Light With A Sharpened Edge Lyrics - The Used

Review The Song (17)

Free from the torment of sin
All this I'm giving up much as
The sun would decide to give in
Explode into orange and
Hear all the voices sing praises with hymns
Mark the birth of a change
Free from the torment of sin
All this I'm giving up

It's not me
Bury wreckage my soul
It's not me
So who am I now?

Over and over again
Light with a sharpened edge
Cuts through the black empty space we call sky
Beginning the cycle that stays
And I know in my heart we all die

Like the day and the night
Like the sun in the sky
All this I'm giving up

It's not me
Bury wreckage my soul
It's not me
So who am I now?

It's not me
Bury wreckage my soul
It's not me
So who am I now?

Is there another side
Beyond the black and white?
A place I could meet you by
A place on the other side
I'll let you know when I go
I'll let you know when I go
When I'm gone

It's not me
Buried wreckage my soul
It's not me
So who am I now? (x3)

i dont know | Reviewer: bob | 6/5/11

i think it has something to do with leaving his religion

i'm not morman but i have heard christianity described as 'black and white'

in that you supposidly have only good and evil
and i think when he says

Is there another side
Beyond the black and white?
A place I could meet you by
A place on the other side
I'll let you know when I go

he is wondering if there is anything for him after he left his religion...because bert isnt realy a 'saint' but he isnt a realy bad guy either

i think this is about religion.....not his girlfriend...the song about her is sound effects and over dramatics...

Good Kind of Sad Song | Reviewer: Mike | 10/13/09

I know that Bert's Girlfriend died, but this doesn't have anything to do with that. Bert grew up in the Mormon Church, a church that bases all of their teachings and faith upon blessings in heaven if you keep the commandments on earth.

When Bert was a teenager he left this faith when he ran away from home. Because this is so important to Mormon families, and the Mormon Community, that when you leave thoughts and beliefs behind that you've been taught your whole life, you have to fill those voids with something else, some other belief.

I am an active member of the Mormon church, and I have seen this with friends and family members around me. Its a struggle and a change of identity.

When he says: "Free from the torment of sin
All this I'm giving up" I think that he isn't necessarily giving up his lifestyle, but the thought process that certain actions are sins. He is basically saying he isn't going to feel guilty anymore just because religion tells him to.

He says "its not me" Religion isn't Bert McCracken. He is not a religious person. And now that he has come to that conclusion he has to figure out "who am I now."

the song isn't just about his dead ex | Reviewer: Anonymous | 2/17/09

the people who caught on to the religious references are right. the song was supposed to be about how bert broke away from the mormon faith. at the same time, religion gives you some hope of seeing your loved ones again and knowing they're in a better place..so he's let go of his religion and now he's unsure because it's hard to have faith in an afterlife if you don't have faith in your religion anymore. does that make sense?

I'm seeing them LIVE for the first time next year :)! | Reviewer: Jess | 11/8/08

SO excited!
This is my FAVE song of thiers. i've been listening to them for over 2 years, and im hooked. atm, i actually listen to no-one else in my own time.

& Aaron, i don't know how long you've known them but what does it matter, really ? we all appreicate thier music on here whether we only came across them 5 years or 1 month ago. I don't like these bickerings.

i must admit though, i do really prefer the older songs by them, much more depth, which is what draws me to them.

Sorta Right | Reviewer: Anonymous | 10/8/08

Most of you guys are right in some way...It is referencing the death of his girlfriend but it is actually about his unborn child that died along with her. He is singing about how they died has changed him and he is giving up all of his drug abuse and he hopes he will see them when he dies.

"Like the day and the night
Like the sun in the sky
All this I'm giving up...
Is there another side
Beyond the black and white?
A place I could meet you by
A place on the other side
I'll let you know when I go
I'll let you know when I go
When I'm gone"
This song basicly sums up his whole situation and how he feels which is why i love it.

Hey Aaron, i totaly agree with u about their new album. I first heard about the used about 4 years ago when i was 10. It's most likly not as long as all you guys but still... i don't think that any1 esle i knew liked them and i tund out the be known as that kid with weird taste of music. Then a few years later they released "lies for liers". That pissed me off.. coz all a sudden all my m8's were all like "yeah i liked the used 1st" haha... fucking try hards.
But yeah.. i agree with Aaron agreeing with that annonymous dude.
Peace all

hmmm | Reviewer: Janet Helena | 8/15/08

I think the song is amazing. And yeah it is about his girlfriend's death. How's he supposed to feel when she died of an overdoes and he was feeding into her behavior. Its fucked up. He's too talented to have ever done anything like that.

I heard the Used had a whole cd done and when she died Bert re-wrote a whole new one. I can see why. The whole cd has meaning and not just to him but everyone makes up their own mind about it. I dig it. But it sure isn't nearly as amazing as their self-titled....

Light With A Deeper Meaning | Reviewer: Aaron | 7/11/08

I personally agree with the anonymous guy. I think that if Bert wasn't writing about her it wouldn't have seemed that way the very second I heard it. I mean...to me this song means so much else but to him it is his personal feelings, ya 'know? Well, either way. I love the new stuff but I'd have to say the old stuff is better. I'm pretty pissed off at all these kids saying, "OMGEE I LOVE THE USED," all due to the new album when fans like us have loved them since 'The Taste of Ink' or those who knew the guys beforehand.

Hmm.... | Reviewer: Anonymous | 4/6/08

theres alot of religious references in this song concerning heaven etc..
"free from the torment of sin",
"voices sing praises with hymns"
this probably meens that the song has something to do with the death of his girlfriend.

Bert also talks about how things in the world constantly change.. and nothing stays the same forever
"I know in my heart we all die
Like the day and the night
Like the sun in the sky"

I think bert is trying to express that it feels like hes lost his soul ...
"Its not me....so who am i now?"

...and that hes ready to just give up, and be with his girlfriend.

"Is there another side...
A place I could meet you by
A place on the other side"

I agree with the lyrics could just be writing on paper for another song, but its really how you take it as a person too... this song could mean nothing to one person but then a lot to another. I mean this song really does have meaning to me. and i was looking into this song and a lot of people at saying its because he left the church of latter day saints... it makes sense but then again until it comes out of one of their mouths, its all speculation.
