not to risk the bigger thing (her not loving you). Surely worth the risk, always looking for more certainty...taking another corner hoping a straight street leading to your dream shows up

Deeper meaning | Reviewer: dany | 8/13/09

This is song is deeper than people think. It's mainly a release of the ego, and the ability to live the present moment. a glimpse in the middle of corners and twists and turns of life, which makes you recognize your own self! it's during this moments that we recognize, over and over again, that all the love we have is in our mind and what liberty truly means.

Peace and long live the great musicians of the 90's!

Validation? | Reviewer: John | 5/23/09

I think it's about a guy finding himself through a relationship. The writer talks about knowing who and where he is, and feeling no disgrace for being "naked." I think the guy feels like he's an imperfect man, but doesn't feel bad about them when he's with his object of affection because her love validates him.

Good Tune | Reviewer: fredsanford | 5/18/09

But the lyrics are crap. Probably just a bunch of words that went along with the melody. Song writers now-days are not in tune, nor do they have much depth when it comes to meaningful lyrics. A decent melody, a few catchy phrases and your pretty much able to entertain todays jello-brained youth. This song has no meaning at all, those that are reading into it, trying to make this puddle into some sort of ocean are simpletons. But still, this fluff song isnt that bad, it is what it is.
