Dan Fogelberg Longer Lyrics

Last updated: 08/31/2014 06:03:20 PM

Longer than there've been fishes in the ocean
Higher than any bird ever flew
Longer than there've been stars up in the heavens
I've been in love with you.

Stronger than any mountain cathedral
Truer than any tree ever grew
Deeper than any forest primeval
I am in love with you.

I'll bring fire in the winters
You'll send showers in the springs
We'll fly through the falls and summers
With love on our wings.

Through the years as the fire starts to mellow
Burning lines in the book of our lives
Though the binding cracks and the pages start to yellow
I'll be in love with you.
I'll be in love with you.

Longer than there've been fishes in the ocean
Higher than any bird ever flew
Longer than there've been stars up in the heavens
I've been in love with you
I am in love with you..

Longer was played at my husband's dedication | Reviewer: Bobbi Fields | 8/31/14

I played Dan's song Longer at my late husband, Mike's dedication ceremony for the monument. The song brilliantly played in the beautiful cemetery setting with majestic trees and a brook on the gravesite. Nothing less than the greatest love song of all time for my soul mate, Mike.

One of My Favorites | Reviewer: Anne B | 6/17/13

This song has such richness in lyrics and melody! It paints a beautiful portrait of a deep, abiding love. My husband and I had the pleasure of hearing Dan Fogelberg sing this in concert. It brought tears to my eyes that night (and still does) because I felt it could have been written for my husband and me, describing our love story. Unfortunately, Dan died at a relatively young age. So did my darling husband, who died of kidney cancer at the age of 48. Both gone way too soon. Rest in peace.

One Of the Greatest Love Songs ever written | Reviewer: kevin | 9/21/12

Longer in my opinion is one of the greatest love songs ever written.I'm 47 years old and I lost my mother to cancer in 1991.If she was alive today she and my dad wuold have been married for 44 years..they built a life together and growing up seeing them sticking together through thick and thin tellsme there is still true love .Hearing this song still brings tears to my eyes because it illistrates what true love really is.

The Greatest Love Song Ever Written | Reviewer: Ed S. | 2/19/12

In my humble opinion,"Longer" by Dan Fogelberg is the greatest love song ever written or performed. The lyrics are spellbinding. I had the pleasure of seeing Dan perform live on two occasions, but unfortunately, he did not sing this song either time. I'm guessing that since he probably wrote the song for his first wife, and she had divorced him prior to my being able to see either of those concerts, it might have been too painful for him to sing the song at those times.

Some years later, I had heard on the radio that the song "Amazed" by the group Lonestar had been voted the greatest love song of all time. I almost choked on my donut at that time. Really? Voted by who? Or whom? Seriously? A song that includes the lyrics "It just blows me away" is better than "Longer"? Not in any Universe with which I am familiar.

Having listened to "Longer" so many times for so many years back in the 1980's, it had a complete new meaning to me when I came upon it recently. Dan had the capacity to describe a love so strong...a love that I longed for (even though I was married unfortunately to a lying, cheating, abusive husband at the time). Never in my wildest dreams did I think that I could ever find a love that fit the description of this song. Well, I am happy to announce that after 27 years of a bad marriage, divorced for 7, I found the "Love of My Life" in my current husband, Peter. We have been married for three years and every song that Dan Fogelberg sings continues to compliment and accentuate every facet of the love we have. I was fortunate enough to attend three of his concerts back then, and the one that had the most profound affect on me was performed in a relatively small arena called the "Sunrise Musical Theater" just outside of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. The entire stage was empty except for a single chair and a microphone. I was expecting his entire band and was a bit disappointed, however when he walked out and sat down, he said, "Welcome to my living room everybody...it's just going to be you and me tonight." The crowd of a few thousand people went wild. We laughed, we cried, we sang our hearts out, and Dan loved every moment of it. He allowed us to feel as if we were a part of his intriguing, love and loss-filled life, and for that I will never forget him. Thank you, brother Dan (where ever you may be) for the gift of complicated and intricate musical productions , poignant lyrics, and the hope that no matter what, we may find love after all. You shall be forever missed, my friend.

One of the most moving songs of all time | Reviewer: Chris Bieber | 9/7/10

This is one of the most beautiful love songs of ALL TIME....

Recently my wife was taken home to be with the Lord. I was reminscing and remembered this..came here...and looked at the lyrics again.

I reread them in the/using past tense...I have cried for 10 minutes.

Thanks for the memories....

He and John Denver were 2 of my favorite singers. Now they make music with the angels. This song is so beautiful. It's not corny or silly (the lyrics would be with a different singer). Thank you, Dan.

Dan Fogelberg's Best | Reviewer: Steve Borrow | 3/22/08

Longer is probably Dan Fogelberg's best known and best loved song. It is an intimate declaration of love, reaching back and forward in time, as far as the human imagination can take it: a vow to keep the flame alight through the changing seasons. The beautiful bridge sure beats "to have and to hold as long as yea both shall live". Catch this:-

I'll bring fire in the winters
You'll send showers in the springs
We'll fly through the falls and summers
With love on our wings.

Yeah, free, like two birds gliding through time together without a care in the World.

Dan Fogelberg died of prostate cancer in 16 December last year. He shouldn't have, of course. He was 56 years of age, and many more beautiful songs like this one to write and perform. Tamam Shud after all.
