"Hey, it's my album! Who else can tell my story better than
me?" says Lauryn Hill, chanteuse, rapper, songwriter,
actress, activist and mother. She's talking about The
Miseducation of Lauryn Hill (RuffHouse/Columbia), her solo
debut album and one of the most hotly-anticipated records
of 1998.
Produced by Lauryn herself, The Miseducation of Lauryn
Hill is a deeply personal album, running the gamut from
affairs of the heart to socio-political issues, set against
a sonic backdrop displaying the remarkable talent of this
young native of South Orange, New Jersey. The title,
according to Hill, shouldn't be taken too literally. The
doe-eyed 23-year old, who completed her freshman year at
Columbia University, explains: "... the concept of

------ About the song Selah performed by Lauryn Hill
I believe it means exactly what she says it means in the song...prayer and meditation.
Selah defined: A word frequently found in the Book of Psalms, and also in Hab 3:9, Hab 3:13, about seventy-four times in all in Scripture. ...
In the Scripture...Selah is used to pause, have peace, and prayer...like a kind of reflection.
This song helped me out of a bad relationship...beauty at it's best. I love it when she says "cause me to agree with what I know is best for me" LOVE HER!!!

A love song for Jesus Christ | Reviewer: Anonymous
------ About the song Tell Him performed by Lauryn Hill
This song is def. about Jesus and not about a man. You can tell throughout the whole thing but esp. when she says "love is not boastful, love is not loud" and also "nothing compares to the love that was shown when our lives were spared." There's really no other way to read those two lines.
Throughout the song, in my interpretation and Catholic way of viewing the Trinity, she is asking God to tell Him she loves Him and needs HIm. As in, God, tell Jesus I love Him and need Him.
A deep soulful and love "about a man" song is "Nothing Even Matters." These are my two favourite songs ... ever.
Meaning of Selah | Reviewer: Zek
------ About the song Selah performed by Lauryn Hill
Guys, everything u said is beautiful and the song itself is beautiful too, but those meanings you guys gave to the word "Selah" are personal appreciations, not the actual meaning of the word.
Selah is the name of the Ethiopian Emperor that Rastafaris venerate as the last reencarnation of Jesus. The complete name is Selah Selassie I. That is why she mentions him and God. Basically because, for her, Selah IS GOD. Hope it helped.
Peace!

------ About the song Everything Is Everything performed by Lauryn Hill
This is real hip-hop, not the crap that is presented by 50 Cent and Lil Wayne, these guys don't make music, they make manufactured garbage that poisons young kids' minds, like "I'm a gangsta, I got Benjamins, I got cars, I got guns, I got bitches, yo, yo, yo, what's poppin?" I mean WTF is that?!?!?! Lauryn Hill is the real deal, she makes music with a positive message. I wish she'd release another album, it's been 11 years since The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.
Loving Yourself | Reviewer: Summer Britt
------ About the song Selah performed by Lauryn Hill
This song is about denial of who we are. That was one of Lauryn Hills biggest struggles while being constantly in the spotlight. Not being able to be herself and people constantly talking about the chicoes she made, as if she was supposed to be what the public wanted her to be. EVERYONE has the problem of percieving themselves in a way that they feel will be accepted by society. (Like the movie PENELOPE with Christina Ricci.)
LAURYN SAYS
-Nothing can be done against the truth
No matter how we remain in denial, yeah
-Coping with despair
Knowing you're not there
-Trapped in misery
Wrapped so miserably
In this deception that im wearing like a skin
-Dying to mantain
Oh I keep trying to explain
A heart that never loved me to begin
Oh I'm such a mess
I have no choice but to confess
That I've been desperately trying to belong
Lying to myself
And everybody else
Refusing to admit my right was wrong
-How beautiful is fruit still in denial of its roots?
AND THEN HE CAME
Which is enough said in that small sentence. Her life changed when she accepted God. She doesn't go into to detail of how it changed her because that is something that she wants to leave to the listener to wonder on, which is why she says SELAH.
Selah has a lot of meaning but the most accpeted meaning is that it was put with music to let everyone know that this is the moment where you should STOP and REFLECT on what was just said. She wants the listener to praise and meditate, and think about the words AND THEN HE CAME.
The song then repeats the same moods and story of denial of herself and how it dissapeared when he came.
If you like this song and the message, you will love her MTV unplugged, it goes way deeper.

for me this song speaks about acknowledgement of mistakes made and past experiences,on the song she speaks on a number of things, her choices and mistakes particularly, and selah suggests the pause as to acknowledge what has happened and prasing god for the lesson learnt.

------ About the song Doo Wop (That Thing) performed by Lauryn Hill
Non-biased, REAL, what's not to like? Spiritual enlightment is the only way to achieve geniune peace. Like Lauryn, I believe that the religion is less important than the relationship. I hope generations of young people can get something powerful out of these words.

this song has never rung so much meaning in my life as it does now. its scary the way people just do not wanna see you shine. its hard to believe and accept that its your own, you don't even have to look far, they sit and eat, drink, laugh with you.it hurts like hell, but what can you do?

------ About the song The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill performed by Lauryn Hill
Music today doesn't do that too often. Radio is trash and what's fed to you on the television isn't much better.
Thank goodness for the iPod (and other mp3 players).
But this song is great. I remember as a young teen, replaying this one a few times. My mother played this CD out back then.
Great times. I love all of Lauryn's runs in this song. They are very effective here, unlike some singers.
Lauryn Hill can oversing with the best of them. But she could also rap solidly. I'm actually looking forward to hearing her release another studio album but I won't hold my breath on that one. I will just hope for one.
My favorite lines in the song are from the intro:
My world it moves so fast today
The past it seems so far away,
*And life, squeezes so tight that I can't breathe
I love this song, it was one of my grandma's favorites, we would sit and sing this song toghter. Even when she got down and sick, and couldnt talk, i sung this to her. At her memorial this song was sung, and it just brings back so many good times i had with my grandma, and it brings joy, and happiness to me. It makes me cry but crys of joy and i sit and sing it and repeat "I love you grandma", I mess her so much.

------ About the song To Zion performed by Lauryn Hill
I cry everytime I hear this song.
When I was 20 my mother sat me down and asked for my forgiveness. It was hard to hear her speak about when she became pregnant with me, and how she refused to abort me despite her bad circumstances. I grew up poor, but I'm glad I was born, and I appreciate the tough life my mother has lived.
