Little Wing Lyrics - Jimi Hendrix

Review The Song (13)

Well, she's walking through the clouds,
With a circus mind running wild,
Butterflies and zebras,
And Moonbeams and fairy tales.
That's all she ever thinks about.
Riding with the wind.

When I'm sad, she comes to me,
With a thousand smiles she gives to me free.
It's alright, she said it's alright
Take anything you want from me,
Anything

Native American Ancestry | Reviewer: Anonymous | 7/5/11

People often forget about Jimi Hendrix' Native American ancestry and how it factored into a lot of his music. He used many Native American images and motifs in his writing, so it's more than likely that "Little Wing" meant something entirely different to him.

Not a religious moral tale. | Reviewer: Anonymous | 5/21/11

Little wing is about the viewer having someone who is all to them, and who is living in a world of delight.

The reference at the end is to the unattainability in the viewer's mind, not a turning away from the temptation. Crikey the song was written by a 60's hedonist, not a religious ascetic.

Derivation of title | Reviewer: Anonymous | 3/24/11

In Jesus penultimate temptation in the wilderness, he is taken to a visible high place and tempted to throw himself down, with a sophistic interpretation of a scripture to justify it, as it was taught that God's angels would take care of him. Jesus refused and responded with a verse from Deuteronomy which states that you should not put God to the test.

The name of the high place to which he was taken for this challenge was "pterugion". There are various interpretations as to where exactly this may have been, but the term literally means "little wing".

Thus, by this title, and its use as a personal appellation, Hendrix identified the woman in the song with a temptation from which it is best to turn away so as not to presumptively test God.

"Fly on" is an instruction for her to depart, a rejection of the temptation, and a hope that she will persist in some semblance of innocence.

Little Wing Is My Favorite Song | Reviewer: Helen | 1/24/11

I just love the feel of this song, I can't explain it, and very few people have been able to pull off this song, if your looking for another version of this song I'd highly recommend Josh Charles'-- it's in his E.P. Trippin The Keys: Music Of Jimi Hendrix

My Story | Reviewer: Gina | 11/11/10

When I lost my granddaughter prematurely, I made a webpage and wrote poem, dedicated to her. I needed to find a song to put on the webpage, and I contacted my ex-husband, whom I was still friends with, and who was the 1st person I called when I found out Makayla died, and he sent me "Little Wing" via email immediately. It was perfect, and I could see her little wings gleaming in the clouds every time I opened that page.
Thank you Larry for your love, and for knowing just the right song, and just the right thing to always say to me when I am lost and hurting.
Makayla, Granny misses you.

I found my Little Wing | Reviewer: Doc | 4/3/10

Over forty years ago is when I first heard Hendrix play Little Wing. As a lonely young man I dreamed of finding my Little Wing. One day I met an amazing woman named Bird and I knew instantly my search was over. We got married in less than six months, that was over twenty five years ago and she is still my Little Wing.

Take anything you want from me, anything | Reviewer: Joe | 3/31/10

It's easy to put yourself into this picture that Hendrix painted with his guitar. It's melodic structure carries you away to a place that takes you "Through the clouds" and lets your circus mind run wild. It's a shame he had to die so early, and yet what he left us was a gift. Not many can use such brushstrokes with a guitar as Hendrix once did almost have a century ago.
